You can't compare being an assistant to being a head coach.  If you did head coaches that were fired would never be able to go back to being assistants.  That is one ofcthe dumbest things ever said.  You're acting like Ollie would have the same responsibility as an assistant as he did running UCONN.  Utterly stupid.

Sean Miller hired Lorenzo Romar, Buzz Williams hired Jerry Wainwright.  I could go on and on.

Are you kidding me? Ollie would be one of the most accomplished assistants in college basketball.  His recruiting ties alone would be tremendous.

But even I know that isn't going to happen.

Get Mike Rice in here and stop the nonsense. Staff needs upgrades.
Had their chance, but don’t see that happening. It will be interesting to see if anything happens unless a staff member decides to leave.

That's a shame about Rice. Something better happen but like you said we shall see.

Never intended to annoy you. And I understand that you posted what you thought was right at the time. I believed this from the beginning.
You always annoy me :)

D
I posted what I heard during the 11 game losing streak. Perhaps things changed right or wrong after the four game roll beating Duke, Nova, etc. We’ll see

Rice not getting hired was more about money. The budget was not there to add someone to staff with Slice's buyout not finalized and being on the hook to pay him a big chunk of cash.

Are All of the assistants are on multi year contracts? I can’t imagine that is norm in college basketball, especially with such underwhelming staff. Did Mullin not know that slice was not a coach?

Not what I heard.  Yes the Slice fiasco hurt financially but they still have some $$$ left and wrt to Rice it would not have cost them an arm and a leg.  In fact Rice is desperate to get back into major college coaching.  And schools are not exactly beating down his door.  He wouldn’t turn down an opportunity like SJU for more money.

The Rutgers stuff is still real and I’m told Chris was simply not sold on hiring him.  Also he was told the negative recruiting against SJU with Rice on staff would be real and relentless.  I am not saying I agree but that sentiment is out there.

Chillious will be the interim coach at UCONN.  Again if we are throwing out names for potential assistant jobs I think Chillious is actually someone with both coaching/teaching and definitely recruiting ties.

If anything they're going to be allowed to weasel back into the Big East, get Danny Hurley, and be better than St. John's from the get go. Uconn almost always gets what it wants.

They got Hurley

Next step get back into a big conference

it's happening

Hurley did well at a "mid major".  URI didn't beat anyone really good during his tenure.  Good luck to him, but if I was a UCONN fan, I wouldn't be overly optimistic.

He was won at every stop, no reason to think it will not continue.

He is a great coach and teacher....

Yeah, but Mullin is a much bigger name. Some people are so concerned about winning games they lose sight of that.

So Yawke is a punching bag over the past two years by many on this board, and now we are supposed to view it is a negative if he signs with UCONN, a team that needs players right now (much like Mullin did year 1) and will be content taking one year commitments from most guys coming from other high major conferences?

If Yawke signs with UCONN and has a great year the staff can take their share of the blame for not maximizing his talent, especially with what he showed year 1.  Until then it is just noise and baseless speculation.

The fact we got nothing out of him last year and high major teams are still interested is certainly a negative. Yakwe doesn’t need to have a great year. He just needs to be in a rotation and contribute. We are scrambling to find someone half as good as him.

Some would say that Yakwe broke out elsewhere only after 3 years of being coached by Chris Mullin. Much like some dip shits refused to give Lavin credit for the success that Hardy, Brownlee, Burrell, Evans, Boothe and Horne had a D1 ball.
