Save the scholarship

for 2009. I think there is more of a chance to land a better quality player in 2009 while also not creating a log jam of players with looking for playing time causing potential transfers. It would also balance out the number of scholarships in each year. If we sign Williams this means we have only 1 available scholarship for next season.

two players leave next year- TJ and Mase.  So there are 2 scholarships left in 2009.

Malik Stith is already on the way...... 1 scholarship remains if we use the scholarship on Williams

Norm's going out guns ablazing.
He's using up all of the bullets in his chamber. LOL
It's the administration's fault for not firing him in time.

The next coach, however, will be able to use as a fair excuse that he was limited in the scholarships he could offer his first year.

If I were Norm I would use them all too. I would do whatever it took to save my job. Norm does not have the luxury to look to far into the future.

Norm will 'go for broke', the mentality he shouldve had 4 yrs ago.

we're not on any elite 09 player's radar.  if norm can use the ships now...let him go for it.

How is using the scholarship now doing everything he can to save his job?

Do you want to see a 10-12 man rotation again?

Balance out the schollies and shoot for higher rated prospects next season instead of rushing into getting another player of similar quality to the players we currently have.

What you are saying makes a hell of alot of sense but I believe Norm is going to empty the chamber. I would love to see a 10-12 rotation if they could all play at the BE level and produce. That's how you wear teams down.

because the more ships he gives out to "sleepers" the more likely at least one of them will actually be a sleeper and contribute next year.

If he does give out the ship...its a sign that either the player is that good, the other players in the class aren't that great or the staff doesn't think we have a shot at anyone great in the 2009 class...or they know someone else is going to transfer or not qualify.

Let's hope the staff thinks that highly of Williams...

The fact this kid was the MVP in the "select" division at the TOC speaks volumes. I would sign him off that alone. Plus, i could care less what class he's in or where he is from. If he is a "major talent" get him here... I'm through waiting/hoping for one of  these city kids to grow a pair of balls & stop being led around by their noses by their HS/AAU coaches.. ::) .. peace!

I'm with Ken on the issue and I think allowing Roberts and Edmondson to step into the rotation along with Kennedy, Horne, Mason, and Boothe is more than enough and I'd rather have a guy come in for '09 to come into a more established situation and create some years of separation in he scholarships instead of having what we had last year with Mike Cavataio being the odd man out.

I will play the if Williams was so great wouldn't he be signed already card. If Williams is thought by the staff to be better than Quincy Roberts and Tyswhan Edmondson than they should have thought this out before they signed these two. Having 12 scholarship players for next season is more than enough. Balance out the classes

2008 Roster
3 Frosh
4 Soph
1 Jr(Rob Thomas)
2 Sr.(1 open Scholarship)

2009 Roster
3 Freshman
3 Sophomore
4 Juniors
1 Senior

2010 Roster
1 Freshman
3 Sophomore
3 Junior
4 Senior

JJ, isn't Thomas going to be a sophomore this year?  The leaves Boothe, Kennedy, Horne, Burrell, Evans, Coker - 7 sophs.  The scenario you put up, does that assume players redshirting?  Or is Thomas planning on only spending 3 yrs on campus?

I agree that roster balance is a big issue here.  And I think Roberts' signing might have been an attempt just to use the scholarship since Kilpatrick wasn't coming.

And I have an iffy time believing that Donald Williams, if he was spectacular, wouldn't have been signed by Miss State or 'Bama or Arkansas, or by Maryland.  Then again, I'd never heard of the New Orleans Jazz AAU team, and it sounds like he has outside shooting prowess.  He might be good as insurance if Roberts isn't a great shooter, and someone else is likely to transfer.

They got on him late, as did Marquette.  No one had heard of this kid, really, until Bob Gibbons.  Is he the equivalent of a "workout warrior?"  Marquette offered him too, so someone else thinks he's at least Big East bench talent.  I might save the scholarship also...

whoops I have to recalculate I forgot about some guys. However I think Rob Thomas' eligibility makes him one class ahead I'm not 100% positive. However even more so with the heavy freshman class we had we need to balance things out even more so. By the time the 2007 class is seniors I don't want the team to be upper classman dominated having the rest of the team being basically juniors and we'll be refaced with the same problems we are at now in 2012 being completely young.

The select division only means that his team didn't finish first in its initial pool. It allows for second place AAU teams to continue to play, albeit on a single elimination model, in the tournament. It allows for teams to be able to get more than 2-3 games.

I think you're right he should have 3 years left.  You get 5 years to play 4...because he was a partial qualifier he probably won't get anytime reinstated because of his injury which is why I think he tried to come back this year...

thats the reason they didn't medical redshirt him. I'm unsure of his eligibility or what year he is considered perhaps some others can shed some light
