Ellison is a disaster...can't transfer fast enough. He's a worse defender than Mussini and he doesnt play half as hard. What a waste of offensive skill.

Owens brings it.  That position is all about hustle and effort and the kid just flatout competes. Yakwe and Sima just don't have the hands right now.

The team needs to realize Ponds goes hard after everything and someone needs to get back for him. Moose was the only one getting back all game. Best lineup was Lovett, Ponds, Moose, Ahmed, and Owens.
Agree with everything except mussini love. He runs hard, which is not the same as playing defense. He is a liability when he is on the floor. No coach with a scouting report will allow him to shoot. He can't guard anyone, especially since our 2 best players are so small.

a lot to ask of true frosh to be dynamite on offense and defense.  We are very small, which hurt us a ton tonight.  Our guards crash the boards and we have no one back, hence the huge difference in fast break points.  Cost us the game IMO.  Guards continue to get beaten off the dribble leaving the bigs in no mans land.  That has to change in a hurry.  Overall team is much improved and the style suits the players who the staff brought in.  Nothing wrong with that.

Yawke not having a good start and we need a 3rd scorer, someone who can take the pressure off ponds and lovett.  Lovett right now to much one on one, but being we cant throw the ball down low, he is going to have to do that for us to score consistently.

Can't blame the coaching at all.  Missed some open shots during that run in first half by minny leading to breakouts by minn.  Have to press more to keep teams from setting up on the offensive end.  Give minnesota credit, their best player showed up and they hit free throws.  Can draw up the best plays but players have to execute.  A few times Lovett went under a screen and got burned.  Coaches can only preach that so much, players have to execute.
Really like this team but we def have flaws.   Can't write off any of these guys, long way to go.

It ain't coaching.  Some turd for Minnesota that can barely jump has 10 blocks.  They turned the ball over like 3 times.  Our defense was atrocious.  I actually like defensive zones but somehow the number 1 team in the country yearly (duke) doesn't need them.  Neither does Michigan state.

Our offensive strategy is fine.  We put up 80+ points.  We simply couldn't stop them and we have very little players who can actually play offense up front.  Out guards are excellent.  We need frontcourt bad and defensive ability.

We have to play to win, and I believe there are times we need to implement some zone.  Coach K now plays zone from time to time.  Just because other teams strictly play man that doesn't mean we can consistently play it.  Sometimes, you have to give a team a different look, and I believe we're going to get eaten alive strictly playing man defense all season long.

Offensively, we're gonna be fine.  We're gonna give team's fits on that particular end.  Ponds and LoVett are the truth!  They're probably gonna win 3 or 4 games on their own.  But, we're gonna have to find a way to play much better defense.  It looks the same as it did last season.  We just have more talent, offensively, to offset the madness we see on the defensive end.  But is it gonna be enough to consistently win ball games?  **Rhetorical**

Lovett got about ten straight open layups once staff astutely moved Moose to the left
wing to make help defense choose. Defender stayed within 2-3 ft of Moose every time.

LoVett has quietly been horrible.

Good point, he only scored 30. We need more Mussini.

Why didn't Freudenberg play?

When I posted that he had a 3 minute stretch of like three or four airballs and a couple of turnovers. Continue your hatred for Mussini it is very becoming.

Crazy positive - 80 points with close to no fast break points.
Crazy bad - defense

We need to remember that our 3 big are still only 3 games into their sophomore year.
*wipes ketchup from his eyes* - I guess Heinz sight isn’t 20/20.

Inexperienced team + inexperienced staff + road = loss. Really as simple as that. I think St. John's was the more talented team but they fell into some bad habits, bad rotations, and staff didn't get them out of it.

Love the way the team came out and showed some toughness coming back. Still feel great about future.

I just wanna see some defensive improvement or adjustment.  Frankly, it looked the same as last season, but with better talent (offensively).

+1

A note or two, we don't have any SF like Coffey, but we should have been able to do a better job guarding him.  I knew defense would be our maker in this game, and it was.  We scored 80+ and our guards were scintillating....  Our frontcourt was nonexistent at both ends.  We are very young, but our frontcourt shouldn't have been this bad at both ends.  They just played horrible.  We had some SJU teams in the past with zero height but that isn't the case.  We simply need more from our frontcourt.  Lovett and Ponds are doing more than their share...

I just don't get why we didn't go zone 20+ minutes. At the very least that would have opened up some transition looks and weakside blocked shots. Our bigs didn't step up and fill the lane once it seems. It was like the Roberts era all over again. Frustrating.

Ahmed will be solid when he understands his limitations at this level. I think he looks great inside. Time to shorten up the rotation and go zone. I couldn't be more impressed with Ponds and Owens. Lovett as well.

Agree marillac.  I like zone too.  I just think that is a little bit of Mullin having always played man, both in college and pros.  He's gonna be biased that direction because he feels like his guys should be able to do it.   Truth is though, in college some of that "gimmicky" stuff like zone works...  Sooner or later I think Mullin will scrap pride and play some zone.  It just wasn't today.  Our man d was meh.

Rotations and help are months away from being acceptable.  We won't win 12 games playing man this way. It's pretty clear from tonight that we'll need both starting guards to play 30 mpg.  That should be reason enough to go to a 2-3.   On the bright side, who the hell is going to stop Ponds when he puts on 15 pounds over the next few years? It's going to be a rough next couple of weeks.

Rough couple of weeks, but good couple of years, because the combo or Lovett and Ponds is unstoppable, honestly.  They just need more up front to work with.  Our guys will get better too...

We looked like boys against men out there.  I didn't realize we were so small...or that Minny was so big.  Still, we were able to light it up in the second half.  I know Mullin doesn't do defense...but with 86 points, we should win every game.
