Agree that the in game coaching style has been rather laid back for a team with a bunch of freshman making repeated mistakes o. fundamentals.

Laid back works if players respond to it.  13 games in and I'm not sure it's helping yet.

Maybe it's the players.... I'm not sure what it is but new team or now the fundamentals are very weak and not improving much.

I mean idk what are they supposed to do down 15 with a minute left in the game? Mullin chilling on the scoreboard was the least of this teams problems.

Your right that there are bigger issues and many of them but to be fair he sat on the table quite a few times during the game.  If anything it just doesn't represent well.  He's the leader, and a leaders primary job is to inspire and that's what is lacking from the coaches seats during game time.

Pre game, half and post game and practices might be whole other story.

Love the guy but after so many hours of watching this past week..it feels good to vent after seeing the pain points

You know, Houston cougars were a bad free throw shooting team in the 98 -99 season too.

It's early, but the poor fundamentals through 13 games is a bad sign

It was more line the last 5 or 6 minutes and what he should be doing is coaching these young kids to the final buzzer, and conferring with his assistants.

At least he was wearing a tie.

Really worried about Ellison.  Does anyone know if you can find out the plus-minus for him tonight.  I usually don't put much stock in that stat, but in this case it was all him.  And the stat must have been minus 20 to 25 points.  He totally killed the first half and in the second half the trend continued.  At one point he drove when DJ was standing ten feet away with a wide open look from three.  Never saw him. It was plays like that, that killed any comeback possibility. (really need Lovett badly)  Wonder how much the injury layoff has hurt this Freshman.  He's bricking free throws, not even catching any rim.

And as far as free thows go, if you focus on them  too much, and use it as an excuse for losing, then the players start thinking too much about them, and the problem starts to snowball. It appears that this might have happened tonight. NJIT was our worst FT performance and then it was talked about and used as an excuse.  Then we have an even worse night shooting them.  It's in their heads now.  It's getting worse from game to game now.  Just work on them and stop talking about it and using it as an excuse.

Maybe he saw the black and white pinstripe suit Martin had on.  Mullin still wins with the shiny black sneakers.

On a posting not should be mentioned that last game Sima put a white towel over his head on the bench toward end of NJIT game.  Zendon Hamilton saw it within a second or two, pulled it right off his head and patted him on the back with a word or two.  Little stuff like that goes a long way.

This team is a lot like a leaky dike: put your finger in one hole and the water springs out another.  One day it's turnovers, one day it's rebounding, one day it's free throws, one day it's poor shooting from 3, and every day it's the inability to defend the perimeter.  They're young, they're mostly inexperienced, they're all new at playing together, and some of them are just not that good (yet).  Looks as though the magnitude of what they've all gotten themselves into is starting to sink in, and they are staring straight into the abyss of a very rough season.  Came out with much more intensity today, shot well in the first half, and hung around with a team ranked 25th on a neutral court.  Way better effort than the last two games.  Unless you're delusional, that's about all you can ask.  Seems to me that a team that shoots free throws the way we have in the last two games is playing tight, and about the last thing they need is a coach beating on them during the game.  There will be better days this year, and there will be worse days too.  We don't have the talent, experience, or cohesiveness to win regularly yet.  We're going to be wildly inconsistent. Right now, it just is what it is.

Coach sitting on the scorers table doesn't look good.

I thought it was clear tn that Mullin sacrificed the slight possibility of a miracle upset by replacing Ron's minutes with Malik in an effort to get him the invaluable PT that he's missed over the past month. It's obvious that there is an affinity that Mullin has for Malik, repeatedly praising his work ethic and potential. I'm going to give both coach and player a break tn bc it's very difficult to be an injured freshman trying to regain his in game stamina against a seasoned, undefeated opponent. We'll need him throughout the BE season and he absolutely needed the minutes. Nevertheless, the +/- was abysmal and he looked terribly out of sync, yet I admired his will to make strong drives and get into the lane, which is something that has been sorely lacking in his absence.

CJ quietly continues to impress, his improvement is the best surprise of the season. His post game, agility around the perimeter and jumper have really come along. I can't be happier for him, he's going to wind up having a very respectable career by the end of next year, and I know there's only so many people that thought that. Sima and Moose both are admirably doing their best, their time will come. Yakwe is going to be stud, we can all see it.

As a fanbase we have to stay united as we're all getting berated left and right by all of our friends and family members during this holiday season. Much like the darkest Norm years, we only have each other right now! Let's hope we all get the holiday present we've all been waiting for w Marcus, and hope that this team can play with the same pride that they had tn all BE season.

I'm not going to give up on Ellison after the kid has played 5 games. Let's give him a chance to improve. He looked like Cedric Jackson on offense, and Eugene Lawrence on defense. But, he's the only player that can get into the lane. He doesn't finish, but he's got half of it down.

And seriously, did everyone forget DJ Kennedy, Justin Burrell and Paris Horne as freshman?

Rough time to be an SJU fan. I believe in Mullin in the long run but this week has been horrible. It would make me feel a lot better if I thought some of our players had a lot of potential. Other than Mussini, I haven't seen a whole lot. Yakwe has a ton of athleticism at least.

the part that really bothers me is 44% FT shooting and Mussini 0-7 from 3. A few of those 3s were wide open also.

The FT shooting is definitely a concern especially since it's been a persistent problem that now appears like it will never be fixed. I am not worried about Mussini's 0fer tonight from 3 point land though. Everybody has bad shooting games and while he did have a couple wide open 3s, most of them were rushed and from a few feet behind the line. If we had a true point guard that allowed Mussini to play off the ball and could get him good looks his 3 pt % would skyrocket. Right now there is nobody on the team that is a good enough penetrator/passer to get him good looks consistently

Mullin may turn out to be great, but the kool aid has made him into a basketball genius. He seemed that way when he played, but coaching guys who can't hit a free throw is a challenge for anyone, and we have no idea what his skill set is as a coach. Personally, I don't like the idea that we have a kid on the sidelines doing all of the work. What does that leave for Mullin? What part of the coaching is he responsible for?

Much better effort than the previous two games.  Fundamentals were sorely lacking.  Rebounding was awful and the free throw shooting was the quality of a mediocre CYO team.  Patience is needed.  Young, new players everywhere.  For those of you who played hoops, remember how tough it was to adjust to new teammate, his tendencies and favorite spots.  We will suck this year with occasional surprising performances as the kids learn about each other.  Need Lovett badly but, the way things look it may be wise to hold off till next year since this is a lost season.  Im confident that Sima, Mussini and Yakwe will be solid players.  Ali is serviceable and needs more time.  Johnson is a heaver but someone has to score.  Ellison had one of the worst performances I can remember, no timing, missing open men and freethrows, heaving airballs. (always nervous or an)  There are glaring deficiencies that are the hallmark of young teams.  As for Mullin and staff, I do not care if he stands on his head on the sidelines,  He put together a staff with two great recruiters, another hall of famer, and a decent xs and os  guy.  Mullin as a head coach is a work in progress but he obviously has a great basketball mind and it will serve him well.  Patience guys, it will happen but it will take 3 years.

Precisely, Poison.  People forget how raw guys can look as freshmen and sophomores.  Give Ellison time.

As for Mullin's sideline demeanor, are we really killing the guy for this?  So what if he is a laid back guy - there have been plenty, plenty of coaches who are uber-successful and extremely laid back.  Chris & Co. are still feeling there way through this, but I have no doubt they are going to be great.  We are less athletic and younger than pretty much every team we'll play this season.  These kids haven't been playing together for years, as with some of the lesser schools we've faced.  I'm not sure there is much Mullin & Co. can do.
