Since my comment on GG inspired all the eye-rolling, I’ll explain myself.  I suggested he’d start and some agreed but those who did suggested only at the beginning of the season.  I said he’d “breakout” and some thought I’m delusional, which is generally true.

Here is my thinking.  As bobre45 responded, GG was part of a “six man team” last year.  We couldn’t do without his big body in our small rotation, and our gameplans always called for GG to be extremely careful not to be overly aggressive and end up in foul trouble.  He played passively which wasn’t his nature.  He can be more aggressive with Sanchez and Obekpa here.

GG isn’t a banger on the blocks, playing with his back to the basket, and isn’t good taking little shuffle passes in that position.  He is better 5-7  feet from the blocks.  With some separation he can make a move.  I don’t have statistics, but it seemed to me that he had a pretty high field goal percentage last year.  And when he gets fouled he is a pretty good free throw shooter.

Apart from the fact that more bodies on the team will free GG up to play more aggressively, I think the fact that he is a senior and this is his big chance to step up is not lost on him.  This is his big and last opportunity.  He has risen to the occasion throughout his career when put in such situations where he needed to really do well with his back against the wall.  He did it early in his career in Nigeria where he leapfrogged a bunch of good players to get noticed (I’ve heard some stories).  He thrived under the pressure in JC to take it to the next level when he needed to.  I think with CO and OS in the fold he will reach new heights because of the internal competition.

As I said above, some people think GG will start the season and see his playing time diminish.  GG sees the writing on the wall too, so I think he is going to be a monster right out of the gate to make sure he’ll keep getting substantial minutes.

Must differ. Gift has poor hands, is not a solid defender, lacks court awareness and is quite raw. Prior experience was at D2 Juco level. His main asset is speed getting out on the break and occasionally setting picks. Hopefully he has improved, but I see him getting less and less time as season progresses. Just my opinion!
GG has a body like Elton Brand but none of the skills. I'd like to see him use some of that muscle to his benefit.  He runs the court terrifically but has backed down on contact so far- maybe to avoid fouls but more likely just his nature.  I expect Jones to steal his minutes unless he wakes up.

I have seen only some highlights from the first few games.  However, what do you guys think about the starting lineup, once the season begins, now that there has been some live action?  Have your opinions changed?

For shits and giggles here's mine.

 Greene
 Harrison
 Jones
 Jakarr
Obekpa

1st off bench-  Sanchez, Amir, Pointer, Bourgault.

Maybe I would switch Amir with Jones?   Not sure?  Thoughts?

I don't think we can play ineligible guys. I think NCAA frowns upon it
Obekpa
Sampson
Garret
Harrison if not suspended
Greene

Jones, Pointer and the unredshirted GG whom someone actually compared to Wes Unseld early last season as others were just comparing to Dajuan Blair.

Who is ineligible?

Sanchez and Bourgault until we are told otherwise. Do you expect either to be playing by the first game?

I would hope so. I mean, how hard is it to figure out what grade someone is in?

If that is the issue I agree
Again, though that is the issue according to SJU
In my experience the longer any type of investigation goes usually the worse the outcome is.
Hopefully they are both eligible but I would not count on it being resolved by the first game at least.

True, can't say I disagree with any of that.  Longer it sits out there, the smellier it gets.   Kinda like the food in my fridge last week.

I like your lineup a lot.

Lavin said yesterday Jones will start next week.
I think Sanchez Amir and Marco are first off the bench.   and after that; sub for guys when they're tired.   But don't go nuts with substitutions.. build some chemistry.

We were told a decision on Sanchez and Bourgault would come within 7-10 days. What takes that long?

Also, as good ( or improved) as Phil Greene has looked this season, I would venture to guess that he would perform better coming off the bench than Branch when Branch becomes eligible.  Greene can be a nice spark off the bench.  Not sure Branch can bring that same energy in a back up role.  Maybe I'm wrong. I haven't seen too much of Branch.... Has anyone?

The best things about sports is they are unpredictable. Dam I have to retract my D-LO Top 20 PK comment. He is a young man and I have no problem with him making mistakes but the reason I consider him a top 20 was his mental make up and leadership qualities. Not saying he won't bounce back but now something I was not even concerned with the coach see problematic. Now I am thinking with Phil Greene improving and Dom improving, should we bring DLO off the bench in Jason Terry ala Jason Terry?Since Lav compared D-Lo to Zona guards already. It is not who starts it is who finishes and I am 99% sure he still closes out games?

Attack basketball, pressure defense, 40 minutes of hell ... Early on it might be 30 minutes of hell, then 10 minutes of what the hell are you doing?"

Anyone that has Jones starting over Garrett at the three needs their head checked.  Have you seen Garrett play?  Have you seen this team?  We will need to cling to Greene-Harrison-Garrett for our dear lives until Sanchez and Bourgault get cleared.   Take away Greene and Garrett and this team wins 15 games.

We need skill players badly.

I'm not saying at the 3, but Lavin said post game yesterday that Jones will start next Tuesday.   I'll see if I can find the quote.
And, I tend to agree with him - Jones deserves to start.     So I think the question becomes do you start Amir or Sampson?

After watching the 2 exhibition games , I was very impessed W Amir and CO. I would go w a lineup of Greene, DLO,Sampson, Sanchez and CO. I would play DLo @ the 2 and play Jones and Amir first off the bench. Jones was a real steal and I have to commend the staff. But Im not ready to concede he is better than JS , or OS. .. Of course Lavin said DLo will be the pg and Jones would start.
