All Steve Lavin has done is win

And now you want him fired? For the guy from Manhattan who didn't know what classes he needed to take to graduate from Kentucky and then lied about it to get a mediocre job at USF. Did you see Manhattan lose as eight point favs to a 16-17 MEAC team named Hampton? He has talents like Andujar and Pinkel (think that's his name) and loses to Hampton. And you think he's SJU's savior? Every time I watch an interview of his, he reminds me of a used car salesman.

So he's getting canned because St. John's didn't get a ton of recruits huh? Ever consider that Sampson might be superbly talented?

Unreal. You St. John's fans must think you're Duke or Kansas or something. Assuming the players wouldn't leave, I'd have my Pirates fire Willard in a New York minute to hire Lavin. The man has coached several NBA players from his time at UCLA and comes to SJU and wins 20+ games for essentially 3 out of 4 seasons and now he's getting tossed aside because the St. John's administration is like some fashion company looking for a new fad and Hurley and Masiello are "It!".

Come on over, Lav. We'll gladly take you here at the Hall!  :smiley6600:

Your first mistake is comparing your program to St.John's. Brad Pitt didn't want Jennifer, but that doesn't mean she'll go out with you.

Lavin hasn't done a terrible job. He's done a careless and a clueless job. It's one thing to be a good recruiter, but once the season starts, you need to take those pieces and build something from the work you've done. Lavin can't contribute much during a game, because he has no clear POV for his teams, and he doesn't have players sharp enough to follow the constant changes he makes. This year, we had a lot of leadership, and the kids really manned up.

Still, Lavin took a year off from recruiting, and left the team with no bench, and all of the work he did to recruit that magnificent class 4 years ago was thrown away because 6 guys can't play 40 minutes for an entire season.

I'm surprised to see anyone question the interest in Massiello. I think he's a very good coach, and I've seen plenty of Jasper games. There isn't one player on his team who would get serious minutes in the BE. If there is a concern, it's his recruiting. He's not a recruiter like Lavin, but he's a significantly better coach. His players know what a full court press is. After 4 f'n years, our guys still don't know how to press. That's a coach you fire. We've already suffered through that crap with Brian Mahoney.

This 20 win crap is meaningless if you haven't beaten anyone. All we see is a coach that can't win without seniors. Baron Davis said UCLA was the only team to make the Sweet Sixteen without a coaxh. You may not know what he meant by that, but we certainly do.

It's hilarious how people are throwing around Sampson's name like he's the next coming of LeBron. If Sampson is the trump card that's being used as leverage as the reason why not to fire Lavin, that's pretty weak. All Lavin has done is win? I don't recall him winning one big east tourney game in several years, that's awful. I only recall him making the NCAA twice in 5 years and in both games his teams were underprepared and were never in those games. Lavin thought he could pull the wool over people's eyes by lighting the world on fire with his first recruiting class and thinking that people wouldn't care what happened next. The Hall would never hire Lavin and you can surely have him. We'll trade you Lavin for your Tiny Morton, at least he can recruit the damn Tri-state. This is like other team's fans talking about how good of a coach Rex Ryan is. Good DC, awful HC. Lavin = good recruiter and nothing else. Even his recruiting has been shaky the last few years with all the non-qualifiers and other nonsense. He'd be a great coach in South Orange, please take him.

Kevin Willard should be the coach of Seton Hall until he wants to leave or retire.

So SHU fans want Willard canned because Seton Hall didn't get a ton of recruits huh? Ever consider that Whitehead and Delgado might be superbly talented? Unlike Sampson, they have already proven that they are superbly talented at the college level.

Unreal. You Seton Hall fans must think you're Duke or Kansas or something. The man has coached several all conference players and has 20+ win seasons in his coaching career. Now you want him to get tossed aside because there might be better coaches available?

When have high expectations for a recruit ever turned out badly for St.John's? Brandon Sampson isn't the next D'Angelo Harrison. Let's not insult the man. He's much more like Dwayne Wade, but with a better jumper and court vision. Is he a shooting guard or a point guard? The answer is of course, yes and yes. He'll also play center, and in that case, he's much more like a Dikembe Mutumbo with Ewing's offensive ability, because Sampson actually transforms into a 7'0 monster who can breathe fire. But only when his team needs him to. Maybe he can also transform into a coach before he heads out for the draft lottery in 2016.

LOL don't forget his jumper would make even Steph Curry blush it's so pure. Without Lavin, there is no Sampson. Without Sampson, there is no SJU!

currently Brandon Sampson is the highest recruit we have. I don't want to concede him, other players, next season and maybe the one after because some of you hate the current coach. He may not be Lebron but he is good.

Yep, and he'll be good for 10.3 points per game, 2.1 assists and 1.5 rebounds as a freshman. Which by the way is a fine first season. It's not Harrison, but it's fine.

But the "evaluate Lavin crowd" sees it, and takes all other good available options into account as well.

But the "evaluate Lavin crowd" sees it, and takes all other good available options into account as well. If that statement makes a Lavin extension a no brainer, why isn't he extended yet?  We know why.  I am still thinking in terms of 10 years, not five.  that is why I would want no more than a one year buyout at most regardless of the year Lavin finishes on his extension (if there is one).

Lavins biggest mistake was raising everyone's expectations. When you look at the big picture, he's been successful at St. John's and we all would have signed up for his record here 5 years ago.

A 10 point freshman season is reasonable. But so is a 1st team all big east as a junior.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, that is all part of the game.

The bottom line to me is the recruiting cycle is still a mess.  With all the various situations taken into account, which is life, bad breaks, good breaks, etc., the staff still needed to "carry Lavin" on their shoulders if they had to, to get the quality of player to have smoothed out the recruiting.  And yes, having some success puts us where we're at today.  Lots of "ifs."

We would have signed up for his record 5 years ago, but the question is will we sign up for that record the next 5? I'm not sure. That's why my fall back is the max 1 year buyout regardless of the year into the extension. And if Lavin and his agent say no to it, I'd say adios.

I basically agree with that.  I'd favor a rolling 3 yr. extension (for re ruiting purposes) but with a one year buyout.  good for all sides and the program.

Must act soon....one way or the other....as in today ideally.

I could live with that as well - sounds good.

This whole thing is just getting ridiculous. The hate for Lavin is crazy. Is he great? No. Is he destroying the program and the worst coach ever like some make him out to be no. My only problems honestly with him is his reccruiting of late and the constant drama surrounding the program. I think we have won a decent amount, been a decent coach overall but why the hell we were playing with 6 guys this year including one big man. That is inexcusable, if this team had a big man or two they would have a good shot to make a tournament run. And now this year we one impact from day one recruit in Sampson and possibly the entire team who played significant minutes not returning. No good excuse for that at all.
