Kob, there is no bigger a rear of a donkey in NY than a St.John's fan. No one deserves a winner less than them.

this is ur second post in 5 stating that he was the reason we lost. it had nothing to do with the fact that 6 people had more minutes than him and they brought nothing to the table? yet him in only 21 minutes had 9 and 8 and took 7 shots had 3 fouls and 1 turnover. but dj couldnt guard his man got in foul trouble shot 4 for 11 in only 19 minutes. ya missed that huh? or on 1 of justins fouls dj didnt switch because he was complaing to the ref that he got hit in his face. wow u missed that also?!?!
when did i ever say he was the reason he lost the game? i think the reason we lost was we shot 13% from 3 and 37% from the field.

I thought Coker should have logged more minutes too but that isn't a slight to Burrell. Coker had 1 steal and 1 block in 5 minutes of play. Dude does work defensively when he's in. Damn I wish I could coach this team.

this team is completely disfunctional.  it's not about player a or player b.

get a real coach in here...like jarvis...who can use the talent he has and this is a 24 win team.  period.

Jarvis wasn't a real coach. Hand the ball to Hatten and do work. Hand the ball to Hill and do work.

its a shame that its gotten to the point where people are arguing about who is more to blame for our losses.

its also a shame that the team we played in the cbi last year is ranked [#24] and is tied for first place in the a10 this year, while we're still in the basement.

I was just reading all the posts and for someone to ask "am I norm's brother's" because I am backing this team as a fan is ridiculous.  I am frustrated as hell with this program because I was there when we were the talk of the town in the late 90's and early 2000's.  I am also a former athlete at arguably the most consistent sport this school has ever had next to Soccer so I saw what it was like to watch future NBA guys during practice day in and day out.  The difference then and now, all the coaches we had were former head coaches that had experience.  Although they were from smaller schools thats the way the school operates and it worked on the court.  Why should they change what had worked especially when we are not going to pay enough to sway someone from Texas, or Kentucky, or UCLA?

The bottom line is at this point because of the state of the program, unless we shell out major dollars we are not going to get a proven big name coach.  So what, we get a guy from Iona, or Hofstra, Cornell or whatever mid major you want, none of these guys have ever recruited or won at a big east level.  So what we get another assistant from a big name program.  Didnt we do that w/ Norm?  He was the guy that every fan was excited about because of his resume with big name recruits and high profiled schools and was a big name recruiter in NY.  We get another one of these guys that has never had to deal with real head coaching experiences and he does not suceed we are going to be bitching and moaning forever.

This team now, has below average big east talent in major positions.  I want Norm gone as much as the next guy, but unless the school changes its philosophy on Pay we are going to get another guy that we are going to hope can compete on this level.

I respect your opinion, but I think that kind of thinking is just flat out wrong.  I think it's the thinking that Francesca seems to have, and what a lot of people seem to hold.  There is a HUGE difference between an assistant and someone who has run a damned program before.  A huge difference.  Some assistants are good at making the conversion - but most start at an easier level, where they can work out the kinks in their program building ideas. Taking an assistant and putting him in the Big East - at least at this time, let's say the last 10 years - seems to just not work.

St. John's needed someone with experience.

Moreover, the problem with an assistant is that you don't know if he can EXECUTE his plan.  With a man who is already coaching, you can find out what went right, what went wrong, and assume that a strong winning record (let's arbitrarily say .600 winning percentage and higher) translates into some ability to coach or/and recruit or/and train.

Screw a "proven big name coach."  That guy's not coming, and that guy is not available.  People who get wet over Bobby "Midseason Quitter" Knight are just dreaming, and that's what people do in forums.  Dream big.

But knowing what we THINK about financial restrictions, the next coach, if there is one, will be a mid-major guy.  So they haven't won at a Big East level.  They've at least WON.  I like Norm, but he has not hardly ever "won" for the balance of a season.

Why can't a coach from a mid-major win?  What, those teams aren't coached?  Where did the Big East coaches come from?  Some were assistants, but Jay Wright came from Hofstra. Gonzalez, from Manhattan. Pitino (back in the day) started at Boston U. Calhoun, at Northeastern. Cronin, at Murray State. Keno Davis, from Drake. Stan Heath was at Kent State before he was at Arkansas.  Buzz Williams had a year at New Orleans. Mike Brey at Delaware.

So, besides Jamie Dixon and Fred Hill, and the interim Tracy Webster (or we can add Wainwright, who wasn't that great at Richmond before coming over)... all those coaches were "some mid-major guy."  Hadn't recruited or won on the Big East level.  Some of them hired guys with Big East experience to ease the transition, I believe.

By the way, Kevin Willard has been an assistant on the Big East level.

The school needs to find money to pay better coaches, but finding a new coach doesn't take 2 million.  It just does not.  And the current coach is both not doing the job, nor is he inspiring the NYC talent to come to the school.  You need to bring in a new coach, if only to have a guy say "things will be different" and some kids will buy it.

They bought it in Norm's second year, when he got Rob Thomas, Q Calhoun, Derwin Kitchen.  Even if that didn't pan out, those were exciting recruits, sold on the idea of playing time and turning things around.

One more thing, though - there's nothing wrong with supporting the team as a fan.  I just don't think you stand pat on a pile of turds because you don't know if the next seat might have a turd as well.

The problem with the coaches is a problem of evaluation.  I don't know if they will evaluate the coaching candidates any better, now that the stink of Jarvis' laziness and lack of player control (along with the iffy coaching) is gone. Obviously, Norm was hired because St. John's was his dream job, he was known as a hard worker... but that's just part of the job.  If they're stuck on "dream job", we'll be watching Coach Pecora. If they're smarter than that, we'll probably be watching a pretty decent coach.

I agree with your statement.  All coaches have to start somewhere and hiring Norm seemed like the right thing.  There are alot of rumors that high profiled guys wanted the job 6 years ago but there were politics in getting Norm, however we will never know.

My point is that if we do bring in a guy from a mid major conference, we need to accept that he is going to say the right things and that it is a change that is what we all want. So we are going to have to live with him winning or losing.  I am just hoping that the next guy wins, because that is what we all want in the end.
