NEW YORK – On Saturday afternoon, Shamorie Ponds delivered what the St. John’s faithful hope will be the first of many great performances at “The Mecca of Basketball.” The Red Storm signee exploded for 31 points, 12 rebounds, six steals and five assists, leading Thomas Jefferson High School to its first PSAL title since 1954, 90-61, over Brooklyn powerhouse Abraham Lincoln at Madison Square Garden.
The Brooklyn native shot 46 percent from the floor (10-22) and converted on all eight of his tries from the charity stripe in front of a raucous crowd at “The World’s Most Famous Arena,” which included Head Coach Chris Mullin, Associate Head Coach Barry Rohrssen and Assistant Coach Matt Abdelmassih.
“You can expect the same out of me, even better,” Ponds said with a smile at the postgame press conference when asked if St. John’s fans can look forward to seeing him put up similar efforts in red and white next season.
Ponds and the Orange Wave will continue their season next week, playing for the New York State Federation Championship at the Times Union Center in Albany.
