3. ST. JOHN’S (17-16, 8-10 Big East)

Coach Steve Lavin has arguably the most talented roster of his four-year tenure and the pressure will be on him and the Johnnies to live up to the hype and help carry the flag for the new Big East without Syracuse, Louisville, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame. Junior guard D’Angelo Harrison, the team’s leading scorer at 17.8 ppg, is expected to work his way back onto the team after being suspended March 1, and all eyes will be on his maturity level. JaKarr Sampson, the reigning Big East Rookie of the Year, also returns with his 14.9 ppg and 6.6 rpg as he attempts to build his NBA profile. Chris Obekpa brings his 4.0 blocks per game back for his sophomore season, and he will be joined up front by Orlando Sanchez, a 6-9 senior forward from the Dominican who was given a waiver to play this season. The Johnnies bring in talented Philly combo guard Rysheed Jordan, who will have to mesh with Harrison in the backcourt for this team to maximize its potential.

It probably sounds like a stretch now, but I think Dom has a chance to make an all Big East team this year.
He came in with the athleticism to be a star; and since then his shot, his handling, and his passing have improved far more than anybody else's.
If he gets the playing time I think it'll happen.

I don't think Dom will make an all Big East team just because our team has too many scoring and rebounding options but I think he will be playing at a level that warrants recognition.  Possibly 6th man of the year like Burrell got in 2011.

If everything works out well for us our depth will keep some of our players off the all league teams. But I agree Desco, Dom is primed for a big year.

Yea, I think that'll be common theme this year Mase.   Guys individual numbers are going to be held down by our depth.   I'm sure Jordan could be BE ROY (and maybe he will be) but he's going to have to fight with D'angelo Branch and Greene for minutes.   Obekpa should be much improved, but we've also heard how good Sanchez looked in practice - so you gotta figure there will be some minutes lost there.

If the depth is as good as we think it is - I'm hoping this is the year we can truly play some suffocating, high intensity defense.   Lavs has been talking about doing that since he got here - but this is the first time he's ever really had the horses to do it.

Agree, they have a lot of experience coming back and will be pretty good. looking forward for some revenge from last year's game that the friars eeked out. Would love a sweep or a split with a BE T win in the rubber game.

I think it is just understood that there are 6 members of the 1st team with McDermott as the POY and the 5 others.

Much like old BE with POY Porter and 5 others.

Obekpa should be much improved, but we've also heard how good Sanchez looked in practice - so you gotta figure there will be some minutes lost there.

Agree Chris may lose minutes, but not to Sanchez.  I think Orlando takes a few from Jakarr, and gets the rest of his from Amir's vacated 20 a game.   Chris will lose minutes to Gift.

When was the last time we saw TWO STJ's players predicted to be 1st team? I think maybe 1999-2000. (Barkley & Thornton, yes?)

Interesting.  You see Orlando playing most of his minutes at forward?
I agree that he's not a prototypical center but that doesn't seem to be a prerequisite for coach.  (And really, who on our roster is a real center?)   I think our best frontcourt is Orlando and Jakarr; I'd be surprised if those two don't start together, and play more minutes than anyone else.

And, my feelings on GG are pretty clear - but it would be a huge mistake if Obekpa lost minutes to Gift.   Aside from foul shooting down the stretch, that's almost incomprehensible to me.

I think that's right, but in fairness, it's not the same BE.
