I was about to complain like I did last year about how SJU waited for several weeks into the new school year before updating the site for a new roster before I noticed this yesterday.  Up until yesterday they still had Dunlap and last year's roster.

But it is also a sign all of the incoming new players have cleared if you had any doubt.

Nice to see roster early on the school's website.
Start of season getting closer !

Cant wait to be able to rotate 4-5 quality bigs through the PF-Ctr
Boy we were thin last year

We were out rebounded by 6 boards /game in BE play last year.
Dont think we have that problem this year.

Branch is listed on the roster as a freshman
I thought he would be a soph this year because he played a half year at A & M
Can anyone clarify what his status should be?
Thanks!!

Just semantics, but isn't he still a frosh until start of 2nd sememester (which is when he also becomes eligible)?

I think he's a sof given that he attend school all last year plus summer school.  He hasn't missed any school time.

I meant athletically - like Hooper is an academic soph as soon as school starts, but not an athletic  soph until his eligibility starts for the 2014 season - he's not an athletic soph while still sitting out his transfer transfer time - he's a redshirt freshman...Again, just semantics.

i'm assuming that he would have three and one half years of eligibility remaining.  if he played the entire year last year, and then transfered, he would have three years left.  so it doesn't make sense that he would have only two and one half years eligibility if he left after just playing half a year.

I originally thought the same
However, I believe that, by playing half of his freshman season, he burned that year
So, instead of three and a half years of eligibility, I believe that he has two and a half years left
If that's the case, he should have stayed at A & M for his entire freshman year
He would then have had 3 full seasons to play at his next school

Once you transfer you must normally sit out a year.
So he could have played 1 year @ A&M and 2 @ St Johns or
1/2 @ A&M & 2.5 @ St Johns.  (glad he chose the 2nd)

Either way he plays 3 years. He & Max are both sophomores.
They must both sit 2 semesters (?)
They both will finish eligibility in May 2015 with Greene, Pointer etc

If Branch played the whole year and then came to STJ he would get 3 full years to to play not the 2 or 2.5 you mentioned.

Max will not finish the same time as Branch.  You get 5 years to play 4 years.  Max is in his 2nd year but his soph 'season' won't start until Fall of 13.

In my opinion they need to make changes to the transfer rules to give a kid the chance to earn the year of eligibility back, such as graduating on time or a GPA for example especially for those who left during their freshman year

I have no problem with the sitting a year rule (unless a coaching change occurs or some other exceptions).  And I have no problem with the mid year transfer rule (basically losing a year of eligibility).  I'm not sure it's a good idea to start crediting half a year eligibility.  Once you enter a game you use a full year of eligibility unless you can get an injury exception.

You want to reward a kid for doing his school work and maintaining a good GPA, while getting a free education.?

He made a choice an changed his mind, sometimes you have to give something up to get what you want.

And full release from schollies wit no 1-year penalty when they is a coaching change. The end.
Parking only for NYCHA permit holders.

but in a case of coaching change I think ted's idea is pretty reasonable but if no coaching change I'd agree with you

I understand your point but I think the NCAA would then publically be admitting the kid is picking the coach and not the school and I don't think they will do that.

Nobody loses a year of eligiblity, not sure what that means.  The rule is you get to complete 4 years of playing eligiblity in 5 years.  So assuming you did not burn a year redshirting already then your sit year is not a lost year of eligiblity, it is simply a sit year.

Secondly Branch will play 4 years.  Yes he will miss some games in 2 different years because he transferred mid-year, a quirky transfer, but that does not mean he did NOT play at all those years.  He will have played in live games last season, this season and then presumably 2 more seasons.  That is 4 seasons.  Remember if he waited and transferred at the end of the school year in May he would be sitting this ENTIRE season out as opposed to just the first few games.
