Pregame CBTS and Predictions: Seton Hall
« on: February 16, 2010, 10:18:43 PM »
Seton Hall vs. St. John's is a rivalry that has gotten a little spicier in the recent years, with Bobby Gonzalez' ego demanding a bigger stage when his Pirates are the road team (he wants the game to be played in Madison Square Garden) and with St. John's refusal to acknowledge his complaints. The personalities of the coaches - one quiet and humble, the other demonstrative and brash - come into play, as does the competition over the New York area talent that doesn't go to Villanova, Pittsburgh, or West Virginia.

So basically, this is a game of two mangy dogs scrapping over some bones, looking to mark some territory. So be it. Both teams come off of two wins. Each has beaten Notre Dame - the Hall beat them in Newark, St. John's beat them in Indiana. St. John's enjoyed a home win over the Louisville Cardinals, and Seton Hall hosted the DePaul Blue Demons for a win that should have been easier....

Both the Red Storm and the Pirates want to keep up the winning ways.  Who will win the clash in Carnesecca? Which team will step out of the league basement?

Great job as per usual Peter! That opening paragraph certainly sets an accurate depiction of the stage and I’m hyped! One thing about Seton Hall is even though they have been errant they can be streaky hot. A player like Lawrence or Jackson can get just as hot as Hazell. I think the biggest thing in paying extreme attention to Hazell is not forgetting their assignments on the other players. We got burnt a few times against Notre Dame by collapsing too much leaving guys open from 3.

Who gaurds Hazell? DJ? Mason? Horne? Committee? I like mixing up different guys on Hazell just to keep him off balance and not to let him get too comfy with one player.

I am really excited for this game. The season has been disappointing but I have enjoyed the high points. We win this game which we should and win Saturday which is very possible. We are on the bubble again. I say win a hard fought close game 72- 69.

I do think Seton Hall is gonna come ready to play. I'm more confident in that than I am in us. I do think we're the more talented team though but I question our toughness and focus. I'm hoping the home court and fans will propel us to victory but I can see this game being lopsided against us or very close win.

Make them shoot deep, when they miss make them pay with easy buckets the other way. I think the biggest factor is owning the defensive glass and do not give them more than 1 shot per possession.

Tenacious defense by committee throws different looks and holds CabDriver (Kob’s name, I just love it) to less than 20 points. Nunu forced into submission by Malik II, held to no points but four apple turnovers.

Hardy goes long again, Mason shines on D and has great night cleaning the glass, and DJ and JB lead the offense to a  78-72 win.

Postgame conference has Bobby complaining about….

Anthony Avent 74
Malik Sealy 64

it would be nice to see Horne show up for a game, and play some defense on Hazell, but I'm not holding out for 3 consecutive conference wins with Norm Roberts coaching.

8 years ago, we were 13-13 before hosting Duke at MSG. We would not lose again that season. Norm needs to replicate a similar feat to keep his job. What are the chances? LOL.

I honestly can't predict this game.  This thing is HUGE for both teams tonight, if only because a win puts SJU back in the NIT picture and SHU is looking for postseason play also.

Huge game tonight, and I'm thrilled that its at Carnesecca Arena.  Hopefully itll be a great environment tonight.  Who else is going??

I’m hyped!

Really?  You're hyped.  REALLY?

Hyped for what? We are 3-8 in conference.  We are CBI at best.  The future is so bright I have to wear shades.  I hear if they don't lost by 50, RSHF will take the team out for ice cream and show them his new puppy.

Hey Tha Kid, can you draft a quick order of protection and bring it to the game tonight? This "boi" Mary Lack is starting to worry me.

We are 4/8. We should (are favored to win tonight). We play another average team on Saturday. We win both we are 16/10. 6/10 in conference. Do I guarantee victory in the next 2 games? No. Would I  bet on us? No. Is it even probable? No. But I can't wait for the game tonight. Getting to the Sly Foxx at 5:00.

Defense on Hazell , that would lock him up............1-3 with a Chaser(Kennedy, Horne, or Mason)......who ever can stay with him and challenge shots.....length would be handy.

what we really need to do, and should have been doing all season long, is playing intense man to man defense, but Roberts can't teach it.

I just read on a Seton Hall message board that Seton Hall has a student bus trip organized for tonight, hopefully my fellow students will come out tonight in large quantities for this game and give Gonzo and Hazzell some trouble tonight.  The atmosphere at last years game was awesome, and the Seton Hall game is always one of my favs of the year.

Prediction
St. John's- 80
Seton Hall- 72

The real question is are Hazell's ears bigger than Malik Boothe?
