Suny Albany fun facts:

- Coached for 40 years by legend Richard "Doc" Sauers who retired with 702 wins up there among the all-time leaders when he left.

- Now coached by local product Will Brown from Miller Place who was a star cager at now defunct Dowling College in Oakdale. He's the longest tenured and most successful America East coach.

- Left Div. 3 for Div. 2 in 1997.  Left Div. 2 for Div. 1 in 1999.  The same season we last won a tournament game.

- Only Ncaa tournament win was against Robert Morris conference rival Mt. Saint Mary. They got it the same year RM smoked us in the Nit laugher.

- Played very well thrice in the #1/16 matchup against UConn, Duke and Florida. Only ever got smoked by defending national champ Virginia. But I guess UMBC enacted conference revenge.

- Aussie Aussie Aussie, oi oi oi.  Owe much of their success to recruits from down under where Brown has had a unique pipeline to for some time now. Typical rosters have 3 of them and this year is no different.  Prolific scorer and deep threat Aussie Cam Healy is their best player.  Plus who could ever forget Aussie Peter Hooley's mother's angel guided 40 ft. game winning desperation 3 propelling the Danes to their most recent tournament bid.

- Their Chris Mullin is Jamar Wilson.

- Would have had an amazing season last year if not for the defection of not one but two all conference 1st team players in Joe Cremo and David Nichols to high majors Nova and Florida State respectively.

- Most famous alums include politician and pioneering gay rights activist Harvey Milk and "Cocoon" actor Steve Guttenburg.

- Once sported the ugliest uniforms in the history of college basketball:

Albany sucks. It can’t beat a team like us at its best. End of scouting report.

Steve Guttenburg went to my HS. I didn’t know he went to Albany.

Great stuff. Thank you for sharing. The Harvey Milk film with Sean Penn is very well done, BTW.

That said, I think we can milk more than just a few points today out of Greg Williams. He’s gotta go strong to the basket. That 10.5 line is surprisingly small IMO. I think Heron’s impact to date has been overstated. They’ll be fine tonight with Williams, Rutherford, Dunn and LJ.

Line is down to 9

It's a classic tale of a two style dichotomy and will be interesting to see which prevails.

Albany never runs. They walk the ball up and run sets every possession.  Of course we'll be pressing and trying to speed up the pace. Should be interesting. The Danes play man to man defense almost exclusively.

There backcourt of Healy and Clark are very strong by AE standards. Can they match up well with a BE backcourt and handle our press?

Aussie bigs Lulka and Hank are lumbering.  So is Lauderdale. I guess he'll play De Sousa and Hansen more.  Expect some breakout dunks from Roberts.

A line of only 8 1/2 - 9 is a scary.

P.S. Keep an eye on the bench for entertaining walkon Nick Fruscio. He never plays and has a huge arsenal of moves.

They are placing a great deal of emphasis on the Heron loss. Thing is, we know that in our two best wins this season, we won despite Heron playing very poorly.

I can’t imagine anyone else playing worse than Heron has this season against the tougher teams.

Hopefully, Greg Williams takes advantage of this opportunity, and Heron gets the time he needs to return at 100%. We do not need to Darryl Hill his return. If Zona blows us out, so be it.

If you see a tall, dark and handsome, very distinguished looking gentlemen ( ok...ok a short, balding, dumpy middle aged man) in an Albany shirt and St. John's hat or vice versa - that'll be me. Say hello.

This is like analyzing a wounded deer approaching a large adult male mountain lion perched on a rock.  It’s a waste of time.

I too have my doubts Albany can handle the defensive pressure well. We'll see.

The johnnies are finally back.  Its been a long week and a half.

Will be interesting to see who starts now that heron is out.  Im hoping the duke gets the nod and we move LJ to the 2.

Perhaps DC should get the start as he'll feel right at home. Albany is VERY white.

Agreed, Cell should start. The contrasting styles should come down to athleticism and conditioning which I would think we have the upper hand on.

This Albany team lost to Manhattan, let's temper expectations on their capabilities.

Albany lost to Manhattan, Manhattan lost to Rhode Island, Rhode Island lost to West Virginia, West Virginia lost to St John's, St John's lost to Vermont, Vermont lost to Rider, Rider lost to Umass, Umass lost to St John's. Therefore St John's should lose to St John's.

Rutherford is not going to be able to play against big east opponents.  Albany was playing 10 feet off of him.  He cant shoot.   You cant have guys like that out there.

Good thing coach mike picked up on that and took him right out.

Champagnie a man amongst boys early. Double figures in the first 7 minutes. Nice body control on the 3 pt play there.
