Elite 24 recap
« on: August 22, 2015, 10:00:33 PM »
Sorry couldn't find stats (really don't matter anyway in all star game) but just a little of what I sawfrom elite 24 game..... Both ponds and rawle played well. Each time they got the ball the crowd got really loud and were on their feet waiting forthe NY guys to go one on one.  They both had about 13-16 pointsand were heavily involved in the game (their team won by one).  There was actually some defense which is still relative as the final scores were in the low 100's compared topast couple years were in 130's to 150's. To the individuals: rawle is a bully but we all knew that. He's built like a linebacker and uses his body beautifully when driving to the rack.  He got to the rim at will and even put one guy on skates with a filthy crossover.  Even if he gets half a step, he puts defender on his hip and shields him as he drives and explodes to the rack. He showed some range on a nice three (there were few made 3's overall) also defended well.  Ponds ended up icing the game by hitting two clutch free throws to put his squad up 4 with 5  ticks left. Showed some lightning quickness getting to the rack against much bigger defenders. Used some nifty finishing techniques to score amongst the trees including a reverse I've seen him use frequently, a floater and a little pump fake in the lane.  He showed some flashy ball handling and passing in the open floor. Shot looks good mechanically. Had some trouble with larger opponents as he was one of the smaller and weaker guards there.  Hamidou diallo showed a flash or two but wasn't a huge factor. Trevon duvall came out the gates very strong with a couple nice drives, showed flashes why he's an absolute stud with a mean cross over that he combines with a sweet stepback or quick blow by to keep defender guessing.  Bam adebayo won mvp with Frank Jackson and some other dudes.  Bam had like 21 on mostly dunks and showed supreme athleticism.  Fran said rumors are ponds is a Johnny lean.  Overall I was impressed with ponds especially, as we knew rawle was a stud but ponds is one of the lower ranked recruits in this game and he more than held his own.  Cannot emphasize enough how cool it was to hear the crowd go nuts every time he and alkins got the ball.  The announcers noted the NY pride throughout the game.

Great write-up, Shaun. Thanks.

Not to nitpick but it wasn't Fran who said Ponds was a Johnnie lean, it was Paul Biancardi espn's recruiting coordinator. You're scouting report basically nailed it.

My apologies.  I did find the score sheet for those curious.  Duval had 8pts and 9 dimes, diallo had 9pts, alkins 14, ponds 15 and 5.  Bam the high scorer and one of the Mvps with 21.  Also, forgot to mention that the announcers, mike cozens, biancardi and jay will were raving about slice when they got on the topic of sju and mullin for a brief stint. They called him the most important recruit mullin has brought in. Biancardi, referring to him, said "there isn't a more well liked and better connected man in Ny basketball". also told a funny story how the place they ate dinner at the night before, the pizza shop owner brought up slice haha.

Completely agree Paultz. Despite a high ranking this isn't a 1 and done type or even a kid who will come in and start right away. To me he's a perfect bench guy to come in and drop buckets in a hurry. Those guys are so valuable and often overlooked.

He & Yakwe will be building blocks of stability IMO.

Agreed. Add Darien Williams, Mussini and Sima if they all qualify to that foundation. This team is going to have some real nice pieces to work with.

Yep, him too. If those 6 players can stay for 2-3 years at least then this team can be challenging for Big East titles and second weekend NCAA runs IMO. The others are solid Big East level additions too.

Glad you enjoyed @shaun1345. Was a crazy week prepping for the game and couldn't have asked for a better outcome. Ponds was really feeling the hometown love.
