Before you jump off....
« on: January 04, 2014, 09:48:02 PM »
Wait for this team to play a conference game at home. I can understand the frustration, confusion, anger, and all the emotions everyone is feeling right now but wait.

Not saying things will change for better/worse or making an excuse for poor execution, lineups, energy but it is tough getting road wins in conference. Always has and always will be.

That is about as much glass half full I can muster.

Appreciate positive tone and agree on difficulty of road wins in BE. What concerns me, however, is how uncompetitive and discombobulated the team is. Hard to envision a noble effort against Villanova & going forward, but I will certainly support the team.

Agree, even though I think Villanova beats them also.

Wish I could place bets with some members on this site. Would have made a killing on the Georgetown game!

No can do. Loss doesn't bother me as much as not putting the team in a position to win. If road wins are so hard to come by, why start a Ndiaye and Balamou?

All joking aside that still has me puzzled 9 and a half hours later. Might be the oddest thing I have seen a coach at SJU do since I have been a fan. Too bad no one will ask coach that question and demand a coherent answer. The NIT thing was weird, but this was absolutely bizarre!

I mean it is obviously not why he did it but it is almost as if he read these boards and was trying to piss everyone off????

Perhaps the worst part is that after the game he said his mistake was not playing N'Diaye more. Another solid week of practice for him and he'll be starting next week against Nova too. That's scary

I can say that playing at home or on the road, we aren't going to win many games if we don't box out and every player without the ball (ex Hooper) just stands in one spot until the ball is passed to them. Maybe that's why playing Jordan is so critical to Lavin. He is the only who gets penetration consistently in the half court.

Dave, what are your thoughts on Baldi's comments that we should expect "big" news this week?

i have supported the team during worse times but i see them losing to nova.  they do however always lose to them  in overtime so those games are always competitive.

If I were a "jumper" as this subject heading of this thread suggests..

I would leave a note behind saying "I was pushed".

On BEB Fun has an interesting theory that Lavin is coaching for next year. This makes sense on a couple of levels. First by coaching straight up w/o gimmicks if this team failed to make the tourney then  real people might start questioning Lavin's coaching once again. I think there is a possibility that Lavin realized that this team he kept pointing towards was going to struggle to make the tourney. So by tinkering around like Dr Frankenstein and supposedly teaching lessons with suspensions and benching's he covers himself as being some kind of teacher and a man of principle. Then Fun reasons Lavin can take a veteran squad next season to the tourney and leave on his own terms as a savior.

The only issue I have with this theory is I think at this point we can all agree that it would be a great shock to see Jordan here next year and if anyone else transfers like say Obepka you could argue that the team will be worse next season.

Not sure I don't read most things Baldi posts.

Agree. I got nothing to argue against that.

Other possible explanations for yesterday's lineup:
Lavin has an evil twin
Felix and walkon guy kidnapped Lavin's wife and won't return her unless they start remaining games
Lavin had the same procedure they gave Jack at the end of One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest
Lavin hates the people on this board
Lavin was kidnapped by Aliens and instead of anal probe they gave him a lineup suggestion
Lavin can't coach-Baron Davis theory
Lavin was named Cuse successor to Boheim but must first try to get fired.
Lavin thought yesterday's lineup actually gave him the best chance to win.-Hah that theory is way to crazy

sure they will win some games in the big east - the days they hit their outside shots they will probably win. But to hope that those days some often is just a wish and prayer. They can run and block shots - thats about it.

Like I said before - its a bad mix of talent - too many of the same type of player. I know Lavin cant really be choosy about the talent because we are really a second tier school for big type talent these days.

Has it been established that the reason for the "unusual" recent starting lineups is disciplinarian in nature?

If it has been established, where and by whom?

I'm not jumping off and never will, but this team has been very disappointing. They are almost unwatchable at times. A lot of reasons for this have already been stated, but...
- Sanchez is a major disappointment and Jordan can be good but wouldn't be very good until he can hit the outside shoot with some consistency.
- There is no offensive scheme, just passing the ball behind the 3 point line until someone is force to do something. No set plays, no pick and roll, no back door, etc.
- They can't stop the 3 because everyone cheats to help on the drive regardless of how hot the 3 point shooter is.
- We seem to be the only team is the country who are unable or unwilling to recruit viable 3 point shooters.
- No player on the team has improved, some may have regressed.
- The coaching leaves a lot to be desired, from game adjustments to time outs to player rotations.
