Especially Lavin. We achieved nothing in 6 years with Norm Roberts and Lavin made us relevant again. How people can’t at least appreciate him for that is simply wrong.

Jarvis is a great example of how the media can paint a person out to be horrible. If Ron Artest is on vs Ohio State he’s as good of a coach as Lou Carnesecca. But clearly not as warm and inviting a person.
In the beginning of the Lavin tenure, I thought he was the greatest.  number 3 recruiting class, great year 1. But, then I lost faith in him. But have to give him credit, his tenure was he best we had in 20 years. That is not to say Mullin won’t turn things around, but that remains to be seen. Re, Jarvis he alienated a lot of NY HS coaches, which affected recruiting negatively.

Jarvis alienated a lot of local high school coaches, but Norm and Mullin haven’t. Together, Norm and Mullin have landed 2 top 100 city players in 10 recruiting classes. The plan to keep the local talent home is what Lavin didn’t subscribe to. Instead he brought top talent to NYC.

This year the players that play are from Brooklyn, Bronx, California, Kansas City, Kansas City, and Maryland.

Next year the 4 main guys being added are from  Delaware, Philly, New Orleans, and Florida.

So yes, this staff tries to recruit NYC because there are good players here and it's easier to recruit locally. It would be flat out stupid not to recruit the local talent no matter what school you are. But they certainly aren't limiting themselves to just the local area

This is about recruiting top talent out of state. Next year, we are adding zero top 100 recruits from outside of NY, inside of NY, Europe or anywhere. This staff’s recruiting is on par with what Norm Roberts brought here.

Norm's recruiting was better considering he didn't have some huge pedigree coming in and wasn't getting paid more than $2M/year.

The college game is as much about recruiting as it is coaching. Mullin can not do either unfortunately.  Norm stunk at coaching but he was able to identify kids who could succeed, it was proven with a good staff in Lavins first year. If Mullin is going to bring in projects and out casts, he better be able to coach them up,.

Same thing would be proven next year with a change. Their is talent here. We could use a decent PG who could shoot a little and play defense. Just got back from vacation. Watched the last 2 games just now.Never saw so many bricks and air balls. Wojo shocked Mullin with the zone in first game. I was looking forward to that game. What an awful performance.
Losing to seton hall without desi at home. Glad I missed it live and in person .

Unfortunately Tony, we are stuck with another year of our worst coach in history of school.  3 years in, and guy still can’t figure out how to break a zone down, find a big man or a pg or draw up a play in the huddle.

I'm not a Mullin lover or a Mullin hater. I know Mullin has plenty of flaws and he may never overcome some of them. But let's break down what you just said:

"3 years in, and guy still can’t figure out how to break a zone down". Not true. He's 2-0 vs Syracuse beating them both times with inferior talent. Duke attempted to zone us a couple times during that game but we made easy baskets which quickly took them out of it. They've been playing zone all year but weren't confident playing zone against Mullin.

"find a big man or a pg". I agree he has failed at finding a competent big. Probably his biggest failure of the tenure so far. But to say he hasn't found a PG is flat out false. He brought in Lovett who is a true PG. He didn't know he'd tweak his knee in November and sit out the rest of the year. But he also has Ponds, who is a combo that competently played PG in wins over Duke + Villanova and Simon who can play PG also. Then he has Mikey Dixon joining the mix next year who is also a combo G. Can't say he hasn't found a PG.

"or draw up a play in the huddle". You must have watched 0 games this year. The offense has been completely brutal at times, especially during the 11 game losing streak, but the one time they have actually consistently gotten easy baskets was off of sets immediately coming out of timeouts.

So weird that with so much to criticize Mullin for you pointed out things he's actually decent at.

I have watched every minute of every game, either live or on TV so I will break down what you just said and explain what I meant.

1.  Duke plays 90% man and 10% zone.  They have had to go more zone this year because they are just not a good defensive team man to man. Especially on the road, where they give up 76 points a game, which ranks them somewhere around 120th in the country.  In that game we had Clark flashing in the middle where he was hitting the foul line jumper.  I will give credit to staff for putting Clark in the middle and he delivered.  U mentioned the Cuse games, which we played extremely well, however these are just small sample sizes.  In every game this year, outside of Duke, some of our worst draughts have come when the other team has played zone.  Mainly because we only have one guy that can get into the teeth of the zone and because teams do not need to play further out agains us, thus they have the middle bottled up. Against the Hall, we had Ponds in the middle, which should not happen, that should be Clark or BA.  This leads me to my next point about a PG.

2.  Ponds has the ball in his hands too much.  Lovett, Ponds and Dixon are NOT pg's.  They small quick guards who do not make guys around them better.  Each guy is a volume shooter, it is very apparent that Mullin is recruiting the same type of player for his offense.  A offense that is currently ranked 195th in offensive efficiency.  Simon is not a pg either.  He is a forward in a guards body.  Yes, he see's the floor decently, but he has a very high dribble and can not beat his man off the bounce.  A lot of what he does is back in the smaller guard defending him and kick out, or throw up a floater.  In order for this team to be more consistent on offense, both Ponds and Simon have to play off the ball so that simon can play to his strength, which is cutting to the basket.  Ponds has the ability to be a PG, but with the ball in his hands all the time, he will continue to get double and sometimes triple teamed, leading to a forced shot or passing to a guy like Owens who will take a 3 which is crazy.  I agree with Dixon, he should open up more, 1 on one opps for Ponds next year, but again, when you take ponds out and they go Dixon and Simon, the same thing happens, only one guy can get in the lane beating his man.  Teams usually need a few guys, especially vs a zone.

Lastly, Mullin does not call plays in the huddle, that is St Jean's job.  I have seen Mullin on so many occasions sit there with his chin in hand listening to St. Jean.  Mullin is not a HC, he is a face and an advisor.  You say that some of our best plays have come from a TO, which is fine, but how about during the 11 game losing streak, when game after game, towards the end, we look like a deer in headlights when calling a play after a TO.  Take a look back at the Xavier game and even the Nova game, we ran the clock down to 5 seconds, with zero movement and then either did not shoot at all, or Ponds has to heave up a three.  Same thing for the Hall game.  I actually saw ponds take two fade a way threes because the clock is winding down.  Every coach in crunch time, grabs their erase board and commands the huddle, not their assistants, especially a 24 year old.  They draw up the play and they are the ones that make the final call, good or bad.  Mullin does not do that, ever!

Agree with the point you're trying to make but just wanted to point out harkless and Obekpa were both top 70 recruits out of NY.

That’s what u took from my post, accidentally misspelling Mullin?  Ok then

Yeah. For somebody that watches every second of every game you should know how to spell the name of the head coach who happens to be the greatest player in program history. The fact you spelled it wrong FIVE times in one post means it wasn't simply a typo.

As for the actual post, it was more nonsense on many levels.

Duke has played way more than 10% zone this year. Since BC ate them up with the PnR all game in December Duke has been playing a ton of zone. Mullin used the PnR and Ponds beat them off the drive all game. They went to zone a couple times but that didn't go any better for them so they stayed in man. I think if Mullin and staff has no idea how to attack a zone Coach K would know that and played it for 40 minutes.

Sure, 2 Syracuse games isn't a huge sample size but last year it was our 4th most efficient game of the season and it was the 4th most efficient game of anybody to play Syracuse last year, and they played some really good teams. Two years ago, when we had zero Big East caliber players on the team  it was our 3rd most efficient game of the season and 9th most efficient of all of Syracuse's opponents. So to do it two years in a row better than most ACC teams with far inferior talent makes me think it wasn't an accident.

We have gone through a bunch of offensive droughts all season, and that is one of the legitimate complaints you can make about this staff. We've gone through droughts against man + zone. Oftentimes when an offense is playing well in a game the opposing coach will throw a zone out there just for a different look. We've tried that at times and it's not uncommon. One would think that after 29 games this season the book would be out by now that St John's can't beat a zone and that we'd see nothing but zone, but we don't.

The offense is 126th in adjusted offensive efficiency, that's not great but not 195th. Outside of the Jalen Brunson's of the world which don't grow on trees, Lovett was as close to a true PG as there is in college basketball these days. Just because a guy shoots a lot doesn't mean he's not a PG (see: Steph Curry, Trae Young etc.). Last year Lovett's Assist rate was 205th in the country and would have been a ton better if he was passing to guys that could actually make shots instead of Ahmed, Ellison, and Yakwe. He also played off the ball a little to get Ponds some time at PG, because Ponds is a combo.

Mullin not controlling the huddle and the late game execution is a legitimate gripe and is why I think he absolutely needs to bring in an experienced X's and O's guy this offseason. But as I said there have been times the offense has looked completely lost for long stretches, a timeout is called and then we immediately get an easy layup or alley oop. If that's St. Jean doing it then who cares as long as it's working. Look at the possession after the timeout in the Duke game where Owens slipped the screen which opened up a huge lane for Ponds to get the basket for an uncontested layup. That was probably the biggest basket of the season.

forget Top 100 local talent, we haven't even demonstrated an ability to secure a decent amount of locals that are in Top 500.

We're probably passing up decent kids thinking we can do better.....  How's that working out for us ?

There are some blind Mullin zealots on here and we all know who they are. Clearly they don't want to hear the truth and make up all these excuses when the staff keeps going after marginal talent recruits.

No coach who has Mullin's pedigree was brought in here to dig for 2 star scraps who are nowhere near BE level players. It's just more of the same nutwashing that some on here like to do to cover up for the staff's shortcomings.

Deserved or not Mullin will get another season. This team was poorly constructed. They didn’t have a front court on Saturday, but they didn’t have one before the season started either. Everything about this staff is a rookie. Excuse comes from a problem that they created.

That can't be too bad considering the most success Lavin had here was with Norm's players

Lavin matched the success he had here with Norm's players in his fifth season with his own players.

That can't be too bad considering the most success Lavin had here was with Norm's players

Lavin matched the success he had here with Norm's players in his fifth season with his own players.

Agree. Lavin did a great job coaching up the number 3 recruiting class in the country to the same output as Norm’s 2 and 3 star guys

St. Jean is excellent out of a timeout. The offense is terrible outside of that. The 2 guys in the high post vs Syracuse didn’t make sense to me. But it worked. Credit goes to the coaches. The zone offense this year has been shocking bad. Marquette is a horrible defensive team. That zone is new. They just started playing it.

Yeah it's one thing to say that the staff is good out of a timeout. It's an entirely different thing to say the staff is good in-game at making adjustments, running the offense, etc. Being good out of a timeout is a small part of the in-game coaching. There's the entire rest of the game where the staff needs help.

I'm just genuinely curious to all the people who just seem to hate Mullin as a HC. Clearly you understand that he's not getting fired after this year. But it seems like if you were in charge, you would fire him. So whether it's this year or next year, what is the plan after that? What's the realistic (not your fantasy) plan after that?

For example, I think Steve Masiello from Manhattan would be worth a risk but that's not really generating any buzz. Personally, I'd love it if we brought him in as an assistant coach to be an X's and O's guy but also have recruiting in's with some solid relationships with coaches who can produce 3 and 4 *'s.

That to me is where we've failed the most. We've gotten it into our heads that we can compete for the high 4 *'s and 5 *'s when we need to be doing what Jay Wright did at Villanova. His highest recruit his first year was Curtis Sumpter who was ranked 47th followed by Will Sheridan ranked 99th then Kyle Lowry was his first big score but he was from PA. The next top 100 guys he got was two years later with Antonio Pena and Scottie Reynolds ranked 75th and 76th. I won't go any further but you get my point.

Whether it's Mullin, Masiello, Cluess (lol), or whoever else. We need to be patient and we need to focus on 3 and 4 * kids that we can actually develop. This is why I'm sticking with Mullin. I think we're doing okay with that and I'm looking forward to see how he actually develops guys like Dixon, Diakite, Simon, Keita, Ponds more if he stays. It's not good for the program to constantly keep switching coaches every 4-6 years. Mullin has brought in some nice players. Clark has been really solid for us and, I think, has been getting better. Find me an SJU fan that doesn't love Ponds and I'll show you a pretender or, like the kid I almost fought at the SHU game who said Myles Powell as SHU's best pro and was comparable to James effing Harden, doesn't know dick about basketball.

If Simon adds a reliable jump shot, he is going to be lethal. I like what I see from Diakite and Keita and we're still not totally out on Brown. Owens has also been a really nice addition since he's gotten here and he's gotten better. Yakwe is the only player we've had who has really regressed and yes this roster was constructed poorly but a lot of that can be attributed to Lovett.

I really feel like the staff thought Lovett was going to leave and they would have had Ponds, Ellison, and Simon and maybe Mussini (I think he was going pro no matter what). Once Lovett came back, it led to Ellison transferring and then the whole Lovett situation happened and we got screwed. I can't completely put that on the staff.

Also, as for the whole man vs. zone debate. We looked lost against a zone a lot early on in the season but have gotten better. According to Synergy Sports, we rank as average against a Zone defense. However, a team like Seton Hall actually ranks as below average. What killed us the other day was Ahmed's stupid ass getting too many early foul's and having to sit. This forced us to either go with Ponds or Clark in the middle of the zone and only Clark really works on that. Shots just didn't fall against Marquette.

Back to Seton Hall...

The school has come out very aggressive in defending itself and even hired a law firm. This could just be posturing but they don't seem to be shying away from anything.

While some (myself included) might not have liked the way they way they landed the kids in the Whitehead/Delgado recruiting class, it was not illegal or against NCAA Rules. I think SHU as just the only school willing to hire Tiny at the time.

It will be very interesting how accountable the NCAA holds the school if Tiny Morton & Whitehead cuts deals with Andy Miller away from SHU. I am not defending SHU or Willard but unless they can prove a connection between the school and the deals ASM cut, it will be tough to drop the hammer on them,

Yeah they thing will be to see how aggressive the NCAA is with punishing schools and head coaches for the behavior of their assistants. A few assistant were arrested but the head coaches or programs have faced no penalties yet. If schools are going down for that then SHU will be one of them. It doesn't matter when Tiny/Whitehead cut the deals, the fact that Tiny was associated with SHU around that time could be very problematic for them.

That being said, the NCAA is one of the most crooked organizations in the world and I wouldn't be surprised either way how this plays out with programs across the country. The NCAA's number 1 priority is self-preservation and dropping the hammer on their biggest moneymakers will conflict with that priority. Slaps on the wrist in the form of probation + empty words of "change going forward" as the only thing the NCAA will do here is certainly on the table.
