the Lavin PR machine is in full effect.  last year the problem was "youngest team in america" and lack of depth.  now it's whether this team gels...

Lavin can spin the gel point all he wants, but ultimately, gelling talent is his job.

Getting talent, which he has done well, is one facet of his job. Another is pulling this group together to achieve at least a top four finish in BE & win a game in NCAA tourney. That seems reasonable IMO.

Yes but February is more than half of the season.

Lavin's teams all the way back to his UCLA days, are strongest in February and March. Lavin's talented teams also don't usually advance in the ncaa's.  I don't think Lavin is trying to make any excuses.  We have a lot of pieces, and like every other team out there, needs to gel.  This is more the case with running and fast-tempo teams like us.   All teams need the early season to feel things out.

and replace him with who? as disappointed as I would be if we didn't make the tournament this year, he has made the program relevant again. Rome wasn't built in a day, This is still only year 3.

But you have to also then acknowledge IF it did happen that we missed the dance it would be 1 appearance in 4 years and ironically it was with Norms kids.  That couldn't be ignored in light of the caliber playing we have been getting.

I personally don't look to much into the quote about us not playin out best basketball until February. If I remember right the 2010 team didn't exactly play there best basketball until February as well. We stumbled early to Fordham & I think St. bonaventure. I think he is likely implying that he sees us hitting our stride in February so that we can make a run in March. We will be fine

What I find interesting about all of this gel talk is that we got started before everyone else (and Lav's previous teams) by going on the Euro tour. That extra time practicing and playing in exhibition games should speed up the timetable for this team to gel. The team should gel before February.

Lavin should just come out and say that the team had a head start on everyone else.  They should be ready to steamroll over all opponents and, if they don't, the players will have proven they don't belong on this level and he should be fired for having recruited them.  Enough of this coach-speak.

Seriously, every team in America isn't playing their best ball until February.  Lav didn't say he thought they were going to lose a bunch of games in the OOC, he just said he expects the team to be better.  Every coach looks at the beginning of the season as a challenge and basically says the same thing.
