7 + Marco and Orlando =9 plus branch in December make 10. However, I support red shirting gift for one he's academically superb and I'm all for him getting some additional complementary education and for 2 we will be very thin next year if he and Sanchez were gone. Felix on the contrary not sure I'm sold on his case. Thought he looked good in the scrimmage and is a tremendous defender and  good slasher

Was Dangelo in the dog house or was coach giving other guys some pt?
I mean they were playing jamal white and Ndiaye in the.first half even.

Harrison was benched for minor infraction at start of game.

At St.John's, 10 players is not enough. We will be exposed for a lack of depth. What if we should have 2 injuries? We certainly will. We always do. The NCAA is a disgusting organization, however, this red shirting bs is garbage. You are recruited to play, you need to play.

Lavin and Redshirting:  In 7 years at UCLA, players signed by Steve who  redshirted (for a variety of reasons!)  were:  Moose Bailey, Rico Hines, Ryan Walcott, Joshiah Johnson, Jon Crispin, Kevin Daley, Spencer Gloger, Billy Knight, Ray Young, Brian Morrison, Quinn Hawking, Gene Barnes, John Hoffart, Cedric Bozeman,  and Janou Rubin.

JaKarr Sampson showed little in the way of freshman hesitation and scored from all parts of the floor. Chris Obekpa swatted away more than a half dozen shots. And Christian Jones continued his unexpected drive toward a possible spot in St. John’s starting lineup with excellent inside play.

That deep roster Steve Lavin has raved about wasn’t very deep last night in St. John’s exhibition opener against Sonoma State.

Junior college transfers Marc-Antoine Bourgault and Orlando Sanchez were held out of the contest, along with God’sgift Achiuwa — the team’s lone senior — and freshman wing Felix Balamou, leaving the team with seven scholarship players in the Red Storm’s 73-55 victory at Carnesecca Arena.

Lavin said he is considering red-shirting Balamou and Achiuwa, though it is dependent on the uncertain eligibility of Sanchez and Bourgault who are awaiting “separate eligibility rulings from the NCAA regarding classification,” St. John’s announced before yesterday’s contest.

St. John’s could learn the results for Sanchez and Bourgault in a week to 10 days, a source said. The source said it has nothing to do with academic issues, which was the case last year for JaKarr Sampson, Norvel Pelle and Amir Garrett, were ruled ineligible by the NCAA, but is based on age and classification. It is likely, a source told The Post, the 24-year-old Sanchez, a 6-foot-8 wing from the Dominican Republic, will be ruled a senior and the sharpshooting Bourgault a junior.

This crap from the NCAA really eats at me.    There is NO standard.    The Pac 10 2008 All-Freshman team featured U$C frosh Forward Davon Jefferson, who got 12 pts and 6 rebs for the Trojans.   All FRESHMAN team 2008.   Davon Jefferson was  born in 1986.

Alfred Aboya was the UCLA starting Center as a senior in 2009.   He was an academic All America.   As a Freshman 4 years earlier, he was the backup PF and C on the 2006 UCLA team that lost to Florida in the NCAA title game.   Freshman in 2006.   Aboya was born in Jan 2, 1985.

How can an age determination take WEEKS to be made?  It's senseless.  This is the same NCAA that Allowed NFL Rookie Brandon Weedon to be classified as a FRESHMAN at OK State in 2008 - when he was TWENTY FIVE years old.

Finally got to see the game on replay from a friends house. Here's what I saw:

Christian Jones - Wow, freakish athlete. Looked solid defensively and rebounded well, although you can't tell much from the competition. Very adept offensively from what I saw has a nice midrange and gets in triple threat position very well. Definitely looks like he can play at the Big East level physically and skill-wise. Don't know why he was so under the radar, but glad we got him.
JaKarr Sampson - Pretty much what I expected (rebounded well, good on the boards, elite athlete), minus the good looking jumpshot. Ugly form, but good results. Nice spin move from him also. Looks good, but I think Mo had more upside offensively last year. Don't think he's an one and done, but we'll see.
Amir Garrett - Looked like he was the most improved early on. Looked better with the ball when creating for himself (some bad passes when trying to create for others). Very good on his shot today. Good effort on defense also.
Phil Greene - A close second to most improved imo. Looked much more confident out there, better shot and moved the ball around better.
Sir'Dominic Pointer - Looked about the same as last year. Had one nice move getting to the rim and finishing, but thats about all.
D'Angelo Harrison - Injury or idk what couldve happened. Wasn't into this one at all.
Chris Obekpa - Great athlete. Really liked how he went after and up for rebounds. Great timing when going up for blocks. Looked exactly what I felt he could be. Will be a key part on this team.

GG possible redshirt - I would do it if Orlando is ruled a senior. We still will get two scholarships and have two elite prospects we are looking at. No need to have empty roster spots and the more seniors you can have the better in terms of trying to win.
Marco and Orlando - I would hope they have the extra years. Think they both will be players at this level, but we'll see.
Felix possible redshirt - This one is easy. Definitely a good move considering he is still improving. Can be a very valuable 4 year player.

Overall, a lot of things to improve on but good start. We were basically without D'Lo today.

The thing that impressed me most with Jones was his passing. He had about 3 or 4 real solid passes into the interior. Also impressed with Jakarrs jumper, really has no hesitation which could be both good and bad. Really hope there is no snag with Sanchez and Marco because they are going to be key in making the offense run smoothly.

Phil Greene also looked greatly improved, much bigger and poised. I think hell see 30 minutes a game until branch comes back.
*wipes ketchup from his eyes* - I guess Heinz sight isn’t 20/20.

the mid-range game is what excited me most about what i saw. Jones, JKS, and Phil all showed a really nice touch from the mid-range.  i think Sanchez has a nice mid-range game too.  this will help us tremendously with the half-court offense.

add DLo, Marco, and Phil from the 3-point range, and i think we have nice offensive balance all around.

Dom and Obkepa just need to worry about defense. If they can do that well, they'll get their minutes.

I'm really excited about Phil.  He looks confident, his stroke has improved, so too has his ball handling.  he's a smart player, who doesn't force it.  wouldn't be surprised if he's our 2nd leading scorer.

agree with everyone;s comments on Phil--even my wife commented during the game that she thought he showed good improvement.  i was most impressed with Amir.  Loved his defense but thought he must have been sneaking of to the gym during baseball season and taking 500 shots a day.  if he continues to improve his outside shot throughout the season, the Reds are going to start worrying about Lefty wanting to take the mound or will he think about playing both?

Amir can become a really good college basketball player if he becomes a capable shooter.

Phil Greene in the exhib reminded me a bit of Virginia Tech guard Erick Green -  Erick was a "sleeper" recruit by Seth Greenberg.  As a frosh combo guard got abut 13 minutes a game, and about 3 pts.   As a soph fought his way into the starting lineup, 30 minutes and 11 pts a game.  Last year as a Jr. he took over at the point, got 16 a game and was 2nd team ALL ACC.

It is my understanding that the NCAA rules for basketball (different than football) mandate a 25 year maximum age.  For every season a student athlete starts after the age of 21, they lose a season of eligibility.  I know Fordham96 has sworn that no age limit exists.  There are certain execptions (Religious missions and military).  I don't see Sanchez getting a second year.

As for Bourgault, I think his five-year clock started when he enrolled at Montanta State and was subsequently ruled inelgible.  Bourgault has a pretty decent claim because he missed his first season at Monroe with a knee injury.  The NCAA has given a sixth year to several basketball players the last few seasons.  It seems unfair that Bourgault would lose two seasons due to no fault of his own--especially when one of those seasons was because of ineligibility due to his foreign transcripts.  It would seem unfair to ignore the precedent set recently just because Bourgault missed his season due to injury at the NCJAA level and not while playing in the NCAA.

So how did 29 year old Brandon weeden play last year under this age limit rule?

So, until yesterday, the NCAA had no idea that Sanchez is 25 years old? What are we missing here? This doesn't add up.

What is the logic for this rule.    So "Rudy" Ruettiger SHOULDN'T have been allowed on the field for Notre Dame at age 27 after busting his hump fpr 5 uears after high school to qualify for college?
