BTW-Back to the coaching carousel. If the big jobs hold as is now the Illinois job BY FAR is the cream of the crop in terms of job openings this year.
Do you think they land a big name?
All depends on who you consider a big name. Was Bill Self a big name when he left Tulsa for Illinois? It is not the best job in the Big 10 but it is a very good one with big expectations. I think they can get a Shaka Smart.
I would definitely consider Smart among the biggest names of coaches who could be lured from their current job, so I'd be happy if I were an Illinois fan if that's who they get.
I like Shaka, but he scares me for a big-time job. Less than 3 years experience to judge. Yes, he got to a final four his 2nd season. But that was with 4 seniors in his top five. 2nd year, 4 seniors, you do the math. Yes, he has a terrific pedigree as an assistant. AN ASSISTANT. A school signing Shaka is basically committing to 5-7 years of whatever he can produce. As of yet, you don't know WHAT that is, espeically in terms of recruiting, dealing with star egos, etc. Do you really can a Bruce Weber, and then go with an unproven commodity? Shaka IS Bruce Weber 9 years ago.
As I said, I lke Shaka. But he scares me for a big-time job.
