It’s a two-horse race for Torrington (Conn.) big man Jordan Williams.

The 6-foot-10, 245-pound Williams is expected to decide between Maryland and St. John’s within the next week or so, according to Torrington head coach Tony Turina.

“He’s been at St. John’s and he was also at Maryland,” Turina said. “Both visits were great. He’s got a difficult choice. He came away impressed with both schools. I would say they’re both neck-and-neck. He’s narrowed his choices down to those two schools. Within the next week to 10 days, he should be making a commitment one way or the other.”

Williams has opted not visit any other schools, even though UMass and Providence were in the mix. Turina said Arizona, Cal, Siena and Marquette also called to express interest.

Wherever he ends up, Williams could be an impact player within a year or two. Williams averaged 28 points, 15 rebounds, 7 blocks and 3 assists last season, Turina said. He has scored more than 1,000 career points despite missing half of his freshman year, and he is within 250 or so points of the school record set by his uncle, Murray Williams.

“He’s going to be a four,” Turina said. “He’s 6-10, he’s a power man. He finishes better than many big men. He’s got great great hands and he can run the floor well. Once he commits to the weight room in college, I think he can be a much better college player than he his in high school because he’s going to be pushed every day in practice and every game.

“Whenever he played against top schools and top players in Connecticut, he came away dominating the game. His upside is tremendous.”

Now it comes down to one ACC school and one Big East school.

“Both Maryland and St. John’s know they’ve’got a player out there who’s going to be a top player by the time he gets to the latter part of his collegiate career,” Turina said.

I’ve heard Maryland has a very good chance, but the coach says it’s up in the air. If I had to guess, I’d say Maryland, but we’ll find out soon enough.

Things are 50/50 right now with him.
Could go either way.
Lets all keep praying as he would be a real good get for the program.

He's a borderline 4 star player.

On the 1st page of this thread Kob said
"He's a  A10 player right now with potential to be a real good big east 4 year player"

If he wants to come-- good.

But don't be all over Norm if he decides Terps.

I dont mind saving 1+ for spring & 09

The A10 beat the piss out of the Big East last year.
I'd take a team of A10 players right now.

We have south Florida. Is there a subtle difference?
Insulting the A10 after they waxed our entire conference is sour grapes.

Plain and simple.

Alex Schwartz of Northstar Basketball has an interview with Williams.

http://blog.northstarbball.com/2008/10/14/jordan-williams-where-will-he-go.aspx?ref=rss

Jordan Williams '09 of Torrington (CT) is one of the best uncommitted seniors in the nation. Although some reports have indicated that he is down to just a pair of school, St. John's and Maryland, I spoke with the gifted low post player yesterday and he informed me that is not the case. Rather, Williams is still weighing offers from Marquette, Providence, UMass, Xavier, St. John's, and Maryland. Although St. John's and UMD are coming at him the hardest, Jordan claims that he does not have any favorites. The big man, who said that the coaches he has the best relationships with are "probably [St. John's Head Coach] Norm Roberts and [Maryland Head] Coach [Gary] Williams," does not have a dream school, but did mention that "it was North Carolina" when he was younger...

I disagree.  I think he is a huge part of what this program hopes to be in the next 4 years.  The spring signing your talking about would definetly help, but lets be honest.  That high will only last for a year.
" A bird in hand is better than two in the bush ".  Now i'm not saying I would take him over Lance but i am saying is I wouldn't save that scholly for Lance.  Get as Many high calaber players as u can, then cross that bridge (Lance) when u get to it.
The phrase perfect storm refers to the a simultaneous occurrence of events which, taken individually, would be far less powerful than the result of their chance combination. Such occurrences are, by their very nature, rare, and so even a slight change in any one event contributing to a ‘perfect storm’ would be sufficient to lessen the overall power of the final event.

If Malik Stith is a sleeper at the pg spot, we'd be wise to do everything we can to actually lock a good class early.
Norm has gone after the bigger fish before and ignored the talented, but not uber-talented recruits. He has to make up for hos own poor judgement by showing us all that he's learned something by those experiences.
