Cragg knows what he is doing. The timeline of how things transpired was not his doing. He will do everything within his constraints to put this program in the right direction. Irrespective of anything else this program has been awful for years so he has A LOT of work do to here. Who the HC is means less that who the staff hired is.

we did, it's Hurley...the news that Mullin was out was leaked (by Mullin's camp most likely) while Cragg was on a plane...threw everything off

I think we have known this for a long time. Cragg can fix that.   

Got played.  I would have more respect for him if he at least reached out to Pitino and made the best possible offer.

One coach had to be bought out...     one school needs to officially give St. John's permission to talk to their currently under contract coach...   so many moving parts...

No way on Pitino.  Louisville was just give a Notice of Inquiry regarding the FBI probe.  More than likely that Pitino will be slammed by NCAA.  The guy I never hear mentioned for open jobs is John Becker at Vermont.  He has 8 straight post season berths at VERMONT.

They literally just started the investigation.  Why would you chose to have your program under the cloud of an NCAA investigation? My guess is that he wouldn't even last a year, before the NCAA dropped the hammer.

I disagree with all of this. He controlled the timeline. He scheduled the meeting(s) with Mullin and he should have been able to anticipate what a vote of no confidence would do. He handed Mullin the loaded gun.

He has access to Hurley’s agent third parties like Coach K and he should have known precisely what it would take to make Hurley move before setting in motion this series of events.

Anyone with half a brain knew ASU would give Hurley an extension and a raise. All of this was foreseeable.

As for the assistants being more important than the HC...that’s just crazy. We could have won the press conference and established ourselves as a force instead of a second rate program that can’t even steal a coach who grew up 30 minutes away from a program that freely admits they can’t hold onto Hurley much longer.

We’ve now accepted our place as a second rate team. Cluess is not a terrible hire, but he’s not a guy you fire a 21-win coach who just made the tournament for — especially when the buyouts for both total 5 million and your coach is the face of the program.

St Jean ran Mullin’s system. Not his own. The plays we know were his (out of bounds) were fantastic. He’s young, hungry and a hard worker. Has NBA connections.

GSJ is going to get a chance somewhere sometime soon and we will be upset we missed out.

The only guy that either coach could be forced to keep is GSJ, and I am not sure he is bad as a third assistant. I am sure Hurley would have Borman with him.

I hated Chris Mullin the coach and typically disagree with a lot of what Marillac the poster says.  I 100% agree with everything you said in this post though.  You do not fire Mullin to go the mid major or assistant coach route.  With all the instability with our program over the last 15 years this hire absolutely has to be a home run.  We can't take risks like hiring an assistant with no head coaching experience or a mid major guy who could possibly not be cut out for the big east.  This hire has to be splashy. It has to be a guy with head coaching chops who's going to be able, from day one, to convince recruits to come play for him.

Is it fair to see how the timeline unfolded as the information comes out as to what transpired before everybody comes to a conclusion that Cragg got played and has dropped the ball? What if he  and Chris were in discussions that would have brought him back under the conditions of staff changes that everyone he wanted and Chris balked? What if Chris wanted an unreasonable extension coming off what everyone here thought was a huge underacheiving season and when told no he quit without telling Cragg while he was in flight home?

Warming to the Cluess hire, which makes great sense: SJ in 2019 hires a guy they could have hired in 2011. Couldn't outcoach Mullin but still, a NY guy with SJ ties, not a dookie and I'd never have to read about Iona basketball again. Win win win.
