5 blocks a game doesn't make Obekpa one of the best freshmen in the country.   I agree.
Love that we have him, but the guards on that list avg more rebounds than Chris.

Sorry, disagree.   If he was getting 28 pts a game, he'd be on the list, even if he was zero in other categories.  If he was pulling down 16 board a game, he'd be on the list.  If he was getting 9 assissts a game, he'd be on the list.    And those numbers are LESS than the equivalent of what he's putting up in blocks compared to all time D-1 production.... Will he improve?  Maintain status quo?  Fall back to earth in the coming 20-30 games?  I don't know.  But the article is NOW, based on what HAS been accomplished to this point.   And he belongs on the list.  Easily.   Try this for an exercise in research.  Find the number of players in D-1 HISTORY who have 20 blocks in a two-game span.   Or the number  with 8 or more blocks in a game 3 times in one season (here's a hint - Anthony Davis got 8 in a game TWICE - and that was his season high).  Good luck.

+1.  Love when CrGreen lays it down.

I love having Chris & he is an very integral part of our team, but..
Until his offense, rebounding & on his man defense improve- he doesn't yet belong on that list.

JaKarr is a much more complete player at this point.
Thats my view & I know I'm going to get heat for it.
My sentiments exactly. Sampson overall is the better player. He is also the one I am most worried about making the jump to the NBA after this year.

a great player because he impacts the game.  i'm willing to bet incoming teams and coaches prep for him in practice.  even if they won't admit it...he's on their minds.  nobody likes to get rejected.

Funny, because this article gives Sampson more publicity for the omission than the other players get for making the list.  Either way, he WILL be BE rookie of the year, which counts for more than making this list, IMO.

"As we mentioned late last week, the biggest omission from the USBWA Freshman of the Year was St. John's forward Jakarr Sampson, who is clearly the best newcomer in the Big East. He's averaging 17.8 points and 7.0 rebounds in his last four games – and he's put up double-digits in 19 of his last 20 games."

Not if he is as smart a kid as I think he is and has the right people around him.  Look, I've said it before and it bears mentioning again.  Harkless was already shooting up the NBA draft boards by this time last year.  I haven't seen a single boardHis game was clearly better suited than Jakar's for the jump after one year.  Jakar has a nice mid range game and can do some things in the open floor, but Mo was far and away a better ball handler, rebounder, and had more range.  Me and a bunch of Johnnies fans were saying it tonight.  I really hope Jakar plays this out the right way, because he could use at least another year and will better prepare himself for the league.  Would be fun to see him next year as his game continues to develop and he fills out.

Sampson is doubtful to leave. Too skinny to play inside and too unpolished from perimeter.

Obekpa, while playing very well, isn't deserving of mention in this company.

St Johns has alot of resources in the NBA so JaKarr can get an honest feel.

Mark Jackson at Golden State. Dunlap in Charlotte. Werdann is an assistant somewhere. Then there's Lavin's connections. Honestly, if Samspson keeps playing like this, St Johns plays well this month to get into the NCAAs, he would be someone's first round draft pick.

Don't agree, but Zags loves to stir pot IMO.

“In my opinion, he’s a first-round pick, he would be in the middle of the first round,” one veteran NBA scout told SNY.tv Wednesday evening after Sampson scored 18 points and hauled in six rebounds as St. John’s beat UConn, 71-65. “If he continues to play well, maybe even higher. Long arms, quick feet, jumps out of the gym, an improving skill-set. He’s a player. A guy like Sampson, he has great upside.”

Agree Sampson is not ready despite this Scout's take.

But he is a stud.  And for those who were convinced that he would not be able to replace Moe Harkless' production guess again.  He arguably has been Harkless' equal as a freshman.

Man, what if Moe had stayed????!!!!!

And before anyone erroneously says it.  Moe coming back would not have prevented Sampson coming.  It would have eliminated Sanchez from consideration.

Agree Fordham! Sampson has developed nicely. Excellent mid range game, improving as a rebounder and a fierce competitor!

I would hate to see Samson leave , but his stock has been rising lately. The NBA drafts on potential and Sampson has plenty. I think he should stay but the thaught of $ could be a motivater.

Jakar is out of here the only people who cant see that is St.johns fans. Would not suprise me if so CO left as well end up on the spurs or ok city late 1st rd riding there bench for a couple of years getting top notch coaching. Also Harrison is starting to regress again I think he is off to Europe after this season.

Expecting entire team to leave with exception of Sam Sealy.
