Youth Basketball Advice
« on: December 15, 2012, 04:58:09 PM »
I know this doesn't belong here but I trust one of the moderators will place it correctly.

I'm hoping to tap into some of the expertise on this board.  I've been coaching our boys (we've got 8 year old twins) for k thru 2nd grade basketball in our school in-house program.  We did a lot of fundamentals so the kids are pretty good with the basics.

Our 3rd grade teams start playing other schools now and the competition is much stiffer.  I'm looking for insight on realistic expectations for this age as well as effective drills and offensive and defensive concepts that they'll grasp. I know many of you have coached youth teams and I would rather not reinvent the wheel.  I want the kids to continue to develop in all aspects without overwhelming them.

Thank you for any thoughts you can share.

This is the "know how" and "know when stage". Shooting form will eventually change with added strength so not too much focus on that but more emphasis on building a personality and a mentality. Alot of dribbling drills are great for the youth because it will carry over in the future, knowing how to play proper zone and man defense should start at this stage too. You'll be suprised how many highschool kids miss assignments. Because they don't understand help defense and how to properly Rotate in the zone. " know when" is essential too, knowing when to pass , shoot and dribble are skills and habits that need to be developed early, because if not taught properly from early will plague kids thru there careers and will be hard to break out of because it has become habitual. Hope that helped.

You should google all of Dunlap's drills. Then you can be the coach everyone hates when your kids are beating teams 80-6 ;D

Who better to learn from than Hall of Fame coach Bob Hurley?

http://hoopgroup.com/skills/bob-hurley-basketball-camp/

Also Father/Son camp pretty much answers your question in a pretty awesome weekend..

You can call 732-50-BBALL if you have more questions.... ask for Chris Zupko he runs both camps.

Thanks guys... I will follow up on the links and glean all I can.  I appreciate you sharing.  Also, living on the west coast, I enjoy everything you bring to the board.

Thanks
