St. John's tips off against Detroit (JohnnyJungle.com)
« on: November 12, 2012, 04:08:19 PM »
Learn a little about Detroit's roster. Will televising exhibition games come back to bite St. John's? What does St. John's need to do to win?

I've taken over the pre-game columns again for the site. Feel free to post your thoughts....

I'm going with SJ. 71-59

Greene gives their pg fits. Obekpa arrives on the scene in a big way.

Maybe the games being televised is why we played man to man.   On the other hand there is plenty of tape of our matchup zone from the last two seasons.   But, you can certainly find new wrinkles to add when you have Obekpa to protect the rim.

When has our crowd ever made it hard for the opposing team to call out their sets? Not exactly like we are Death Valley down in Baton Rouge.

are we still thinking Harry won't be in the starting lineup? No way right?

Lavin has said today that he isn't starting.

One of the other threads has quotes.  I think they are from Harrison tho.

No. He spoke about it. It's on the Red Storm Sports site. He even acknowledged that there are a lot of good players on the team. Lindsey wound up at a low level MAAC program. That should be pretty good incentive to tow the line.

Has Lavin said that he isn't starting for disciplinary reasons? Is it possible Lavin sees him benefiting the team more as a spark off the bench? Sort of like how Ginobili comes off the bench for the Spurs.

I'm going to update with quotes. Was published prior to press conference.

I think Lav is trying to insure that Harrison's head doesn't swell too early. He'll buy in. He loves Lav too much not to.

I dislike benching guys though for disciplinary reasons. Make him do something extra at practice but don't let it effect a game. Just my philosophy.

Sounds like coaches are trying to get him to control his temper when the refs screw up, which happens often in these games.

Makes sense since SJU needs him to avoid picking up additional fouls with his mouth or body language.

What do you guys think of Detroit gaining an advantage by having film from exhibition games?

Depends on what we're going to run?  If I was coach McCallum, I'd tell my team to shoot all day fro the outside.  If I'm Lavin I might just throw some new stuff at them.   We had a lot of holes in our exhibitions.  If we tighten me up, we'll be tough..

I'll add Dave, that I bet our staff gets their hands on tape of Detroit as well.  When I played high school football our coaches had tons of tape, even on other team's scrimmages.  Hard to hide.

They already know we can't shoot, so we know we'll seeing a zone. That was probably their plan before they saw video.

Yeah, but we have some forwards that we can drop it into that might be tough to handle.  Plus, Harrison certainly can shoot, Greene cant be left open and even Amir can hit sme shots.  We're not devoid of shooting as Jakarr and Jones can hit drainage shots better than most SJU forwards in recent memory.  We need to defend perimeter and we need Obekpa to create a problem down low.

I agree, but we have not been showcasing a 3 point game. Frankly I couldn't be more pleased that we're not. I just hope we get out on their shooters and harass them into bad shots and mistakes.
