Man I'm over the moon with Heron. I can't even remember the last big guy we had that with his skill and movement. He can do a little bit of everything.

And LJ with the rebounding. I'm a very happy camper right now.
Heron a big guy? LOL You would think Peter Dinklage was a big.

He's 6'5 220 and he played like he's 250...throwing guys around. What would you call that? He has legit guard skills on both ends but can post up and rebound. Keita is three inches taller and can't even wipe his ass without falling.

I was prepared for him to be be disappointing but he was great and more importantly you can tell he's dialed in with Ponds and Figueroa.
A big guard?

First string has the potential to be one of the best starting 5 squads we’ve had in a long time. This takes the no center thing to the next level.

Figueroa looks like he may be one of the few STJ recruits that exceeds expectations. Doesn’t happen often, but I think it will with him. He’s got a great feel for the game.

It will be fun to watch them continue to come together as a team.

Looking at our second string, I fully appreciate the need for cup cakes early in the season.

This could be a special year.

Really fun night in Queens. The team looked and played the part.

In years past we would have let a team like Loyola get hot, bomb threes, and lucky to scrape away a win. This team dominated and played bored in 2nd half.

I'm so excited to see both Mustapha and LJ on the team. These are two guys I've been wish listing for what seems to be a long time.

Cole said it earlier in the thread and nailed it. LJ will be everything you hoped Bashir would have been.

Ponds had very few outlandish shots and thought he checked himself well. He started playing going to the basket as the game went on and thrived. I liked after a bad shot he came away with steal and layup on next possession. Thought that showed some moxy.

I think I hardly noticed Marvin Clark and Justin Simon and that's ok. Both had pedestrian openers but I think that shows how much impact the newcomers had. These guys will obviously be key leaders and will have their nights in the spotlight too.

Mikey Dixon made some plays. I think he gets more comfy a few games in that microwave role. I need to key in on him more defensively but don't recall him getting burnt at all which is an upgrade over Mussini.

Trimble will be better in spot minutes this season. Don't need too much out of him and thought Greg Williams looked capable off the bench. I know Greg well from high school and think he looked a little nervous tonight but with his size he's going to have some meaningful contributions this year.

Keita played well in his limited action. Needs to play more disciplined but thought he had good body language any time he was subbed out. Didn't see any early ego out of him which is good.

Thought coaching staff did a good job tonight. Had the guys ready, played a good rotation, ran some nice sets (we didn't execute on a few but looks were there), and overall looked most comfortable from tip to buzzer I've ever seen them. Mitch was more engaged and interacting with guys, St. Jean was more relaxed (I guess I should wait for a closer game), Matt's suit game was strong, and Mullin was good balance between working refs, consulting staff, and pulling guys over to sideline for some instruction.

Heron really is a difference maker. I think they would have been good this year no matter what but wow watching him really changes the feel of this year dramatically. They could very well do something man it's crazy.

Also I don't know I very much enjoyed those four minutes Roberts got. I hope he can get some rotation minutes. Lot of new guys though. Generally impressed by the majority of them and the ones that I wasn't it's just because they didn't play much tonight.

Matt's suit game was strong

Legit snorted at this. Love Matt. Looks great on the bench always.

Anyone by chance rip the game? Had practice so I missed it would be grateful if someone was able to upload it. Any help is appreciated!

Great first win. Heron and LJ are the basketball equivalent of duck tape and we have ourselves two brand new rolls. They fix most of our issues and plug a bunch of holes. Rebound, defend, pass, bring the ball up, athletic, long, strong, and SCORE.

Ponds looked like Ponds. Dixon is quick as hell with the ball and seems like he has good body control at the rim. Kinda slow release but he can shoot for sure.  20 minutes of energy and looking to score is what we need from him off the bench.

Clark to me is too valuable to have him try to guard around the perimeter like Ponds, Simon, Heron, and LJ can. To me, he should let their center catch the ball 25 feet from the hoop instead of hanging on him and picking up cheap fouls. His offense will be steady all year but I hope he starts to establish himself at the rim early in games.

Simon is the prototypical elite role player. I think it will take him some time to fit in with this group and the abundance of wing scorers but once he does his impact will be tremendous. Rebound, defend, distribute, attack the rim.

Keita gets a redo for me, never got a chance to get going.

Don’t love Trimble but if he can buy in to 15 minutes a night, playing tough defense and taking good shots than he can have a solid role. I want to see Williams get a chance to get comfortable. Think Roberts will be a keeper who might struggle early.

Solid opener but way too early to get carried away playing an inferior squad like Loyola who was picked to finish dead last in their conference. Going to need Keita against teams with real size. He moves better than I thought and is long and rangy. Roberts showed some  energy and had a good block. Although he needs to get stronger. Mikey Dixon showed some nice flashes. All the other main guys lived up to their billing for game 1. Onto Bowling Green...

Key play of the game.  Ponds banked 3 pointer.  Usually the other team gets a couple of those in these early games

Thought the freshman looked really nervous.  I like their athleticism.

Love LJs intensity.

Heron is a player.

Surprised by Keita's agility.  Thought he would be much stiffer.

We fouled way too much.

Overall unselfish play and sharing of the ball was great.

I agree with you on Keita. He looks like he needs to learn how to play defense at the college level.

Thankfully, he has two months to do it.

Trimble lost weight in the summer. I don’t know what kind of a career he’s going to have, but I think it’s a good sign that he’s returned to the program having made changes.

I didn’t really notice him much on defense, but he’ll have to do more than chuck threes to get burn on this team.

Definitely dont want to see him leave, next year he'll be needed much more and to your point and to his credit he seems to be willing to put in the work. With the said, hell probably help us win a few games this year and as an 8th man hes as good of one as I can remember here.

Totally agree with Dave that Greg Williams is "going to have some meaningful contributions this year". Although he only played a few minutes I liked the way he ran the floor and got position (made one layup, missed one). Lots of upside and wouldn't be surprised if he gets some of Trimble's minutes as the season progresses.

Going to have to strongly disagree with both of you. I don't see him contributing anything other than extreme depth. He is raw, but he can be a good four year player.

Fun night in Queens, excited to go back Friday night, hope the upper sections fill out soon but the crowd that was there brought it.

Couple of things besides the obvious, the team defense looks tremendous. You can tell that they are really putting in the work on the defensive side of the ball, Mikey and Shamorie swarm well together, and next wave of LJF and MH anticipate gaps well. Granted it was Loyola, but the on ball presence and help defense was very crisp.

Keita got into early foul trouble but boy can he take a elbow or two to the chest defensively. He's a presence that will bring the physicality that we didn't have last year. He lurks around the paint and gets dirty, I like him.

It's only Game1, but Shamorie/MH might be the best 1-2 punch that we've had since Bootsy/Barkley, yea I said it.

Bryan is going to have big games this year, he's in peak condition and he will get hot soon. MIKErowave as well, we're stacked at guard. Greg will grow over the course of the year.

We are in for a good ride.

I think he's opposite of raw. I think he's very solid all around. Not a crazy amount of upside but will be solid 4 year guy.
