The D league is about two years away from being a real threat to college basketball.  It'll never surpass the fan loyalty and enthusiasm etc, but the league is starting to fill up with really highly ranked prospects who fans know about..

Look at the D league stat leaders... These are first round picks, McDonald all Americans, guys that would be all Americans if they stayed until their Jr/sr years of college.  But now more kids are going to declare because its not just NBA or you bust and goto Europe.   You can get drafted and start your career here in the US.

Problem is the $.  These are just high draft picks being sent to D-League still making mucho money.  The average player just signed to the D-League I read makes like $50k.  That's nothing.

You're right, nobody watches.  I'm not trying to say the D league will have more fans or viewers... people are emotionally invested in their favorite college teams.  Real passionate.
But I'm saying this isn't the old CBA.  And the D league has only been around since 05-06, they started with 8; they're already up to 16 teams, and Stern has said he expects every team eventually to have it's own affiliate.   That's another 180-something spots for pro basketball in the US.   Kids won't be afraid to be a 2nd round pick anymore, because now it just means D-league.   
And for the 1st rounders who get demoted, they don't care - their contract is guaranteed.

I'm just saying, the D-league is a few years away from being a legitimate minor league system, that is going to be stocked with talent that everybody knows.  Talent that should be in college, and may have not taken a chance in the draft if the D-league wasn't such a comfy landing spot in case things didn't work out on draft day.

Look at the '08 recruiting class, guys that would be juniors now.   Some are obvious pros and have a place in the league.. Sullinger, Kyrie Irving, Brandon Knight etc
But 7 of the top 15 recruits from that year are in the d league right now.  Perry Jones, Will Barton, Melo,    Those are kids who should be juniors.   And I don't know if they all would've come out early if the d-league didn't exist.
What's it going to look like in a few years when there are 30 teams in the d-league?

That's a good point. I didn't think about that. It could definitely hurt college basketball if players aren't afraid of being 2nd round picks.

This is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read.  Nobody wants to see D-League players.  College basketball is so popular because alumni have a vested interested in how their school's perform. Nobody will ever feel that way about the D-League.

This point (alumni support) is often overlooked.  I remember sitting with 300 other fans at Hofstra watching the USBL.  Those teams had pretty talented rosters.

The trouble with the D-Leauge is that it's a combination of (baseball equivalent)  Pioneer Ball, Independent League, AND Triple A all rolled into one.  You've got raw rookies drafted solely on potential, down for a few years "seasoning" (Pioneer).   You've got High Draft Picks - kids on the cusp - either a couple of minor flaws to work on, Rehab assignments, or logjam at their position (Triple A)  and you've got Aging Vets, Drafted and Undrafted Players with Big League skills but "issues" that need to be forked out (Independent League).    All in one mash-up.    The amazing thing to me is the number of kids from all three of these camps that Do eventually get a call up.

Been following hoops for a lot of years.  And I KNOW there are guys in the D-League (DJ certainly included) who are BETTER right now than a lot of guys on NBA rosters.   I mean, Luke Freaking Walton is still on the Cavs bench.    I watch my Lakers struggling with the worst bench in basketball, with almost no help at the 2 and 3 for Kobe and MWP - Ebanks?  Meeks?  Darius Morris??? And wonder how a player like DJ can still be IN the D-League.
