And now you want him fired? For the guy from Manhattan who didn't know what classes he needed to take to graduate from Kentucky and then lied about it to get a mediocre job at USF. Did you see Manhattan lose as eight point favs to a 16-17 MEAC team named Hampton? He has talents like Andujar and Pinkel (think that's his name) and loses to Hampton. And you think he's SJU's savior? Every time I watch an interview of his, he reminds me of a used car salesman.
So he's getting canned because St. John's didn't get a ton of recruits huh? Ever consider that Sampson might be superbly talented?
Unreal. You St. John's fans must think you're Duke or Kansas or something. Assuming the players wouldn't leave, I'd have my Pirates fire Willard in a New York minute to hire Lavin. The man has coached several NBA players from his time at UCLA and comes to SJU and wins 20+ games for essentially 3 out of 4 seasons and now he's getting tossed aside because the St. John's administration is like some fashion company looking for a new fad and Hurley and Masiello are "It!".
Come on over, Lav. We'll gladly take you here at the Hall!
Your first mistake is comparing your program to St.John's. Brad Pitt didn't want Jennifer, but that doesn't mean she'll go out with you.
Lavin hasn't done a terrible job. He's done a careless and a clueless job. It's one thing to be a good recruiter, but once the season starts, you need to take those pieces and build something from the work you've done. Lavin can't contribute much during a game, because he has no clear POV for his teams, and he doesn't have players sharp enough to follow the constant changes he makes. This year, we had a lot of leadership, and the kids really manned up.
Still, Lavin took a year off from recruiting, and left the team with no bench, and all of the work he did to recruit that magnificent class 4 years ago was thrown away because 6 guys can't play 40 minutes for an entire season.
I'm surprised to see anyone question the interest in Massiello. I think he's a very good coach, and I've seen plenty of Jasper games. There isn't one player on his team who would get serious minutes in the BE. If there is a concern, it's his recruiting. He's not a recruiter like Lavin, but he's a significantly better coach. His players know what a full court press is. After 4 f'n years, our guys still don't know how to press. That's a coach you fire. We've already suffered through that crap with Brian Mahoney.
This 20 win crap is meaningless if you haven't beaten anyone. All we see is a coach that can't win without seniors. Baron Davis said UCLA was the only team to make the Sweet Sixteen without a coaxh. You may not know what he meant by that, but we certainly do.
