Now I regret that the Big East invited Temple and Memphis. If they stayed put, we could have lured both after the split, and had them play MAC football.

I think it's a moot point, football schools still run the show and the BBall only schools still want to be involved with Uconn, Louisville and Cinci of the world.  THe bball schools were ok with adding Memphis and Temple along with sub par programs that would water down the bball conference to cater to the football schools and stay together.  THey dont want a bball only conference as long as the 6-7 solid football schools stick around.

The table has been set when they offered those new football schools.  Nothing is going to happen until there is further expansion and unless the Big 12 goes after Louisville as a 11th or 12th team i dont see it happening in the near future.

The good news is that no matter what, STJ will have solid bball partners with many of the schools listed in this thread.

Football schools run the show until there are none left.  Or when the schools left are South Florida and Memphis.  Basketball schools won't run around following them.  UCONN, Rutgers and Lville have to be running around now looking for next move.  Here comes Rd 2, Rd 3 or whatever round of musical chairs this is.

OF course they have and they should.  BUt what moves does Louisville, Uconn, Cinci, and Rutgers have to go? This was the best option for football and BBAll schools accepted it.  That's what happened, they did follow them.  WOrry abt the bball only when they end up leaving, i wouldnt want to dump schools with Pitino and Calhoun.  The bball option is easy and will always be there.

While the west coast idea sounds good, there just aint enough bigtime bball-only schools out there.

Midwest is where y'all gotta look:
Xavier
St. Louis
Dayton
Butler
Parking only for NYCHA permit holders.

No Memphis?

Problem wit Memphis is they got D1 fball. Though it suck, they still got it. Dont want to relive what we been going through as a hybrid conference.
Same wit UNLV.

Keep it bball-only, unless they willing to go to 1-AA or whatever.

Nah, but for us to loose all this so quick is devastating. Closer to a mid major then to a Power conference.

You really would consider 10 teams with history, fan bases and media markets like STJ, Gtown, Nova, Prov, Hall, Marq, Dep, Butler, Xavier mid major tho?  Thats still 4 bid conference IMO.  Could go 5-6 bids at 12 teams.

The initial mid major reference was an exaggeration. Sarcasm that's it's not the end of the world although a bit stunning to have that many teams exit in such a short span. And I was referring to the A-10 if we were to take temple and all the other teams mentioned they would Be closer to mid major than power material

I'll take St. Mary's any day. But as for Gonzaga, stay the hell out! Hate that team! :tickedoff:

Xavier for sure, but schools like St. Mary's are mid major material.  I'll take a more powerful Big East/A-10 hybrid if that is what it comes down to.  It would be a really good conference and give SJU an even better thance to remain on top than the most recent versions of the Big East.  I don't think all of this is shaping out horribly at all.  I think in the end, SJU will still be in a very fine league if it has good schools like Uconn, nova, georgetown, SJU, Xavier, rutgers, seton hall, providence, Marquette, Temple, Memphis etc.  That is far from a mid-major league.

Although many here(including me) consider it unlikely....... it would not totally shock me if the ACC decided to put a definate end to any potential future challenge by the BE to their basketball supremacy by going after St. Johns, Nova and G-Town.

The BE additions of schools like Temple and Memphis, and potentially Xavier, along with the near future retirement of Boeheim and eventual departure of J Dixon could see BE b-ball as the best any given season.

They could stamp out that threat for good by going after the three tradition rich, big market b-ball only schools who would anchor any future BE conf.

Its an unlikely scenario, but one  that would not completely surprise me if it unfolded.

All I care about is our bid. If our conference schedule isn't as challenging as it has been, then we add, Illinois, Arizona, Florida and Maryland/Duke to a home and away, and we're golden. If you play a ranked Gtown, Nova, Marq and Xavier twice that's 8 games. Not mention Temple-who is always good. It's enough.

Playing BE teams once a year was an awful idea. You kill rivalries that way.

I totally agree with this.
A basketball only conference with the teams being mentioned wouldn't be a "power" conference, but it surely isn't midmajor either.
I'd be happy with a smaller, more closely tied, conference.
And like Poison says, we can always have a challenging out of conference schedule if need be.   Basketball will always be played in NYC.  SJU as a program isn't going to disappear.
The problem has always been that SJU shares nothing in common with Virginia Tech, just like now it has nothing in common with an SMU or UCF.   The division of interests with football schools drove the conference apart, people need to recognize that and fix it once and for all.

I'd rather play Nova and Seton Hall twice a year than play some of the teams we're adding to the BE.   Smaller isn't necessarily weaker.
