Self explanatory if you have actually been watching games this year.

This will be Norm's exact excuse for this most recent failing for BE play.

We do. We really missed Burrell tonight against Cornell.

Sean Evans shouldn't have logged as many minutes as he did in the 2nd half. It was blatant how they backed off Evans defensively and had a guy playing "free safety" in the paint clogging the lane. Burrell would have stretched the defense with the threat of being able to hit from the outside. I don't want to hijack this thread with cornell stuff so I'll save that for post game thread.

I don't think anyone is using it as an excuse but it's reality we're a better team with them but we're still a capable team without them.

Exactly dave. Burrell gets a bad rap but he "makes everyone around him better" more than the other bigs. He stretches Ds, freeing up the middle for other guys to drive. He boxes out and helps guys get rebounds.

Mase obviously brings another stud athlete who can actually create. He's also a very good passer and rebounder despite what a few fans with warped minds might lead you to believe.

I am not making excuses. We should still beat cornell.  That said, to take the "next step," this team needs at least one of these guys, and possibly both, to come back and produce.

I love paris horne, but he is who should lose minutes when these guys come back...

Capable is one thing...capable is probably not enough to do well in BE play, considering the abilities of teams in the conference.

Evans and especially Brownlee were out of control and basically clueless all night. Coker was unprepared tonight. As was Norm.

Why are we going 3 for 3 with them? We can't win that battle?

It's not devastating, but we're not going to be able to flip the switch every night. Have to play smarter. Too much chillin out in the first half.

I still think we're capable in the Big East without them too. Who are you so afraid of in the Big East? We can run with anyone.

I personally think that they will be going sub .500 in BE play.  I'm sure they have the players to, "run with" certain teams, but with all things being equal, the team will be out-coached as the only X's and O's the current coach knows about are in his alphabet soup.

Ok put your opinions aside from coaching just on a personnel stand point. Who do you fear in the Big East?

Teams I fear and teams in the BE I think are better than St. John's are two different things.  This includes coaching.  Personnel is not the end all be all.  The coach needs to set plays and put his players in the position to succeed.  So if you'd like me to tell you the teams I think STJ is worse than, including our coaching deficiencies, I can definitely do that.

Better yet, I'll tell you teams I think STJ is better than.

Providence
Rutgers
South Florida
DePaul
Maybe Louisville

Nah.  We need more talent.  And talent with different abilities... maybe a low post game.

I really hope Mase gets to play this season.  And Burrell would have definitely made some shots against this team.

this loss just drove me to the brink of insanity. whether we actually deserved it or not, we had at least another week of the national media respecting us. back to square one now. i dont think burrell changes this game too much, and ive been saying it for a long time now, anyone who thinks we are a better team without mason is absolutely out of their mind. just because he was the only player on pitiful teams who could score he shot a lot and got a bad rap. the best athlete on the team, not a great by any means but a willing defender who can put the ball in the basket. maybe last year i would be singing a different tune but with the addition of brownlee, mason is a MUCH bigger factor for this team than burrell. with mason we easily beat this team and we're 11-1 heading into big east play

Burrell couldn't score against Brown, but he'd score on this 7'1 center?

Why is everyone forgetting how bad he played before his injury?

Not Burrell's scoring.  His post defense plus the ability to hit a long jumper. We'd lose a little on the glass, maybe, but not like anyone was doing the job.  So is guy who is conscientious about boxing out like Burrell is might have helped.

Poison, the guy hadn't played D1 games without a mask in nearly a year. So how he played in the first few games dictates how he'll be all year?

Why do you always jump to conclusions about guys?

I agree kid, we need these guys back. We like to criticize Burrell here sometimes, but last nioghts game showed exactly what what we are missing with him out

We win this game with Mason.

If there is ever a question of if we need that kid, the Cornell game provided the answer.  Both teams return nearly identical rosters and we go from a 10 point relatively easy win with Mase and a group of soph's to a five point loss with juniors, more scoring/depth, and no Mase.

The fact still remains that they should be beating Cornell with or without Mason Jr and Burrell.  I understand that they are missed but St. John's is deep enough to defeat an Ivy League opponent without two players, including one that has not played a game all season on a team that has beaten Temple and Siena, who are pretty good teams.

I mean, you're high on St. John's this season, right?  Seton Hall beat Cornell at Cornell.  Don't you think that St. John's is better than Seton Hall?
