What do you guys think is going to happen when St. Louis comes to town? I am sure the fans are going to come out and watch Xavier or St. Joes.

St. Joe's won't be involved and no guarantee STL is invited either.

either way, it's a preview of the "new" big east as it sits today.

In your mind maybe.  The schools made the right move.  As for the piss poor fan base that has nothing to do with it.

I'm one who will not miss playing a 'home' game in MSG with 75% of the crowd being Cuse fans.

75% Cuse fans but St. John's still made money from the game being at MSG.

It is go time. We need to develop a Basketball only league and then Win. Put teams in the NCAA's, get to the Final 4 and win a National Championship.

By the time Norm  finished we no longer had 6000 fans coming to games  in Jamaica. By the time Jarvis finished, we no longer had 6000 fans in Jamaica. When Hardy's team went to the NCAA's, we did not have 6000 fans in Jamaica for their games. And even if we could get 6000 fans there, playing all our games there will not pay for our current staff, and will destroy our ability to recruit. Bottom line is we have to play the bulk of our games in the garden, and unless our fans come out and support the team, we will become a second rate program. For years, we blamed the administration for not investing in the basketball program, improving facilities, and hiring a first rate staff. They have now done their part. And our fans still sit home and recite the mantra of excuses for not going to the games. It is incomprehensible.

moose- respect your opinion just dont understand it. How can we pay a big time coach and get big time recuits if we dont make any money. Back in the 90's there were plenty of cuse and uconn fans at the garden but there were also plenty of st.johns fans and ny fans at the garden. Playing  Butler wont bring in 10,000 fans. Butler vs St. Johns wont be on CBS on a saturday afternoon.
Goal should not be to break even- goal should be to win national championship.

This is a ridiculous discussion, why would anyone have high expectations for our attendance at this point?   We've been above .500 in conference play once in the last decade.

Recruiting success builds momentum among us, the diehards.   But if any other program's record was as putrid as ours you would expect them to have terrible attendance - and we are no different.

Lets make the tournament two years in a row, and if our attendance still sucks then everyone can bitch and whine.
Franchises and programs at all levels struggle to bring fans to games when they have no recent history of sucess.
Anyone who went to a Mets game in September this year knows what I'm talking about.

Where did I ever say it was the goal.  I'm just telling you how overrated it is with selling out MSG.  So long as we pay them rent and we break even on our end we won't be running a struggling coach out of town.

The issue is not who is in our conference its our pitiful fan base.  Michigan State played friggin Tuskeegee in some old archaic gym they haven't used since 1989.  They couldnt even hold all their season ticket holders.  People were turned away.  We play a game in brand spankin new Barclays Center with plenty of ways to get discounted tix and nobody shows.

Do you know the enrollment difference between us and Butler?

Mets game is apples to oranges.
How many home games we play versus them?  They are outside.  Beginning and end of the year is a bear sometimes in terms of attendance with night games and cool nights.

For a school with an enrollment the size of STJ there should be a much higher benchmark # of fans.  Bottom line.

I'm excited about the new league however attendance is a problem. Something has to be done to create a culture where going to games is normal for our fan base.

Winning helps, but if we are going to be one of the leaders of this new league, our fans have to get behind it and support the team by filling CA and MSG. We won't sell out MSG, but a 10-12K crowd would be nice.

Who stayed for the last game?  Attendance is listed at 16,514.  Was this a Mich and WVU game and they added us and the other game last minute or something?  Because I'd like to even give our fans some benefit and say all the tickets were snapped up by those two fan bases.

I think our game was added last minute.  When this was first announced earlier in the year it was a double header.  We weren't even listed on the billboards Barclays bought along the LIRR.
It just showed the Princeton- Fordham and UM - WVU games.

objectively speaking, st francis is arguably the least attractive opponent on the schedule to see us play against (pomeroy has them at #224).  most non-conference-game-attending fans have already paid for, and gone to, games against njit and florida gulf coast.

I remember going to games at "Alumni Hall" in the pre Mullin late '70's when it was standing room only--the FD had to be looking the other way.  We still have season tickets.  maybe folks need to start buying tickets now.  That will enhance atmosphere and increase recruiting.  The school has spent the money on the coach and his staff and upgrading the facilities.  NOW it is the turn for those on the fence to get off the couches and come to the games

Like Chudney pointed out, Carnesseca doesnt hold 6,000 :). I think with the renovations it holds something like 5008 fans.

It is comprehensible and the answer is simply losing.  In this saturated market,  fans will only come out to see winners period.  I don't expect us to draw well with one tourney appearance in +10 years.  I was just surprised by the "less than 1000"  fan comment. That is Way low.  You guys have hit accurately on all the good reasons.  1) Prohibitive ticket pricing; 2) Local game but not part of season ticket package; 3) Weak non-glamorous out of conf. opponent; 4) Brooklyn's close but it's not Queens; 5) Decade+ of bad basketball (my favorite)

I'm going above and beyond on Friday as I'm bringing a party of 8.  Let's hope we both draw and play as well as the S. Carolina game.
