Balamou does not look like a freshman.  The poise, the patience, the pace he plays with...wow.

Astute observation brother.

Thing that surprise me most so far of any new player is the poise in which FB play.

I expected the hops, the lateral quickness, the 15-footer. But I thought he was gonna be a turnover machine because of over aggression like we see sometime from Dom - doing too much, makin bad decisions, drivin witout a purpose.

The brother has 1 TO so far this year.

Its early and he only got serious minutes in the the last three. But still....

Was nice to see. Lotta positives.

But 'fore y'all go leaping, I think Fla Gulf would beat SC four outta every seven games.  Just sayin.

Lavin can only coach one team.

When first-year South Carolina coach Frank Martin was building Kansas State into a power, he had his eye on D’Angelo Harrison. On Thursday night, neither he nor the crowd at Carnesecca Arnea could take their eyes off  St. John’s 6-3 sophomore guard.

St. John’s coach Steve Lavin has used Madison Square Garden and the bright lights of Manhattan as one of his core selling points to prospective recruits. His current players are looking forward to playing at the Garden, too, but they have become very comfortable at cozy Carnesecca Arena also.

D'Angelo Harrison continued his torrid early-season shooting pace, and St. John's length and athleticism on defense simply were too much for South Carolina as the Red Storm routed the Gamecocks, 89-65, as part of the Big East-SEC challenge Thursday night at Carnesecca Arena.

Observations from the game.

For starters, our defense was better. We were getting after loose balls, and closing out on shooters more than in previous games. A better shooting team would have hit more of those shots, but there was noticeable improvement.

Balamou - He plays like someone pressed the FF button. His athletic ability is freakish. He finishes in traffic, and defends with a ferocity. I see it becoming contagious.

Harrison - Played his best game. Didn't force up threes. Really bought into the team concept on offense. Perhaps he has grown up some in the last few weeks.

Obekpa - I, and everyone else in my section thought he had more than one block that was ruled a GT. He is far more useful on offense than I expected. He simply isn't trying to make that his game. But last night, he looked great on offense. One move in the first half made my jaw drop. It was a spin move from the baseline, and he banked it off the glass.

Sampson - that wacky jumper goes in. He's settled down from the Detroit game, but there is one thing that he almost never does: box out. That needs to be taught. That 6'5 freshman camped under the basket every time a shot went up, and he pulled down 11 boards. Against better teams, we will need our bigs to stick their ass in someone's stomach.

Greene - More of the same. Poised, confident and ready to lead. It's great to see.

Garrett - Finally had that bounce back game. He's finishing with much more consistency this season.

Pointer - He moves the ball around well on offense, but when he puts it on the floor tries to get his own he is often out of control and taking incredibly low % shots. I like your heart Dom, but you are not D Wade.

Bourgault - yikes. I wish him the best, but he is too slow to be out there for any extended period.

Jones - seems intimidated by larger defenders. He threw up a fade away hook shot that looked as if he was trying to avoid getting blocked.

Overall, it was nice to see us house an SEC team. I know they're not Kentucky or Florida, but hey, that's not our problem.
We need to build on this and run the table to the BE schedule. I'm hoping that 10 wins gets us in.

Fwiw Poison, SC entered the game as a very good shooting team.  We just locked them down for the most part yesterday.  I've seen quite a few Big East teams play this season thus far.  We are going to perform well against plenty of them, especially if we get Sanchez.

Got more info from Kara Lawson announcing this game than I've heard in the last couple months on Sanchez.   Clarifying it's the time between starting school, dropping out when his folks died to support the family, then coming back to school that's at the root of the delay.    Also liked her quoting Earl Watson - a National TV audience (well, as national as espnU gets) heard Earl's opinion that Sanchez is "good enuf right now to start for the Utah Jazz".... Good stuff.

I'm not a big fan of commentary by broads outside of voice overs in porn films but Kara Lawson did a credible job as color analyst. I especially appreciated her extended remarks in the second half about how SC was "really really soft." Her disappointment in the softness of the cocks took me by surprised as I assumed she was a lesbian. Regarding Orlando Sanchez being by far the best player on SJ and how he could start today in the NBA, it sounded to me like she was describing Walter Berry, who's the last and only NBA ready JUCO big SJ has ever had. If he's as good as she says - which I find as hard to believe as any other good news - this team will get very good very fast when he arrives, which arrival I similarly tend to disbelieve.

It was a good win last night.  I really like the lineup of: Obekpa, Sampson, Garrett, Greene and Harrison.  Some of the other lineups I am not crazy about.  I know some people are down on marco but I still think he can be of great value if used the right way.  I don't think it is wise to have him at the top of the zone, he is too slow.  I would put him on the backside where harrison usually plays; where he can use his height and his lack of speed would not be so apparent.  On offense I would like to see him come off some screens.  The problem is no one sets a good screen anymore, I am talking setting your damn feet and putting body on body (a lost art in my opinion).  The rebounding still sucks but hopefully it will get better.  I can't wait until Branch is cleared and still hoping orlando gets cleared.

Marco will probably benefit from a penetrating guard like Branch. Penetrating and kicking to perimeter is not part of our attack at this point. We will see if Branch helps Marco get more looks. If not, I sense he will continue to get negligible minutes. That's ok.

Few quick notes:
Marco has a really nice looking jumper. Best looking one since Larry Legend was forced out by Norm. It is too bad that SJU plays two shooting guard together becuase Marco needs help to get shots, which he will not receive. Most likely will not be in the rotation at all once Branch is eligible.

The best passer on the team is.....a tie between Sampson and Pointer

It is fun to watch all of the shot blocking but everyone except CO bites on any head fake which is one of the reasons we can't rebound. Everyone within the area code of the shooter leaves their feet. Leaves everyone in bad position to rebound. This is also the reason I believe Pointer has already been called for two flagrant fouls and they almost killed the kid last night.

Game was fun yesterday but SC was the worst school we played so far IMO. Not talented and quit. I am surprised Martin's head did not explode.

They were no the worst school we played so far.  I'm not getting too high after a win but come on with that statement.

I stand by that statement.
Maybe over the course of the year no, but off their performance yesterday, yes they were the worst team we have played maybe in last 3 years actually.

Watched Felix at IS8 last year and he is taller, more intense on defense, more in control on offense and plays like a video game character come to life.

Peppy LePew's jumpshot will be better looking than Harrison's when it starts going in 40 percent of the time. When it does he'll remind me of Sergio Luyk. Until then he's Fred Lyson in a beret.

Agree about South Carolina. They were about the worst team I've seen this year.

What I find funny is that FGCU and Detroit and HC played us tough at times but everyone was expecting an ass kicking.  Then we go out and kick the ass of a BCS level team and they are the worst team we played.  Meanwhile if South Carolina played FGCU, Detroit and HC 10 times willing to bet that they would win the majority of the games, no?  So wouldn't that make them the better team?

Its very easy to say they played like crap last night.  Far easier for fans to say than that we made them play like crap.  That being  said after Williams hit the deck all momentum and drive went out the window for them sadly.  They were within 9 and he hit back to back 3's.

Again based on how they played last night any other team we played this year would have beaten them IMO

There's something slightly stiff and akwward looking about that Jakarr "top of the key" shot, but it seems to go in every time  :)

Chris Mullin he is not.  That being said, he is a much better outside shooter than I had anticipated entering the season.

And something you don't see too often now a days is he looks for and is proficient at knocking down that mid range jumper.
