I don't know but I had dozens of employees with "tempestuous personalities" and benching them wasn't an option.  People are all different and you have to figure out what makes them tick before you sit them out (or Suspend them in my case) and go without their services.  Don't know why Lavin can't get through to the kid but benching should be an absolute last resort.

Unless you are a head coach of a Major Men's basketball program I think you should lay off the analogies.

I expect him to play 30+ minutes on Tuesday and then I think everyone will forget about this.

Unless you're an experienced manager you should lay off the criticism of a valid observation.  A lot of coaches don't have to resort to benchings to control their players. In our case it isn't the first time and I think the wrong guys are being focused upon.

How do you know this isn't a last resort?  Also, Lavin started with not starting.  Then by all accounts he moped around and played lackluster.  Next, benching...in an exhibition!  Lavin doesn't seem like a hardass unnecessarily, I am sure the benching was more than deserved.

Cut and dry:

If the star isn't above the law, then no one is.

If you dont send that msg then see where your team ends up.

Except he didn't break the law, according to TGAPL he forgot to put money in the parking meter. That's not even a misdemeanor. So either Lavin is lying when he describes the conduct, or he's hyperventilating when he describes the possible outcome of the conduct, which he claims might "compromise the integrity of the fabric of the team." Neglecting to put a dime in a parking meter doesn't compromise the fabric of anything.

It may be that he's trying to light a fire under Harrison's ass and that this is the way to do it. It may be that he's trying to teach his freshmen a lesson by showing them that he's willing to humiliate his best player and maybe that's a good idea in the long run. There are uglier possibilities as well. I don't see this team going much of anywhere this year but I fail to see how any of this is a net positive.

Bobre is way off.

Glad Lav sent the message early on.  D'Lo and the team will be better because of it.

Kids being benched for disciplinary reason happens all the time.   This isn't on Lavin, as Bobre ALWAYS tries to insinuate.   Come on.  It's a crappy exhibition game no less.  This is 100% about Harrison. He needs to stop sulking and play with that fire we saw last season.  If he doesn't, well, then we are in for a long season.

Everyone should play by the same set of rules, whether you are Sam Sealy or D-lo.  Lavin knows what he is doing and how to push the right buttons with his kids.

My guess is Lavin is actually doing D'angelo a favor by not revealing the infraction.   Harrison has an uphill climb to make the league as it is.   Scouts will only drop him further down the board if it became public that he got into a fight at practice or was skipping classes.   Lavin knows this, he's disciplining the kid but not ruining his chances to earn a living down the road.

Of your two options, I'd bet coach is "lying".   But in this case I don't have a problem with it.

If he really wanted to do him a favor he'd have said he tweaked his hamstring in practice. He's already fueled speculation (or at least there have been comments, and not just here, I saw some on twitter) that DH might consider transfering. I don't think that's insane but sometimes rumor is worse than truth. Lavin's clearly sending a GAP message, the only question is what message and to whom is it directed,

Lavin knows what he is doing and how to push the right buttons with his kids.

Exactly. That's why Polee, Stith, Roberts and Lindsey had such fabulous careers at SJ: because TGAPL knows exactly what buttons to push when. He's infallible, nearly. Oh sure, all of those guys were pussies and quislings, but still sometimes its hard to know who's not worth the effort. At least until after they transfer, when their deficiencies become manifest.

Obviously not even close to the same thing but when I was in playing little league baseball my dad was always the coach.

The rule in the league was everyone had to play at least 3 innings. Early on while I was real good for whatever reason my hitting was just average.

One of the 1st games of the season ( first game we had extra players ) I hit a monster home run and we take the lead ( huge morale boost at the time for me ).  My dad walks over after I cross home plate and tells me he's benching me the rest of the game.

I was crying like a freaking baby. lol

He calls the team over in front of the stands where the parents sit.

He tells them and the parents that everyone sits at some point in the year and no one is above the team and he's proving it by sitting his own son first.

No one ever questioned him ever for a benching.

We went on to win our world series the next 2 years so at least there was a happy ending

Heck part of me is still angry at him for that now 30 years later but I'd do the same exact thing if I were in his position

Today's athlete is coddled and babied from an early age. The solution to dealing with a tough circumstance is usually blame others, look to leave ( transfer), or sulk and complain.  The true ones battle through and become better athletes and men ( or women).

Foad's examples, with the exception of Quincy, fall into that category of softies.....sorry

Bobre is still pissed that Evans was sat. Never mind that he sat for not buying into what the team was doing. He is complaining about Harrison sitting because he wants to throw Evans into the conversation, which then allows him to attack Lavin because he still thinks Mark Jackson should have been hired. The same Mark Jackson who has been shitting up the court in Oakland.

This is not Billy benching Reggie.  Who really cares?  College coaches do this stuff all the time.  Almost as much as high school and college players transfer.

I don't want the Tempestuous Personality affecting the rest of the team. He was supposed to be the team learder. Not what I want to hear at this point. I trust Lavin will handle this.
