Was mentioned in the Diallo thread, mentions us in this article someone on Redmen found:

"I’ll cut my list to 10 schools by the end of next month and the end of the (July) recruiting period,” Turner said of his recruitment. ”Distance is not a factor — it can be Oregon, St. John’s, anything — but distance isn’t really a factor for me. Anywhere I feel I can really be developed and go to the NBA and have that great family structure and try to win a championship; that’s where my heart is going to be"

Would love to hear that we're on this kid.   Seems that our worries  the staff was only recruiting wings might be premature.   This is the fourth or fifth true center we've been mentioned with in '14 or '15.  That's a good sign I think.

It remains to be seen how serious this kid is about us, and we are about him - it appears SJU is the only east coast school involved.  But with that said, he looks like the kind of athletic big man that can do a little bit of everything.  No glaring huge holes in his game.

Optimist that I am - I take all of this sudden interest in 2014 Bigs to mean the staff feels Obekpa is imoroving so rapdily that leaving at the end of the coming season is a real possiblity.   Otherwise, why take a chance on bringing in a guy who could likely scare off a 2015 like Diallo, Govan or Bryant?

He's a top 10 player in next year's class!    You sign him in a millisecond, and deal with 2015 when the time comes.   A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush... and such.

Obekpa's pro-prospects aside (and I don't think he's going anywhere) SJU is still likely losing 3 players over 6'8 in Sampson, Sanchez, and Gift.  It's not a mystery why the staff is looking at bigs in the 2014 class.

I think it is more that, projecting forward, CO is really the only "true" 4 or 5 that we'll have after next season, besides Jakar who some speculate might make the jump after the 2013-2014 season.  We know that Gift and Sanchez will have graduated, and will need multiple players at those slots.  Plus even with Jakar as a junior, he will have developed enough of a outside game where he could play with two post players for certain stretches.

Very true.  Even with Sampson and Obekpa here, we would still need another post player.   It would be nice to consistently have two centers on the team...

Is turner definitely worse than those guys?  He's a probable mcd AA based on his current ranking.  Gotta take him and figure it out if he's truly interested. If CO goes pro early and we have two of those four to replace him, champagne problem

The fact that we're mentioned with so many quality bigs in '14 and '15 has got to be music to a lot of our fans' ears.

Turner, even Chukwu, Diallo, Zimmerman, Govan, Bryant.   It's actually incredible when you think back a few months and the vast majority of us thought that coach Lavin's focus would remain on recruiting versatile wings, and that a true big wasn't likely in the plan anytime soon.    Looks like we were wrong.
And that's a great sign, because although it's early, with Lavin's batting average we usually land one or two of every five guys he aggressively recruits.

Is there anyone on the staff other than Lavin who has recruiting ties in Texas? Its a hot bed of talant, glad we have a presence.

Our TX players have opened the pipeline.  Chiles is often down in TX and the south recruiting.

Yup.  And I'd say we want at least two post players for 2014-2015.

Agree - but when you're talking Diallo, Zimmerman, Myles Turner  you're talking 1 and done or 2 and done at best.  You KINDA want that OTHER post to be a 4 year guy.  I personally prefer the Duke/UNC/Kansas/UCLA model of building a program to the Kentucky one.  I don't think we're (yet) in a position to score multiple one-and-dones in every recruiting class - which is the ONLY thing that makes the KY model work.

You say the "Duke/UCLA -model" like it's a conscious choice they've made, I say that's bs.  If UCLA could sign multiple top 10s at a position they would.   But for the

Nobody says "oh we have the #1 center now, lets stop recruiting the #2 center, even though we have a chance at him, because he might be a one and done too".

And, it's a moot point.  SJU has yet to sign one player of that ilk, so I'm not exactly worried that we're running a risk of becoming like Kentucky.

If you read Calipari's recent comments about what his program and recruiting are about, you'll understand the difference in his model, and the one you're describing.
