Father Harrington didn't try to find a compromise, he just got rid of the Redmen name and mascot. If Chief Blackjact was retired and Redmen was kept, most students would have been ok with that.

Nothing to do w Harry. Students took the Native American theme too far. This was on them. They don't think it's racist, but racists often don't think they're racist.

Too far was associating the name Redmen with something that it was never intended to be.

Every other corner had a smoke shop with a wooden Indian figure,  using it is a prop
was actually quite normal to use during that time to go along with a term that was used

Normal doesn't equal right, and St.John's made the right call. Credit where it's due. The Redskins could make a name change, but they don't care.

as an ethnic German/Austrian I would be quite honored to support SJU if they were the Valkyires  or Saxons.  Where is my horned helmet?

I think Orangemen are a type of Indian also.

Just did some reading, and Syracuse had a Native American mascot up until 1978 too,  The Saltine Warrior

I remember reading somewhere that the Orangemen are some type of Indian tribe and that is why Syracuse dropped the name.But it was the association w rhe mascot, as you referenced.

The one that really chafed my ass was Buffalo Braves. Imagine calling a Native American brave. That's just wrong.
