Oh man. Just another example of the supreme hypocrisy of college basketball and BE bylaws.
A signed player can never go to another BE school.
A signed coach can.
Burn this rotten system all down.
To be fair I think the BE would frown on this and would probably make it clear that they are not big fans of this. Having said that I think it would be a moot point since I cannot believe Williams would leave Marquette for SMU. Just don't see it.
BTW-For the record if you believe various media reports SJU flirted with the idea of hiring Tim Welsh from Providence back in 2004 prior to hiring Norm Roberts.
And Dave Leitao, who was then the DePaul coach (well, they actually interviewed Leitao).
Also - Norm was supposedly offered the SMU job, accepted and then decided against it, only to get offered the St. John's job shortly after.
That's right, good point, but like SMU, DePaul was not part of the BE at that point. And I don't think it was announced yet that they were joining. Their first year was the 2005-6 season when they along with Louisville, South Florida, Marquette and Cincy joined from Conference USA.
I remember when SJU interviewed him they were very impressed but they got the impression that Leitao was not interested in coaching against his mentor Jim Calhoun. Of course DePaul would then join join the BE but at that point Leitao had taken the Virginia job anyway.
