Lavin Luck + Credit
« on: December 29, 2014, 12:24:36 PM »
My two biggest issues with him were his inability to stick to a rotation and the lack of imagination on offense.

With ADR and Thomas being ineligible Lavin "lucked" into the 6 man core rotation that has played great together. That has been the biggest difference in the previous 3 years. If anyone has bothered to notice he still plays his 7-9 men with no rhyme or reason, but it is such limited minutes that it does not matter.

As far as the offense again the limited rotation allows Branch and Pointer to play more and not look over their shoulder which gives the team 3 solid passers to go with Harrison who is playing unselfishly and unselfish(partly becuase he is limited)Obekpa. The passing has been noticeably better and that has been the biggest difference in the offense outside of the Defense causing some easy baskets.

Now here is where Lavin gets all the credit in the world. The team might play harder than any team in the country and despite playing a short rotation are in great shape. The commitment to Defense is very impressive and they sort of remind me of that UAB team that made the Sweet 16 a couple seasons ago purely on their tenacious D. Furthermore the team seems to genuinly like each other and are playing confidently and with swagger. All of that is on Lavin as well.

No matter what happens this year I have to say the Lavin era has been truly confusing to date. Two very enjoyable teams and two utterly frustrating teams.

Kind of makes you wonder what could have been the last 2 years with the same roster esentially

I am not a huge Branch fan, but if he would have commited to him at the point and let Greene play his more comfortable position, maybe we make the tourney last year. Whatever, I am just happy the way they are playing now.

I am happy too but the last two squads should have made the tourney, we were talented enough.

Lavin wasn't benching Sampson. Addition by subtraction. As talented as JK is, he didn't do the little things that is required to win games. Dom is nowhere near the offensive threat JK is but we are playing much better with Dom at the four than JK and that's because Dom plays defense and plays within himself. IMO, that is the major difference this year and year's past.

the 2010-11 team won with great defense, this team is no different in that regard at present.

Last year was rough, but I don't think Lavin had done bad job the prior 2 years. We can disagree on his suspension of Harrison, I believed it was the right thing to do.

Lavin just did very weird things that made it easy to criticize him. This year with so few options, its hard for him to do anything but play the best kids he has

Plus couldnt ask for a better year start to help recruiting. Crowds are getting better and like the Mullin/Berry team, the knicks suck which helps our visibility and we are catching the citys attention as well as recruits.

At what point does Lavin deserve that extension?

If he can get Diallo and Sampson I'd be inclined to give it

I'd like to see what players by then have verballed.  God I hate that I have to say these things and maybe posters are poking just to get a rise out of others.  But if you starting 5 next year is:
C- Chris
PF- Jones
SF- Myles
SG- Felix
PG- I don't even know
With a bench of ADR, JDR, Amar, Doughty and Jay Henderson

That is NOT good.

I wasn't trying to stir the pot.  I'm not a Lavin fan either, and I agree that next year's roster is currently pathetic and likely will not be good when recruiting is all said and done, but the team's performance heading into conference play has been exceptional.  Gotta say, I think he actually deserves it.

Sweet 16, walks off into the sunset.
ESPN for a couple years then takes a coaching job in Cali somewhere

That has been my prediction anyway
