comparing Boothe's frosh year against Turner's senior year (they don't have stats back to 94 unfortunately) via Statsheet:

If you look at their stats from their freshman years, Turner was obviously a much, much better shooter from the field, 46% vs 30%, and behind the three point line, 48% vs 16%. In less time, Turner scored and rebounded more, while committing both slightly fewer turnovers and assists. Boothe did have a slight edge in steals.

So far, it looks like a landslide for Boothe, however.

94-98. Nice kid. No handle. No defense. No speed. He had crazy shot that went in against St.Francis once in a while, but
against legit point guards, he couldn't keep up, and was eaten alive by Uconn, Nova, Cuse and everyone else.

Mo Brown. Boothe should be compared to Mo Brown. They had different skills, but basically, the same frame.
Brown could shoot once in a while, but he was slow on defense, and never learned to penetrate. He never learned to run an offense.

Boothe got a taste of the Big East last year. He played enough to understand what he had to work on in the off season to come back as a soph prepared. We'll see what he learned.

Brown rode the pine in favor of David Cain, and when he was handed the ball in 93-94, he had no clue what he was doing. Still, he was a top 100 recruit, but unfortunately one that didn't realize his potential.

I thought about including Mo Brown, but it was just unfair to compare him to Boothe, who had one of the worst seasons statistically in the history of the program.

Brown was roughly the same size as Boothe, although as you mentioned he, like Turner, was a top 100 recruit. Boothe didn't have nearly the same level of interest from high-major colleges that those two enjoyed.

While he definitely didn't live up to the NYC hype, Brown is still the second best 3-point shooter in the history of the school at 39.1%.

Mo Brown was a much better player coming into St. John's then Malik...

I think Malik will end up being solid for St,. John's but nothing more...

what other team in the conference would Malik get major minutes for..?

And what kind of player was Mo Brown when he left SJU?
Malik still has a chance to be good. How good, we'll see what he's learned in Nov.

I think you can value a player differently depending on the team he is on. I don't think you have to be an All-American to be a high impact player on a team. If the player has a role and does it well he can be very valuable. The perfect example of role players playing exceptionally well is WVU a few years ago or Drake last year. A guy like Malik is a pass first PG and if he can make the guys around him better than he is highly valuable to us. Geno did an average job of getting teammates involved but he contributed as many negatives as he did positives but Malik could be exactly what this team needs.

C'mon fellas... sometime I wonder if y'all follow city hoops or St. John ball.

'Cause Mo Brown and Malik Boothe aint nuthin alike.

Evrybody know that Mo' Brown was a straight up 2G at Grady. He was a mad scorin machine and could shoot from evrywhere. No disrespct to the brother, but he couldnt transition to PG in the Big East.

Malik Boothe been a straight up PG since he was a biddy. He came from a mo' structured system at CTK.

So to reiterate... Mo neva wuz the PG Malik is. And Malik neva wuz the scorer Mo wuz.

You're right on both points Choz, but you did say last year that Boothe could score, but that he doesn't need to score.
Mo Brown couldn't transition into a pg, or a shooting guard or a big east player of any kind.

Height was his hindrance. And so far, it seems to be a big problem for Boothe too.
Both positions are challenging for guys well under 6 feet tall. So I think the comparison is relevant.

The point I'm making is about adjustments. What has Malik learned this summer?
Unfortunately, Mo Brown never got it.
