It's 2013.  Not 1950.  A 1st round Ncaa loss is better than an NIT title.

It isn't even the 80's anymore, no one cares about NIT
NCAA and NIT need to sit down and expand NCAA field (one way or the other) and perhaps first weekend losers can move to NIT in a smaller field

No! the bigger the field the worse it gets IMO

Winning NIT would be great for us. Play and win some more games. Then play 2 big games in front of packed garden where most of the fans are rooting for st.johns.
Packed garden? Which alternative universe do you live in ? ??? :)

I would rather get blown out in the tournament play-in game than win the NIT.

No doubt it's a great tournament.  It's a thrill for fans of smaller programs and generally draws well.  The semi's and finals at the garden usually have good crowds and have often been darn exciting.

But for a lower to mid-level BE program like us, the big dance has got to be the goal.

Just saying the nit win was much better then the next year when we lost to Wisconsin in 1st round. I would rather make the NCAA . But winning the nit in my opinion is better for the program then losing in the 1st round.
Gotta retake the garden

We retake the Garden by winning our big in-conference home games.

A couple of years ago we did that by beating Georgetown, then ND, then UCONN (and Duke in there too) .. that set us up for Pitt and the best home crowd we've had in 10 years.

I agree Tony.  Especially with a really young team.  Winning the NIT can carry over nicely to the next season.

Have been going to NIT semi's past few seasons as it last chance to see some live college hoop and games are usually entertaining but if by good crowds you mean 5-6,000 than yes I guess the crowds are good. When we played G'town and Tech in NIT final four crowds were good but not packed which I take to mean a near sellout (I was there for both).

Man, that was such a special year and team. Just gave you a glimpse of what can be if we were consistently a top of the conference team.

Sendek was smart and fortunate to add Musselman to staff. I know Rico is supposed to have player development expertise, but not so sure that has positively impacted SJU. Guys like Musselman don't grow on trees, but I still think we need similar infusion of technical expertise. Dunlap certainly met that criteria.

“@franfraschilla: Love this story on @EricPMusselman. Great addition for Herb Sendek. Like Fred Hoiberg, would great hire for someone. http://www.ridiculousupside.com/2013/2/27/4030244/eric-musselmans-knack-for-player-development-is-proving-to-be-a

-2  These are still inexperienced underclassmen, they'd benefit long term far more from some success in the NIT than a miserable NCAA experience.
