New Wrinkles for Big East
« on: December 29, 2013, 12:04:16 PM »
Anyone think/hope  Coach has saved some new looks for conference play? Full time-full court pressure?  Half court trap? Interior passing?  Alleyoop to break zone from behind?  Four guard offense  for stretches?

Well he ruined the Felix secret weapon during the youngstown game.

Only thing he can really do now is wait till the Big East Tourney and start Christian Jones at center the 1st game of the tourney and play him for 5 minutes to really confuse the other team

I hope not, that is why there is an ooc schedule. To work on those things you mentioned.

We should definitely add new looks/wrinkles as season goes along.

Some things yes, but interior passing? why hold out on that. Stuff like you mentioned needs to be worked on in games. Shouldn't be brand new once conference play comes.

Against a zone, how many times this year have you seen us pass to a guy on the foul line and then have him dump it down when the zone collapses on him instead of passing it back out?

Not very often. And we very well may  start do that (I hope we do), but are you saying that Lavin has purposly saved this for conference play? what is the point in that? To hide from your conference foes the fact that you like to get the ball to the foul line and then dump it down low?

We were working on other things...that took awhile to come together....not really looking for high low....not holding back, but not where we could try and do that consistently....hard enough for us to get the ball to the foul line.....one step at a time....team clearly has been taking baby steps......we are  now ready for  more steps.....we'll see.....it's been sampson flashing to foul line....when it's sanchez he could dump ball down to sampson, but it typically hasn't been....

I think that the rotations will become steadier. I doubt we see those line changes against Xavier like we used against Columbia

Limit teams to one shot. Win the turnover battle. Get to the foul line by a commitment to get to the rim. Playing hard and staying focused for 40 minutes. There's nothing fancy there. With the level of talent on this team, thats enough to win a lot of games. Can the guys get it to happen?
I could not come up with any new wrinkles.

I've been thinking that the staff has been holding some stuff back--defensively at least.  I doubt they would purposely not want to work on interior passing or different lineups, though.  Hahaha

Those are the types of things that need to be refined over several games.  I will continue to hope that the staff will press for the majority of the game as always.

Interior passing isn't an optional strategy you can turn on and off, it's like rebounding ... why would you ever not want to do it?

My point is that team has been working on other things in practice as points of emphasis....such as closing out on three point shooters.....passing to the foul line against the zone....keeping hands up on defense, boxing out, etc.....once those are inculcated (perhaps, not yet) other wrinkles can be practiced...emphasized....
