Since the Bobcats have now contacted Stan van Gundy and Brian Shaw, can we all breathe a sigh of relief that Dunlap stays with us at least one more year(?)

Van Gundy says he's taking a year off.  I'd be really surprised if he wanted to walk into what's going to be a long-term rebuilding process after going through the last couple of years at Orlando.

I'd love for him to take Mark Jackson's old spot and do games with his brother and Mike Breen.    I bet they'd be pretty darn funny together.  Ya reckon?

Anybody who was actually worried that Mike Dunlap, no doubt a terrific coach, was actually going to be hired by Charlotte needs to stand up and give 5 realistic reasons why they actually thought that was possible.  Again there is no doubt in my mind that George Karl reached out to fellow UNC alum Michael Jordan and recommended he talk to Dunlap.  But no way was Jordan hiring a college assistant coming off a 13-19 season.  No way no how.  Again perhaps as an assistant but even that I am not worried that much.

Again NBA coaches usually come from one of 3 pools 1) Current or former NBA head coaches (Jerry Sloan is being seriously considered) 2) Current NBA assistants-Patrick Ewing was considered before he was told no and 3) Current elite NCAA coaches.  It is why Calipari is always rumored.

I think this post by Justin Burrell says it all on the respect our players have for Dunlap:

Well, one of the two finalists apparently is Quin Snyder.  A career assistant and a failed college head coach, who was canned from Missou in disgrace.  Stack the two coaches side by side - and I'd take Dunlap in a heartbeat.

I never said he personally was not qualified or more qualified then others I just said his current position (college assistant) represented the weakest position in terms of choosing an NBA coach.

Currently Quin is a NBA assistant as is Brian Shaw the other finalist.  As I said NBA coaches come from basically 3 categories: 1) Current or former NBA coaches (Jerry Sloan took himself out of the running, former long time Jazz coach) 2) Current NBA assistants-See Snyder and Shaw and 3) Current successful NCAA coaches-See Pitino and Calipari in previous times.

Thing is, everyone in the NBA (including Jordan) knows all Mike Dunlap had to do is nod his head, and he too would have been a "current NBA assistant".

SJU so very lucky to have Mike Dunlap around for at least another year as an assistant.  This is a guy who is qualified to be a head guy somewhere and sooner or later will get his shot at it.  Selfishly, I'm glad we have him and for a bit longer.

Big time loss for such a young team, but congrats to him.

Wow...  Great for him.  Tough to lose him at this point with the summer coming up.  Good luck to him.  I know Lavin will make the right hire though.

Any idea who might take his spot on the staff?

Does the whole offensive and defensive concept that we've recruited players for, and begun teaching these kids go out the window now?  Do we have to hire a coach that runs the same style?
