If all goes right for STJ I dont see any reason why they cant hover around the top 6 spot in the league. Outside of Cuse and Louisville I dont think there are many teams that are that much better

Oh I expect nothing short of an NCAA bid and then depending on injuries and what not the 2013-14 team could be real special.

BTW-Eamonn Brennan keeps mentioning Raymon Austin with SHU.  That guy has been long forgotten.

Exactly.  Been saying this since the season ended.  That should be our timeline.

Expecting an NCAA bid is a lot to ask for a team adding 8 new players, virtually all freshmen or sophs, and losing a lottery pick.    I'm not saying it's unrealistic.   Just that we have our work cut out for us.

On the contrary though, no team in the country returns 4 sophs and one JC player as experienced as our crew.  We're a bunch of sophs that played all season last year.  Adding 8 new players to an experienced 5-player core is a bit different than what most people expect.  Aside from that we do return arguably the best SG in the Big East in D'Lo.  We add a big time PG transfer and maybe the best shotblocker coming out of HS which is significant.  We will need time to come together a bit, but I don't think we've been this deep and overall as talented in decades.  Over the course of this season, I expect our depth and athleticism to shine through down the stretch.  We will be a lot better as a team than last year due to that depth, length and additional skill at all spots.  If we had Harkless we would have certainly gone a few rounds into the tourney.  As it stands though, I think we'll crack the top 7 and be dancing.

Soft OOC schedule to build confidence.  Its very clear the staff is building for a crescendo like we had two years ago.  Come end of January we are clicking on all cylinders and hopefully we have better padded wins under our belt.

Judging by what we return, what we have coming in, depth, BE down year, etc. I dont think NCAA crazy goal.  Nobody is sitting here saying we are making the elite 8.

I agree, good points.   I didn't mean to imply it was a crazy prediction.
And for a lot of the reasons you pointed out (and MCN as well), making the NCAAs wouldn't be a stretch.   I just wouldn't predict it at this point.. if for no other reason than the lack of experience.    Truth is we don't know what Branch really is at this point, and don't know what Jakarr will be as a freshmen.   To me those are the two biggest "ifs".   If those two are as good as we think they can be, we're an NCAA team.   If they are disappointing, we're a bubble team.

And MCN, I agree the experience for the returners is far more than your typical sophomore.   So they should be ahead of the curve.   But in some respects they lack 'meaningful' experience.   Dom, Amir etc have tons of playing time, but have they played in close games down the stretch ?   Games like that on the road?  Tight Big East games on Thurs or Fri of the tournament?   Maybe they have a taste of that pressure, but not really.
Another way to look at is a guy like Otto Porter who got slightly less playing time, was in close games on the road at Syracuse, at Louisville etc etc.   Other than against Cincinnati, we weren't even competitive in our road games.

I'll stop there.  I don't want to defend my position too much, because I sound like a negative-nelly.    I think the team is going to be good and I'm beyond excited.
I'll just stick by my initial post; NCAAs aren't a crazy prediction, but we have our work cut out for us.

If, as you say, we'll be seeing the Big East have a "down year," then finishing seventh in the conference (which would be a nice achievement by such a young team as ours) probably won't be good enough to get us to the Dance. I think we've gotten spoiled with the number of BE teams being invited to the NCAAs over the past few years; seven bids is definitely the exception, not the norm. So if your BE assessment is accurate -- and I think it is -- it's more likely that, barring the unexpected, the BE will get no more than six bids this season.

I think we get more than 6 bids for sure.  Big East is not as "down" as you think.  Lots of programs will be better than last year as well.

Yeah most teams in the Big East don't rebuild, they reload. I'm thinking 8-9 teams

7 is a safe number I've thrown out.  I've also been adamant that after 2 its a toss up IMO for those next 5 spots.  All depends if the top 7 are lights out and 5 are ranked with the other two receiving votes than it doesn't matter what the bottom teams are doing.

By down year in the BE I think its less top heavy than years past, if thats a better clarification.

Would be surprised, not shocked. That said, I do see this team peaking, like that team, down the stretch.

Hey Nelly, you seem on point to me.  I'm more concerned about Branch than Sampson mainly because I haven't really seen him and because the backup PG situation is a little muddled.  After the Lindsey debacle I'm reluctant to count too many chickens right now.  Sampson though I've seen and appears to be more of a sure thing.  He's not Harkless but his natural aggression has to be a plus.  We also have promising backups for the front court.  I look at the roster and don't see many question marks at all other than how good can these kids be?
All in all it's a nice way to go into the season instead of biting fingernails like usual.  I keep waiting for something bad to happen but so far so good..........

It is more talented.

I agree with Rothstein, GASP,  from a few weeks ago when he said this is the most talent at SJU since the Fran built Jarvis teams of 98-99/99-00.

But they are awfully young.

I just dont think many fans that year recognized the 2011 team finished tied for 3rd.  With the tiebreakers we got killed and dropped to 6 I think it was.
