Marquette to Play Navy Ship Game?
« on: May 25, 2012, 09:04:09 AM »
If so I'm happy for a non football school to get the nod but I'd really love STJ to get that kind of exposure in the not so distant future.

1. Ohio State and Marquette are in negotiations to play on a naval ship in Charleston, S.C., on or around Veteran’s Day, according to multiple sources familiar with their scheduling. The game would be organized by Morale Entertainment, the same group that set up the USS Carl Vinson game on 11-11-11 between North Carolina and Michigan State. Ohio State’s other marquee games are at Duke in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, while also hosting Kansas in a return game. Marquette is in the Maui Invitational with North Carolina, Texas, Butler, Illinois, Mississippi State, USC and host Chaminade. The Golden Eagles are waiting to see who they will play in the SEC-Big East Challenge. But they have games against LSU in a return situation, host rival Wisconsin, and are at Green Bay in what overall should be the toughest nonconference slate under Buzz Williams.

I think it will happen, Lavin likes the exposure but we just have to win games to get some credibility.

It would be great if a ship can dock in the NY harbor and we get a game there.  Imagine that.

What about the Intrepid?

Of course NY in November you might need to put a temporary roof on the ship.

I was thinking of that but I haven't been there in years so I'm not familiar with exactly how big or how much room is up there.  I'm just guessing but these other ships are probably bigger and more modern.  Either way would be awesome opportunity.

I would think they would play on the indoor "hanger deck" on any carrier

You'd probably be right if they hadn't already proved you wrong with last year's game on the carrier in San Diego played out doors between Michigan St and UNC.

In NY though?   Don't see that as very feasible.
But a veterans day game on a carrier in or around NY would be very cool.

The more exposure we can get from games like that and pre-season tournaments the better we'll be in the long run.   Lavin knows St Johns has to be it's own brand, because the Big East's coattails aren't going to be what they used to be.

First, the original post didn't say any carrier in NY, it said any carrier period.  Was addressing that mistake.

Re in NY they want to play these games on active vessels as a show of support to the troops so I don't think the Intrepid will be in play, just as NY isn't likely in play because of the weather issues you already mentioned.  The TV value of playing in the hangar is minimal vs. playing on the open deck.

Agree with you, and that NY would also be out for the other reasons you mentioned.    And, I think I remember that they don't exactly play the game "in port".  The carrier last year was like 30 miles off the coast of San Diego I thought (could be wrong), but for security reasons they didn't stay docked.
Anybody know if my memory is right about that?

It was docked at Coronado base last year.
