I understand the anger and I am not here to defend him, but again was the coach for the most fun team we have ever had and I was around for the Final Four team. So for my list of worst coaches in history of the program(everything included) Jarvis falls behind Norm,  Mahoney and probably Fran

It was a really fun team to watch. But the chemistry came from the fact the Erick, Ron and Jessie all played on the same AAU team for years

So Mo Hicks was REALLY the coach of the team :)

I agree. He does. Everyone falls behind Norm. At least Mahoney could recruit.

Or you going by coaching or overall devastation to the program? If that is the case Jarvis is by far the worst.

Jarvis did irrevocable damage to St.John's. There's no doubt about that. However, as a game coach, some of our greatest wins, and highest profile came with him as our coach. Mahoney and Norm had almost no success. Mahoney couldn't coach, and Norm couldn't do anything well, except be nice. He was great at that.

Mahoney and Norm had almost no success.

Mahoney was BE coach of the year and won an Ncaa tournament game his first season before the wheels came off.

Mahoney and Norm had almost no success.

Mahoney was BE coach of the year and won an Ncaa tournament game his first season before the wheels came off.

And the very next season they took it back from him :)

I like Mahoney. I know him well, and while he was able to land several big name recruits while at SJ, he didn't round out the class w the necessary role players. That was one problem. The second was, he treated freshman like seniors, and never once made them feel like anything needed to be earned.

That approach caused the team to implode. Promising young players like Derek Brown were forced to play out of position, and seniors like James Scott, who mind you, had his own issues, probably should have started from the beginning of the 94-95 season.

Mahoney had so many pieces that year, and the best he could do was 15 wins and a terrible BE record.

Norm couldn't recruit, so he never had talent like that work with. The fact remains, neither could coach, and that is what it comes down to. Norm lost to countless local scrap teams. He also got housed in the BE. So did Mahoney. I remember each and every disgraceful loss.

Wit full respct, one of the reasons Mahoney was able to recruit so well is that he inherited a program:
- that was comin off a quarter century as one of the Top 25 programs in the nation.
- that was almost a lock for an NCAA tourney each year.
- and whose alums had major repreentation in the League (Mullin, Jax, Sealy, Williams, Wennington, Werdann).

In other words, the trajectory was up in '92.

Choz, all true, but to his credit, the 92-93 team wasn't loaded w NBA talent like the previous team. He overachieved. His biggest problem was expecting Turner to be able to lead us. He wasn't able to.

No doubt.

Not recruitin a suitable replacement fo David Cain was his downfall.

If Cain/Mahoney dont show evrybdy how valuable an elite PG is, nuthin will.

Nice article from Lenn Robbins in the Post today about Branch's debut, although I cringed a little when I read the second sentence: "Is St. John's about to boast the best backcourt in the nation?"  Way to manage expectations, Lenn.
