Player X vs. Player Y
« on: December 19, 2013, 09:01:14 AM »
Time for that good ole game of Player X vs. Player Y.  It's been awhile.  Both players are the same height and close enough in weight based on published numbers.

Player X

Soph, turning 20 years old by the end of the year.
13.2 ppg
6 rpg
1.9 apg
.8 bpg
Shooting 54% from the field
0-3 from 3
27 minutes per game

Scout's comment- 'continues to show off his elite leaping abilities, and a nice little midrange jumper. What scouts want to see more of is his 3-point shot. He's only taken three all season, and hasn't made one yet'

Player Y
Soph but 1 year older almost to the day
12.5 ppg
6.3 rpg
.5 apg
.9 bpg
Shooting 53% from the field
1-4 from 3
28 minutes per game

*Which player would you think is projected Top 15-20 on a draft board, and who do you think they are.

I know who both players are.  I won't ruin it for the others.  It's surprising that one of them is ranked so highly.

Jerami Grant and Sampson.

Numbers are almost identical like you are showing. Sampson deserves to go just as high. If he can gain a little more weight/muscle and work on his shot more, he will be a beast.

His jump-shot form makes or breaks him.  It's as simple as that.

X is Grant
Y is Sampson.

Grant is listed as 16 in ESPN Draft Big Board with that comment I posted.  To me the comment could have been Karr if you just read it.  Then you look at the near identical numbers.

Good comparo...  Always interesting when you look at the numbers without a name.

Two guys sitting behind me at SF game, not SJU fans---neutral observers.  I tried to detect who they were fans of. Might have been Cuse because one lamented Grant going in the draft.  One guy raved about Jakarr's talent.  Said he would start over Christmas for Cuse and would start for most teams. Told me how lucky we are to have gotten him.  We all have different perspectives.

There's more to this game than statistics, that's what gets GM's fired. What matters is how he scores, what impact he has on the game, and if that would translate to the next level at his most likely position.  It doesn't matter that JS FG percentage is 53%. He can't shoot. He can't pass. He can't dribble. He can't defend. He's a second rounder at best. Luckily for us, he has 2 1/2 more years to improve.

Karr is a real favorite of yours, huh?

I like the he can't shoot comment.  Is he a horrid shooter?  No.  Is he Doug McDermott? No.  FWIW last year Grant was at 46% and Karr at 45%.  So improvement from both of them 1st to 2nd year.

Speaking of improvement I was watching Florida the other night.  Check out this career path.  Talk about a jump.  4 star kid ranked around 70 coming out of HS.  Hasn't gotten going until now, his Sr year.

It has seemed to me that Jakarr hasn't been taking nearly as many jump shots and has been taking it to the rack way more often, which is a good thing for him IMO.

Better point guard play is definitely helping that.

grant and jakarr.

While I don't think grant is as good as a pro prospect as he is listed he is definitely a better one than Jakarr. Now that doesnt mean hes a better college player than Jakarr, actually I'm not sure which one i would choose. Its a toss up right now for who is the better player in college.

I think that's absolutely true, and just increased aggressiveness and confidence in his strength. His first bucket yesterday he drove all the way from the 3 pt line. I  like seeing that a lot.
