NIT
« on: March 02, 2020, 11:27:31 AM »
Our NET jumped (10) spots to #64 with yesterday's win. In your opinion with our resume how many more wins will it take to secure a NIT bid?

A split with Butler and Marquette, and win one in the BE tourney with a strong showing in the second game at minimum puts us at 17-16.

Our resume is pretty good in terms of key wins for the NIT right now. With two more, we’d add one more. I think we’d be seeded we’ll because the BE is deeper than ever

I agree, split this week and next week we're in.

Our NET is at #64

It was at #73 last year when we made the NCAA.

NIT is absolutely attainable and should be what every St. John’s fan is rooting for.

We definitely have a shot at the NIT if it plays out as such.

If we could somehow pull of the upset in either of these last two that will keep Anderson's streak alive of no losing seasons.

Jesus Christ. You guys are maniacs. We are 4-12 in conference play and two of those wins came over #10 DePaul which is the only school cursed more than St. John’s.  We are 1-7 on the road. Every other Big East team has won at least four on the road.

Winning one more and then beating a depleted Georgetown team (who may very well be on a six game losing streak) in the 8/9 game doesn’t make this an NIT team.  You really think 6-14 conference records
warrant an NIT?

The NET is a very flawed metric at this point and it is the only thing in our favor. Even DePaul is 81 in the NET and can jump 10 spots with any win like we just did. Georgetown is 5-11 in conference play and still on the top 60 in NET! Purdue is 15-14 ad ranked 34 in the NET. Are they a tournament team if they los their last few games and finish top 45?

Our RPI ranking is 110!!!

You're conveniently leaving out wins over ranked WVU and Arizona. It's about the total body of work, not just conference play. Follow along babe.

Norm Roberts made the NIT with few worthwhile wins to speak of, and a similar overall and conference record. How is this season so different?

It's hard to judge since the number of auto qualifiers can vary a lot for the NIT.  But, in a normal year, I think NIT is possible even if Marquette is the only remaining win.  That would be a 4th Quad-1 win.  Even with a .500 record, that's a bunch of quality wins.  Should be a lock with wins over marquette and georgetown.

ETA: I'm not saying a win over marquette or any remaining wins are likely.

Don’t fully understand how NIT selection works, would they select a team with a story/local following over a small school that may be a hair better?

NCAA took over control of the NIT some years back from the locals so they have said they would not be playing favorites for the locals.

Are you really quoting RPI over NET and Kenpom?

We are in year 2 of the NET and nobody thinks it is even close to acceptable. The NCAA selection committee said itself that they will lean on other metrics and look at total body of work until the NET is worked out. How in the world could a team be 64 in one metric and 110 in a metric that was trusted for years? Something is clearly way off.

Every team in the Big 10 and Big East will be in according to that metric. Purdue at 15-14 could lose out and still be in the NCAA tournament according to the NET. Georgetown is one win from finishing with a higher NET that several NCAA at large teams last year.

This has been a hugely disappointing season unless it somehow ends in an appearance in the tournament championship game. Hell, making the semifinals would erase the season. Beating Gtown and one of Marquette/Butler to finish 6-14  should not even be worthy of the CBI.

Norm was 17-15 overall and 7-13 in conference. He somehow beat Uconn 21 round one and then lost to Marquette by two round two. He still didn’t deserve an NIT bid.

Mike made the NIT last year at 17-15, and 7 BE teams are probably going to make the NCAA tourney, it is by far the best conference in the Country. I def see two BE teams making the NIT for sure. We literally played lights out in Nonconf play and will have played 10 ranked teams in Conference out of 18 games, that’s crazyyyy. NIT is def right in the Johnnies taking.

So you rather our season end after the BE tournament if we don't make the NCAA tourney? Explain that logic.

I think that’s stupid. We aren’t
like Louisville and other teams that can turn down NIT bids. We could use the experience.

But...this season was awful. It was disgraceful. There are dozens of teams behind us in the NET that deserve a chance to play in the NIT over us.

6-14!!! We are are 4-win conference team talking optimistically of finishing 6-14!!!!

*4-12 talking optimistically of finishing 6-12 ....there is only 18 conference games.....Again don’t understand why fans can’t root for that and see NIT in year 1 exactly what 80% of this fan base signed up for with a new coach and a 9th place predicted team
