On a good team Johnson is a solid 7th or 8th man which is what he was at Pitt. He is not athletic or good enough scorer to be a teams best player. He is trying to do too much. Once he settles down he can be an effective 12ppg scorer for this team.

Exactly. No way he is a go to, all BE player as suggested by a poster. His days as Brewster Academy stud are well behind him. Give me that 12ppg contribution anytime.

Not for a good team, but he will have to be for us this year.  1st team, 2nd team, and honorable mention...last year 7 guys made first team.  Plenty of room on there at the bottom for an SJU player even with 4-6 conference wins IMO.  Mussini will have his hands full as a frosh against Big East competition and someone will have to pick up those points.

Incredible atmosphere at Coarseness last night. While I was disappointed we didn't come near to a sellout, the fans that WERE there were loud down the stretch. I hope we can get that more consistently.

Even waking up this morning I still had a hard time processing the fact that we stole that game last night. This team has shown an ability to dominate the last 5 minutes of the game. Last night, outscoring Rutgers 10-3 during that span. We definitely got the good end of the whistle during the 2nd half, but our guys have shown incredible resiliency thus far. Even if its only Rutgers, we lost to a D2 team by 34 points 15 days ago. Really nice strides being made.

Yankuba Sima once again showing he's the real deal, this time doing it against a bigger back line. He keeps it so simple but does some of those simple things really well, especially defensively.

You can tell Felix really embraced being in a roll where he's empowered. He's bought into sharing the ball and was just the right magical elixir to our rebounding issues. He plays so much bigger from the guard spot because of his wingspan and leaping ability.

Mvouika once again up and down, but love his leadership and fire.

We're getting better at breaking the press as a TEAM. We need 4 guys really involved in the press break and it's slowly rounding into formation. Feel bad that Mussini is playing a bit out of position, especially as he faces length and athletes he never faced in Europe, but it is what it is.

We need Durand Johnson to be more consistent offensively. Way too up-and-down for a senior.

Movement off the ball was stagnant for a lot of the night, but success was found throwing it into the post and really driving the rim in the second half. A true grind it out game.

Christian Jones was pretty bad for most of the game, but did some nice things down the stretch.

It was great to win it in front of Lavin, who was texting on his phone for much of the game and not paying attention to it, which is all too apropos for his approach here for the last few years. Nice to hear he was mingling with fans though, as that was always his strong suit and won people over with him instead of the results and effort of his actual work, or lack thereof.

Really hoping we can get Ellison and/or Darien Williams back. I know the lines used were "sore foot" for Ellison, but would he really be in crutches and in an air cast for that? A bit skeptical that was it, but hope I'm wrong and he's available for Maui or somewhat soon.

Overall, nice win and an even further indication of the culture that this staff has put in place with a roster that was assembled in only 3 months. Onward and upward...

Nice post Theo.

I especially agree with your remarks about Sima.   I've been very impressed with him so far.  And he seems to have skills that can be molded into further improvement; good feet, soft hands, decent shot etc.   There's a lot to like about him.   I think overall he'll be a better player than Obekpa.
If Yakwe and Owens can be what they're advertised as, we should have a very formidable front line for the next few seasons.

Not sure if this has been posted yet but I am shocked at how well Sima played when another foul would be have put him on the bench due to foul trouble. He held his ground and kept his arms straight up to avoid fouling but still did enough to alter the shot. There are plenty of seniors that don't know how to play with foul trouble that would either pick up another foul or willingly give up the easy layup to avoid fouling. Sima is going to be special.

He impresses with his simplicity, something most big men really struggle with.  He also does a nice job offensively keeping the ball high and not bringing it down unless he really needs a power dribble to get to position.

For most part the kids who played in Europe at Canarias Academy come with very good fundamentals. That & his Spanish National Team experience has served him well. Kudos to Matt A for bird dogging him.

Yes, awesome. Next time we'll have to chat more. I was in a daze after an awful commute in.

Question for anyone who was at the game and kept an eye on Lavin. How did he appear during the game and evening. Did he interact with fans, did he interact with St Johns people? Did he appear comfortable? Just wondering, thanks.

Talking, checking his phone, smiling & not hugging the SJU Pres. :)

Made the best of it I would say seriously.

Lot of people coming up to chat and take picture with him.  Saw Mase chatting him up for a while.

I kept an eye on him throughout and he was honestly cheering for us. Saw him give a couple of claps for Felix and CJ when they scored.

I also feel he is trying to do to much. If he doesn't work on that , w the emergence of Ron, a healthy Ellison and Felix, he may see his miniutes decrease.

Johnson hasn't been good. Still better then the other options. Not close in my opinion.

And we had five legit Big East players in the house and in the program, but not playing: Lovett, Ellison, Yakwe, Owens, and Ponds!
