Desco, zach has flat come out and said, on twitter, that he did not like lavin because he wasn't very good to him. Zach has also said he isn't a fan of sju he is a fan of the ny post. Lavin didn't give him the details he wanted and mullin/his staff does.  They are better for business and his own personal gain than lavin was.  With that knowledge the lavin smear campaign is 100% petty and childish. If you follow him on twitter he takes a lavin pot shot literally every chance he possible has, it's actually incredibly annoying. The dude got fired, he wasn't nice to you, it's over so get over it.

Haha I know that, thanks for the "journalism" lesson, and not anywhere in my post did I say he should be a fan, not even close to the point. Point is zach didn't like lavin because he hurt his bottom line and wasn't nice to him.   He is now using his personal bias to take childish pot shots at a coach who isn't even here anymore and it got old like 4 months ago and still is.  Now I'm a medical student and not a journalism master but im pretty sure that's not the best way to go about covering a team either.  Call it "not being bitter and covering the team as it is comprised now 101"

Can't blame Lavin for not talking about Jordan. What's he going to tell him, the truth? I don't know where Jordan is.

Some fans hated Lenn because he was trashing Norm to us at a bar and saying he was going to write a hard hitting column that week or the next and what he wrote was such bs and not even what he said about Norm at the bar

Heck I think the whole point of him being at the bar was Maven was kind enough to bring him to get what fans really thought of Norm or something like that

I don't think anyone wants him to defend Lavin. Just keep his personal biases to himself when reporting a team.

For every reporter who is on the straight and narrow there are 2 that have biases and use the platform.  Thats the business.

I'm not sure where Lavin and Zach had a fall out but somewhere, somehow and Zach developed a strong dislike for him. He was not shy in letting his personal feelings be known through twitter or his writing. I'm friends with Zach and  he does a really great job in all his coverage but I did not like the way he lashed out at Lav. He's certainly entitled to act however he wants but I think he crossed the line at times and just refused to let go.

Definitely isn't the first time Zach's personal feelings about somebody got in the way of him doing actual journalism

A reporter should not go either way Moose.  They should just be objective, fair and unbiased.  There will always be people who disagree though.  In the case of Zach , he lost his objectivity when Lavin wouldn't  spill the beans on Jordan.

Fair point. I knock Zach for his constant digs at Lavin which obviously were personal because he was pissed at him but the one thing I will definitely give him credit for is his digs at Lavin started while Lavin was still working and Zach wasn't hiding behind an anonymous internet identity or writing nice things but saying things behind his back.

So even though the digs annoy me I give him credit for putting his name behind it

Lenn was just a phony. Someone who definitely knocked Norm behind his back and then wrote kiss ass articles about him. That I have no respect for

I think Lenn also knew he wouldn't have the access he did if he completely slammed him. Zach got frozen out real fast.

I didn't know he got frozen out, but I am not shocked given the tenor of ZB's columns.

I think Vacarro does a real nice job of handling the positives and negatives.

Zach is a far, far better beat writer for this program than Lenn.  I really don't have respect for phony journalists who only compliment people to maintain sources. As stated on here, Lenn gave his honest view of Norm's program to the folks at a bar but wouldn't do it through writing.  He even went on ESPN Radio the week of the Big East Tournament of Norm's last year and said Norm should be given one more year.

As for Zach hating Lavin or Lavin freezing out Zach, the reason Lavin froze him out to an extent is because Zach wrote the absolute truth about him, which happened to turn out to be negative towards Lavin.  Lavin (and his people) then threw their scoops to Roger Rubin, who never did half the work covering the program to the extent Zach does.  Rubin never editorialized or never did anyyyyy type of reporting aside from the few things that SJU threw to him.  I'm really hoping that the NY Daily News gets us a young and hungry beat writer who will get out there, really try and keep tabs on the program (including recruiting) and report on the program year round, and editorialize once in a while on the program.  Rubin never really did that.  Unfortunately, with the cuts at the NYDN, I have a feeling only our home games will be covered for the most part, but we'll see.

Honestly, none of the mainstream beat writers we've had over the last decade or so has done the amount of work or covered the program to the extent that Zach has.  The "shots" he took at Lavin were completely truthful.  Only at the end of his tenure did national media use politically-correct terms to call him lazy (i.e. Pat Forde calling him "low motor guy"). I think the reason he still makes points about the previous regime, even to this day, is there are still SJU fans (and college ball fans in general) who don't understand the inner workings of the program and don't understand why Lavin was fired.  I think Zach is trying to show, as this staff works far harder on the recruiting trail and Mullin appears to be a much more active presence than the previous staff did over their last 2 years or so, how this current staff "gets out there" much more than the last.

Call it the truth or whatever.  That's probably subjective.  He's petty and childish.  I figured you would vouch for him, as you basically act the same way on Twitter.

Our former head coach was paid extremely well and was quite absentee from doing his job, so yes I will take shots.  Amazing how a guy thats in the Basketball HOF and had an extended career in the NBA doesn't feel he's "too good" to be an active presence but the former coach who doesn't have nearly the background or successes as Mullin would hardly step foot on campus.  So yes, I will continue to take shots at someone who got paid well and didn't give a very good effort.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Theo won't being going to his 134th OAR show with Lavin :)
