Non Conference Schedule Out
« on: July 08, 2009, 04:28:34 PM »
http://redstormsports.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/070809aac.html

Fans will get an early glance at the Carnesecca Initiative Phase II renovations right from the jump - including the Red Storm's new high-resolution video scoreboard - on Friday, Nov. 13 as the Blackbirds of Long Island University head up the BQE for a season-opening matchup in Queens.

The Red Storm will then hit the road, traveling upstate to Rochester, N.Y., to meet St. Bonaventure in a neutral matchup in "The Flower City" at Blue Cross Arena on Tuesday, Nov. 17. The contest will mark the first between the Red Storm and Bonnies since 1985.

St. John's next participates in the third annual Philly Hoop Group Classic, beginning with a home matchup against Brown. The Bears visit Carnesecca Arena on Friday, Nov. 20 before the Red Storm travels to Philadelphia's most storied collegiate venue, the Palestra, on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania. The Red Storm meets a pair of 2009 NCAA participants as part of the new two-day, tripleheader format - St. John's faces Siena in the second game of the tripleheader on Friday, Nov. 27, before facing Temple on Saturday, Nov. 28, in the nightcap.

After heading home to square off with Long Island squad Stony Brook on Wednesday, Dec. 2, the Red Storm will head south to Tobacco Road for its annual meeting with national power Duke. The Saturday, Dec. 5 tilt will mark the 12th-straight season in which the two squads have met.

After facing the Blue Devils, the Red Storm heads back to New York to make its Madison Square Garden season debut, participating in the third-annual SEC/BIG EAST Invitational. St. John's plays host to the Georgia Bulldogs on Wednesday, Dec. 9, at The Garden in a matchup that will be televised nationally on ESPN2. Fellow BIG EAST squad Connecticut will host the Kentucky Wildcats in the game that follows on ESPN as part of the doubleheader event at "The World's Most Famous Arena."

St. John's has faced only eight opponents 80 or more times as it heads into its 103rd season of basketball, and the Red Storm renew one of those rivalries on Sunday, Dec. 13 when cross-town squad Fordham makes its way into Carnesecca Arena. St. John's is 60-20 against the Rams all-time, though the two squads have not met since 2002.

St. John's looks to recapture the Aeropostale Holiday Festival crown in the second-straight pre-Christmas version of the classic event at Madison Square Garden, on Sunday and Monday, Dec. 20-21. The Red Storm meets Hofstra on Dec. 20, following a matchup between 2009 NCAA participant Cornell of the Ivy League and 2009 NIT participant Davidson of the Southern Conference. The Red Storm, which has claimed two of the last five titles, looks to hoist the trophy on Dec. 21.

Rounding out the Red Storm's non-conference schedule is a Wednesday, Dec. 23 tilt against Bryant University. St. John's faces the Bulldogs, who completed their first NCAA Division I season in 2008-09, in the final pre-Christmas meeting at Carnesecca Arena, with BIG EAST Conference play to follow after the holiday.

Yes- looks like a normal ooc sched for a D1 team.

Last year 8  games were vs teams that finished w an RPI below 225 (4 below 295).

Upcoming year-only 4 games vs teams with RPI below 225 and 3
sub 300's (1 is Fordham, and Brown is Philly classic set up-both ok)

Final (March 09) RPI's for 09/10 ooc are

LIU              231
St. Bonaventure  193
Brown           302
Siena             59
Temple           47
Stony Brook   173
Duke               11
Georgia          200
Fordham         317
Hofstra          175
Davidson  67/ Cornell   104
Bryant           327

I like thae additions of St Bonny & Stony Brook (Improving every year)
Looks like Bryant replaces NJIT as the game that SHOULD NOT be on the sched.

The Philly classic has us playing the level of ooc that we should do every year ( Temple, Siena)

I have been waiting to see this game for years. I loved watching Siena back in the Marc Brown days.

So does anyone think the outcry here to play more local teams such as Fordham, Hofstra, Siena, etc. had anything to do with our current scheduling or just mere coincidence?

I think the outcry came during the year as well; fans talked about wanting to play local teams, ducking local teams, and why the hell Bethune-Cookman was on the schedule...

Norm is making sure he keeps his job with his first NIT appearance, because this OCC is too weak to get us into 65.

Last year was much harder. MIA,BC & VT

That Philly classic is a waste of time, but I guess in a recession saves us money

I am happy about the local teams but we have way too many cup cakes.Temple lost their best player,Davidson & Fordham as well.

Playing 1 potential top 60 does not get you in the NCAA & it shouldn't.

With Siena losing it's 2nd best scorer(although they are still a beast 3rd best in the state) , I foresee only the Duke game where we are not the favorite on the betting lines

Best OCC player we face is Kyle Singler or Howard Thompkins? Both NBA bound

11-1 OCC

Improving from 6-12 to 9-9 in the BE

20-10 heading in to the Big East Torny. Win one lose one

21-11 gets us in the NIT & saves Norms job

Attack basketball, pressure defense, 40 minutes of hell ... Early on it might be 30 minutes of hell, then 10 minutes of what the hell are you doing?"

Interesting points. We did have more quality teams last season in addition to teams who shouldn't be D1. Now we have a lot more middle of the road teams. Interesting to see how it plays out. Thoughts?

I like this schedule better.  It seems like they willingly took the losses to the bigger names last year in exchange for the perception they weren't beating up on borderline D-1 teams.  This year they will be facing a number of teams that they really should beat or keep it close with, but could easily lose to.

overall it might be weaker than last year  despite the fact we dropped some bottom dwellers.

BC, Va Tech, and Miami were actually pretty decent teams.
When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

We got Siena who is better than Niagara.  Can't complain too much about that.  What would be the point of playing two MAAC monsters?  You gain nothing from a Niagara win and a loss would be damaging.

Last year... people on this board were not saying these teams were that hard. They were claiming they were the garbage teams of the ACC.
