I understand it was only one win but I am much more confident in everyone. I thought we would get another beat down. Depaul looked bad yesterday but I have seen them play well. Excited for Sunday. Have only gone to few games this year. Not expecting a win. But it could happen. Would be fin to ruin their season.

Mussini really knows how to get out and run off a break. Not with the ball but without it. He will get so many buckets when playing with a real pg or two.

He got a few layups last night against an nonathletic team. Finishing is going to be a problem for him. I have nothing against him and I love that he hasn't pouted since his time has been reduced. I do question how much he can or will contribute on a good team though. Just my assessment.

Ive mentioned it a few times before. You can tell he has been running the wing for a while, gets out wide and takes good angle to the rim once he receives the ball.  Opposed to our other guys who run in line with the ball and leave themselves no angle to get to the rim. Of course it doesnt help that our passing is very limited. I think lately Mussini has gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to getting foul calls too. Ill stick to my prediction that no matter who is on the team, if Mussini gets 20 minutes a night he'll average double figures.

If Ponds is really good, no shot that happens

What, Mussini getting 20 minutes?  No matter how good Lovett and Ponds are, and you're talking to perhaps their biggest fan, Mussini is going to play. Might not start, might not get 30 minutes, but he will play. And if he plays 20 minutes he will average doubled digits. He's not gonna be out there for his defense, he going to be out there to score. Takes 7 shots makes 3 of them, thats 6-7 pts, hits 2-3 ft's and hes at 10.

If Ponds and Lovett are legit, I think Mussini plays as much as his shot dictates. I don't think he gets set minutes. If he is hitting his shots he plays. Team will be better next year and defense will be more of a concern.
[/quote]

So you'd expect that if he gets 20 minutes he would score 10+ points then right? :)

Thats really my point, if hes getting 20 minutes a game he is going to be scoring.

Ok, yes he will have nights where he plays 20 plus minutes and scores 10 plus and he will probably have a few nights where he goes scoreless in 10 minutes

Why we won

We removed the curse of the name change!!

The cheerleaders were in retro cheerleading outfits and one of them got by the "PC police" and had on a "Redmen" outfit--to me their outfits brought back memories of good times--loved the pleated skirts.:)

Any reason for the retro outfits ?
No reason given but not announced either.  One had to look at the Cheerleaders to see they were all dressed differently and then notice the different styles of cheerleading outfits.  You could see today's UA sponsored ones and the see different ways St.John's was presented (along with the one Redmen costume).  Oh How I miss the pleated skirts--wonderful being a dirty old man. :).

Now that we won a game I hope we  get greedy and win 2 more to get to double digit wins. we have a minimum of 5 games left.

I want to play Marquette in Big east. I think we beat them. It would be nice to have some march fun.

Yakwe, Ellison, Mussini and Sima ALL played well. A formula for success when the frosh are playing well. Durand had a good night, Felix, Amar even though he was benched in the second half for #reasons.

Only player who had a real off night was Ron.

Awesome for these guys to get a win. So fun to experience one live again. Let's keep it going Sunday huh?!
Great to get a win! What happened with amar? He hit a three (1 for 3 I think) and had that nice putback, dished a nice pass to sima, then didn't play. He also had a terrible turnover, but we had a bunch of those, so I figured it was injury.

Amar was taken out during the 2nd half shift change when they coughed up the lead in the first minute after the break and he never came back in. Did not seem like an injury.

Right after he drove into traffic, jumped up, spun around in mid air and threw the ball away. Maybe coach is finally holding players accountable for mistakes in hopes to improve them as individuals and improve the team.

It also might be that Sima played well, and Mullin liked the combo of him and Yakwe.

Disagree entirely. I'm sure we'll see plenty of three-guard looks with all three. Can't zone that, so who do you put your SF on? He can back up the one and two and when he's really on, he is not leaving the floor. It looks like the staff has some really nice versatility next year to play big or small and that is a great thing to customize every game plan to find the best mismatches.

The kid can flat out score and is the exact type of player our fans having been wining about not having for decades. He gets spacing, angles, he can create off the bounce for himself and others (even if he's not E. Barkley), draws contact, understands the game,  and can pull up in midrange. We haven't had multiple talented and skilled guards at one time in a while. Jordan was too rushed and lacked skill, Branch was t aggressive enough nor was he a threat to score consisteh, and Harrison was great. Having three guys that can handle, pass, and score...that is  game-changer.

Mussini will score a lot next year. He's meant to play off the ball. Has not gotten that opportunity at all this year.

What are you basing "he can flat out score" on? He is averaging 11 points a game on 35% shooting. I guess since you claimed Johnson was going to be ALL BE you are just comparing him to Johnson because based on that criteria their stats are similar.. I do find it funny that Johnson has been killed on these boards while Mussini has been undeservingly praised despite Johnson having a better season.

I think Mussini can be effective coming off screens and getting open looks. If you are looking for anything other than that you are going to be disappointed.

Took a while for Johnson to get his legs back. He's been a more consistent threat as the season has progressed but fact remains he's not very efficient. I think Mussini is a better talent but you can tell the season is wearing on him. Physically he's just not ready to be playing 30mpg on the ball. Less would be more for Mussini which he'll be able to fit in more comfortably and have another year of training under his belt.

Dave the only thing you can base efficiency on is fg% and ppg. Johnson shooting higher and averaging more.
For the record I think Mussini will be a nice piece of what we do going forward, but def a complimentary one

I think the truth is somewhere in between. On the minus side, Mussini is small and weak and will never be big and strong. He is slow, and will never be fast: when I watch him run up court I'm reminded of a cartoon character who runs off the edge of a cliff and windmills his legs for a while before plummeting to his death. That adds up to: he is never going to be a particularly good defensive player. He does not have particulary good court vision: I am thinking in particular here of one play when he was hit in the side of the face with a pass at half court while running the wing on a break. I have seen no evidence that he can "create off the bounce" - in fact he can barely dribble. He will blow by exactly no one and break zero ankles. He does not seem to have a particuarly high BB IQ, although that might have to do with the fact that everyone around him is speaking a foreign language.

On the other hand, he's a freshman. He looks like he should be able to shoot - although so did Heath Orvis, the player he so far reminds me of most. He is sneaky fast going to the basket. He is sneaky in the passing lane - he has fast hands and anticipates well. He accepts contact and is a good FT shooter. After the beating that he's taken he seems discouraged, but not downtrodden - that is, he has a good attitude and seems eager to improve and seems to understand that he is fortunate to be where he is.

On the whole the sort of 4 year player every program needs. But he's no JJ Reddick and if he's the star in two years that means we're not very good. On the other hand if he's Max Hooper, I can live with that.

As to Johnson, he had 18 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists in 23 minutes in the first SJU win in two months and afterwards the usual haterZ rip him. Those people are seeing what they want rather than watching the game. There's nothing you can do about that.

The funny thing about Mussini is the best way for him to be a productive BE player is for him to take his bumps and try to be a serviceable scoring point. Because of the physical limitations that you mentioned, he will never be a really effective 2 guard. BTW props on the Mussini running style resembling  Wile E Coyote. Spot on!

If he took his bumps, I could see him developing into a smaller type Steve Kerr, Jerry McNamara type point by his senior year. But everyone is clamoring to move him to the 2 which greatly diminishes his ceiling.

You are right in that overall, he has a good attitude. He's made freshman mistakes of every kind, but he's also playing a position that he's not suited for. The thing is, he'd better learn to get suited for it, because he's actually less suited for any other position. I've seen active hands, and overall, I think he's at least as smart as the rest of the team. It's not like anyone on this team has a particularly high basketball IQ.

I'm not comfortable with him running the offense, and clearly, he's not either. If he turns out to be a better version of Max Hooper, that's something we can always use, and something we've really never been able to develop since the 3 point line was added to the game.

In fairness, you never know what a freshman will become. If he works really hard over the summer, maybe his dribble improves, and maybe he hits the gym and plays in organized physical basketball games. This kid was considering becoming a pro. Hopefully, he sees now how far away he is from being a legit pro in any country.

It seems like both of the above posts are considering mussini's pro prospects re-higher ceiling as a point guard. While it's true that for him to play in the NBA, he would have to be a PG, for our team he can make a bigger impact playing the 2, though I would imagine with the team we have next year players won't really be confined to a single position.
