Why didn't St. John's recruit?
« on: May 29, 2009, 11:43:09 AM »
Did  St. John's even offer Wally sz___back (sorry can't spell his name) from Long Island and Cold Spring harbor High School a scholarship. He is I think LI's all time leading scorer. He is still playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers. He went to Miami of Ohio, took them to an Elite 8. During the Empire State games I heard he led a Long Island team that schooled the city team that was made up of a bunch of SJU players. I always wondered how he got away? Did he not want to play here? Or did we not recuit him? Thanks.

Wally went to Cold Spring Harbor high school.  a very small school on LI .  I think what hurt him was that he didn't play against any real competition.  He simply dominated , but wasn't particulary challenged.  That would be my guess.  As far as his AAU career,  i have no clue how he performed there.  He was/is  a great shooter.

I think he would have been great for us. Although Cold Spring Harbor is not a powerhouse he got plenty of exposure. Every game he played was covered by Newsday. He is also a big guy. Was he offered a scholarship? He played against similar competion that Zendon and Derek Brown, but he played better.

I dont think Wally would have made the NBA had he come to St Johns. He made the right choice for him

Can't argue with that. I could be mistaken but i think Miami OH is very good academic school as well,  and his father played professionally for many years and guided him well.

Wally was going to make the NBA no matter where he chose to play.  You can't hold back that type of talent.
Even more than Szerbiak, I wish St. John's got Shaheen Holloway or a nasty PG out of the Eric Barkley mold.  That team sorely needed a point.  Tarik Turner was awful.

played better then Zendon, are you smoking crack..? Zendon was a Top 5 recruiting nationally..  TOP 5..!!

Wally might have been great in college but where he did end up speaks volumes about what college coaches thought about his gme coming out of high school. They were all obviously proven wrong but its not like he went to even an Atlatic 10 school.

Miami is an attractive Midwest campus (outside of Cincy) and was actually initially named one of the so-called Public Ivy schools in the 80s. It's also usually the trickiest answer to the trivia question:
Which four schools had a President and a Super Bowl winning quarterback graduate from the school?

My cousin was telling me that Johnny Dawkins told him that there was a shooting drill that he would work on with Bryant in preparation for the Olympics, which involved trying to hit ten shots from five different places around the arc. The highest score ever reported was Szczerbiak's 47. It took Bryant all morning, but he was so competitive that he wouldn't quit until he at least tied Szczerbiak's number.

I heard it was the way Lou utilized Sergio Luyk.  Wally's family were close to Sergio and they did not want Wally to be a 3 point specialist.

I was talking about HS. Wally was in News Day every day. And every day he would score 30/40 points. I have no idea who the better HS player was.  I should have said had more publicity. To be honest I never saw Wally play in HS. I only saw Zendon once. He almost broke the rim at my HS because he dunked so many times.

They all averaged over 30 a game as seniors, so the difference between them wasn't that great.
