Good schools on him.  Super athletic kid.  I certainly wouldn't mind a forward to replace Sanchez entering next year.  I'm guessing his upside potential is high.

I'm with you on this. I know Dave isn't high on him, but if we are going to whiff on true bigs, we may as well go small as long as the guy is bouncy enough.

Then again, the other part of me says that we need more basketball-players here at SJU,  not just athletes.  I'm torn here, but I don't know about other options.

Assuming Sampson stays and Lavin does what he needs to do for 2015, Swift would at worst be an undersized athletic backup. No real downside to that. But the first two factors obviously would be crucial.

Think is that we will still be without a guy that can score in the post as right now, Sanchez and Gift are the only guys who have we nose for the rim.  Jakarr of course can, but is more the wiry athletic type.  Going to need a PF type that can score inside.

Jones has a year to improve. Already might be the best back to the basket option we have. Which does make you wonder
*wipes ketchup from his eyes* - I guess Heinz sight isn’t 20/20.

I've heard next to nothing about this kid.

Looks like another wing athlete with no jump shooting capability. Xavier was happy to part ways with him.

Melvin Swift, a power forward from Houston who attends the same high school that current Minuteman Clyde Santee did named the Minutemen as one of his finalists Tuesday on Twitter.

Melvin Swift Jr. ‏@ThatBoySwift:
"Such a blessing to announce the top colleges I'm considering are:
St.John
SMU
Baylor
UMass
UCONN"

Swift, a 6-foot-7 power forward, had originally committed to Xavier, but re-opened his recruiting. UMass is currently at its full scholarship total for next year meaning someone currently in the program would have to leave or someone expected to come wouldn't for Swift to get a scholarship.

ESPN Recruiting analyzed him as follows:

Strengths:
Swift is a very athletic power forward who runs the floor like a deer and plays above the rim on all clear path and angles. Swift has good strength that allows him to finish through contact with touch and body control. He excels in transition and also scores with short, quick slashes. In the low post Swift hit turn shots over his left shoulder and simply elevated and extended over defenders with ease. He attacks the offensive glass and is a tip in and dunk threat if not boxed out aggressively. Swift also worked hard on the defensive end. He denied the low post and displayed good anticipation in the passing lanes. Swift plays with great energy, urgency and competes. Swift also seems to be an excellent physical condition because he can run and jump all day long.

Weaknesses:
Swift must continue to build strength although he is wiry strong. He must work on his perimeter ball handling under pressure, passing on the move and extend his shooting range although is serviceable at all these skills now but improvement would take this already high level player to the next level.

Bottom Line:
Swift is one of the most exciting power forwards in the class on the break, on the glass, blocking shots and finishing in and around the rim. He productivity will increase as his ball skills improve."

Houston, TX (Future150) -- In the class of 2014, there are very few prospects left in the Future150 rankings who are not yet committed to a school.

One of those prospects is bouncy forward Melvin Swift, the #102 prospect in our rankings. The 6-foot-7 forward is a high upside prospect who has a good amount of upside.

Right now, he is more of a power forward prospect, a kid who excels in the transition game and when he is crashing the boards and finishing around the rim using his physical frame.

With the proper instruction, he could develop into an effective wing at the college level. He also has the tools to become a big time defender at the next level.

As it stands, he is down to the final five schools in his recruitment; Baylor, Connecticut, SMU, St. John's and UMass.

Didn't realize Xavier told him to take a hike supposedly during the summer after verballing.  Might he want to stick to them?
