CBI or other tournament?
« on: March 05, 2012, 10:32:10 AM »
we'd have to run the table to make the ncaa tournament.  the nit is out since we'd be below .500...

should the team go to a pay to play tournament as we did when norm was here...to give the team "post season experience"...or is it time to give it a rest???

These kids desperately need to rest their bodies, I doubt the staff wants to risk having them play more then they already have this year in a meaningless event.

I happen to agree with this.  These guys just made it through the most trying season of their entire careers most likely, time for rest and school.

Agreed.  Choz is right, the kids are dog tired.

Trust me they got oodles of experience logging the minutes they did this year including experience against big time teams on TV (Syracuse, Duke, Kentucky pre-season NIT etc.)  That is not an issue.

Plan is simple.  Start working hard over the spring and summer to get better, Lavin and co. do their part by bringing in re-inforcements and get ready to go to war in 12-13 and beyond.

They can rest in offseason. Guys like Phil Greene can use the work and improve

Exactly and the off season starts after the Big East Tourney.

Any other season I'd say go for it.  This season with Harkless hobbled and 6 guys. It's time to put up the balls and work on next season, unless the kids tell coach that they are adamant about it.   At season end, we can get healthy, Lavin can focus 100% on bringing in that excellent class and surrounding our fantastic core to lay the smack down starting next year and moving forward.

Lavin has been focused on recruiting. We need to focus on things like Pg play, boxing out, stopping for the short jumpsuit etc.

I don't care about your jumpsuit...  Recruiting fixes a lot of those things because we'll be able to play the way we want to, instead of playing not to foul etc...

Exactly.  Fatigue and lack of size and substitution rather then poor fundamentals are the issues and none of those issues are going to get solved by playing some 15-16 team from God know's where in a tourney know one gives a damn about.

My knee jerk reaction is to agree with the majority view on the board to let these kids rest following the BE tourney, but we're talking about 18 year old athletes with 24/7 access to professional trainers and medical staff that can better determine what these kids need.  I'm willing to bet that if we asked each player on the team, each one would say he wants to keep playing.   If the coaching staff feels that another tourney will do more good than harm, then I'm all for it.

What are the time constraints in the off season for how much the staff can work with the players or how often they can practice?
I'm guessing it's different for the remainder of this semester and in the early fall than it is over the summer when schools out right?

Unless a miracle happens and we win a couple games in the Big East Tournament I don't think we even sniff a CBI bid. They had a chance if they would have beaten Pitt and Rutgers or just one of them but dropping both those games really makes it seem less likely.

i'd say play only because it could be a chance to end the season on an up note...i.e. winning the tournament.

if the kids make a good run in the BET, then a CBI title wouldn't really matter.

Why is it meaningless? Where is that written? If anything, it's an undefined tournament. It's brand new. The NIT is smaller now. Some of the teams that would have played in it are in the CBI. Richmond put together a Sweet 16 run a year after playing in it a couple of years ago. For us, it's good practice and momentum builder.

I don't want to end on a 3 game losing streak.

I agree, unfortunately this discussion is meaningless, barring an improbable tourny run.

No one will remember or care that a severely undermanned team of first-year players ended the year on a three-game skid. Next season is a fresh start.

Whenever the season ends do you really think these kids will be hitting the books? They will be playing more basketball than they are now.
